News Corp. yesterday announced it has purchased a 49% equity stake in the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network. The channel’s current owners, Yankee’s Global Enterprises, Goldman Sachs and its other investors will reduce their ownership share. In three years, News Corp. may acquire an additional stake for up to 80% while Yankee Global Enterprises would still hold a minority stake. Reports indicate the deal is valued at $1.5 billion or more (YES is valued at close to $3 billion). The investment is expected to close by the end of 2012. Tracy Dolgin, President/CEO of YES Network released this statement in part following the announcement:
- “We at YES, along with the New York Yankees and our financial partners Goldman Sachs, NJ Holdings and Providence Equity, had an incredible opportunity to build a network that quickly became – and remains — the number one regional sports network in the country, based on any metric. We were able to accomplish this because we have the greatest sports brand in the world, the New York Yankees, other important programming such as the rejuvenated Brooklyn Nets, the unwavering support of our board and, last but not least, an incredibly talented and dedicated group of employees. FOX wrote the book on regional sports networks, and we are excited to partner with FOX and take advantage of this opportunity to build upon our leadership position. We are particularly thrilled for our valued employees, who will continue with the YES Network and will benefit from the multitude of resources and opportunities that FOX brings to the table. We look forward to having FOX join our winning team.”
After two seasons on air, Starz has decided to cancel its drama series Boss starring Kelsey Grammer and produced by Lionsgate TV. The network had originally committed to two seasons of the drama about a corrupt Chicago mayor. In time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Destination America, the television network that celebrates the people, places and stories of our country, released a study conducted by Nielsenthat focuses on the behaviors of people during this week’s holiday. Here are a few nuggets from the study:
- 23% of people surveyed said they would like to share Thanksgiving dinner with Big Bird and another 23% selected Tim Tebow.
- Approximately one-third of A25-54 (35%) say the Thanksgiving holiday is stress-free for them while 29% claim the most stressful part of the day is the food preparation. More men 25-54 than women said the holiday was stress free for them (40% M vs. 30% W).
- Men 25-54 are more likely than women to look forward to Thanksgiving Day football games (64% M vs. 31% W) though more women look forward to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (43% W vs. 20% M).
- Men and women can agree on one thing about Thanksgiving: family comes first. When asked about their “ideal” Thanksgiving, most Americans say it is “having all of your loved ones under one roof.”
- When it comes to food, the side dish stuffing is the top choice as to which Thanksgiving recipe is handed down from generation to generation. More than half of A25-54 (56%) say their stuffing recipe was handed down from previous generations.
- Pumpkin pie was selected by 44% of Americans as their favorite holiday pie with 21% choosing apple, 13% selecting pecan pie and 12% liking sweet potato pie.
- When it comes to taking advantage of Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals, more than one-third of Americans (36%) say they do not holiday shop on either day.
