Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NHL hit a $4.9 billion payday, locking in a 12-year deal with Rogers Communications to be the exclusive television rights holder in Canada starting in 2014-15. With TSN on the outside, the deal marks the largest media rights deal in League history, running from the 2014-15 season through 2025-26. Rogers also announced that it has selected CBC and TVA for separate sub-licensing deals for English-language broadcasts of Hockey Night in Canada and all national French-language multimedia rights, respectively. The agreement is subject to approval by the NHL’s Board of Governors at its meeting on Dec. 9-10.

On the Air

Sunday’s edition of America’s Game of the Week on FOX, pitting the Cowboys and Giants, generated a 16.4/28 with 27.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen, for a 9% rise in rating and a 12% spike in audience over last year’s Week 12 national game. That score marks the first time in NFL on FOX history that the first six national game broadcasts have averaged at least a 15.0. Through six telecasts, the telecast is averaging a 15.9/29 with 27.1 million viewers, up 8% and 10% respectively.

Around the dial on NBC, official live plus same day national data released by Nielsen shows that Sunday Night Football averaged 26.5 million viewers. Coupled with last week’s 26.9 million viewers for Kansas City-Denver, NBC’s back-to-back SNF contests scored that first consecutive primetime games in 20 seasons to post at least 26.5 million average viewers (not including NFL Kickoff games).

On Saturday, ABC’s Saturday Night Football Presented by Windows telecast that saw Oklahoma State end Baylor’s undefeated season, averaged 6,616,000 viewers and a 4.0 household rating, according to Nielsen. Through week 13 of the season, ABC is averaging 4,693,000 viewers for a 5% markup over the same point a year ago.

CBS Sports will pay tribute to the late Pat Summerall during its Thanksgiving game coverage this year, using his voice for broadcast’s opening tease for the Raiders/Cowboys game. Coverage begins at 4:30p.

Univision Deportes will offer 28 exclusive, Spanish-language broadcasts of its MLS regular season game slate in 2014 on Sundays on UniMas or Univision Deportes Network. The action begins on March 9 when Chivas USA hosts the Chicago Fire.

Tennis Channel is celebrating the holiday season with a two-week rebroadcast of the 2013 French Open. Programming launches at noon on Sunday, Dec. 1, with Roland Garros Redux: Paris for the Holidays offering daily matches followed by evening wrap-up and interview show French Open Tonight. Overall, the programming will include 175 hours of French Open-related coverage, including the epic, five-set men’s semifinal match between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

ESPN Deportes Radio reached a sub-license agreement with FOX to broadcast the UEFA Champions League. Coverage kicked off yesterday with two live double headers: Zenit vs. Atletico and Ajax vs. Barcelona. Programming will include all stages, semifinals and the final.  Jorge Ramos and Hernan Pereyra will be among the on-air talent calling the games and hosting pre- and post-shows for each match.

Speaking of soccer, Sunday’s Tigres vs. Club America playoff game on Univision Deportes Network delivered an average of 842,000 total viewers and 478,000 in the Adult 18-49 demo. The match now ranks as the most-viewed LMX match this season on UDN and the 2nd most-viewed telecast ever on UDN.

HBO Sports is set to launch a new documentary film series dubbed State of Play, with executive producers Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey on Dec. 4 at 9p. The series will look to take on “complex and multi-layered themes in sports, exploring their relationship to larger society.” Each episode will spotlight a topic or person who made an enormous impact on the sports world. The first episode examines the obsession a growing number of parents have with the scholastic athletic competition of their children.

BTN carries three Big Ten football matchups on Saturday to wrap up the 2013 regular season. The action begins at 11a with the BTN Football Pregame Show, presented by Auto-Owners Insurance. At noon, the channel offers Minnesota/Michigan State, followed by Northwestern/Illinois and Purdue/Indiana both at 3:30p.

Samsung announced two more players taking part in its Galaxy 11 campaign: Stephan El Shaarawy, striker for A.C. Milan and the Italian national team and Wu Lei, midfielder for Shanghai Dongya F.C. and the Chinese national team. Their additions bring the number of international football players on the Galaxy 11 team to five as part of its global, multi-platform marketing campaign that will run across Samsung Galaxy devices, online platforms and social media channels as new chapters of the story are revealed in the coming months.

Heineken is making noise in the space with its newest campaign, #Sharethesofa. The promotion gives fans the opportunity to #ShareTheSofa with legendary footballers, every matchweek, throughout the entire UEFA Champions League season. The campaign will see a “legendary footballer” will take over the @Heineken Twitter feed, answering questions on a specific match, their career and football in general. Prizes will include signed footballs and PlayStation Vita consoles.

The Detroit Pistons and FOX Sports Detroit tapped the services of Grammy-nominated multi-platinum recording artist Big Sean for a new Pistons TV campaign this season. The campaign is set against the soundtrack of Big Sean’s track So Much More, and is rooted in the idea that Detroit and the Pistons “share the common values of perseverance, pride, and courage.” The commercial also features local youth from the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan.

The EA Sports Maui Invitational announced that 5-hour ENERGY renewed its sponsorship of the event to serve as the Tournament’s Official Energy Product.

Digital & Technology

ESPN reports that ESPN Digital Media generated 8.2 billion minutes of usage last month, marking the largest amount of time ever spent on a sports category property in one month — across computers, smartphones and tablets, according to comScore Multi-Platform data. The company also reached 67.7 million unique visitors, the second highest ever behind ESPN’s record setting total for September.
