During a recent interview on CNBC, Sam Zell declared his intention to step down from his position as Chairman of the Tribune Company following its emergence from Chapter 11 status. Zell joined the media company in 2007 when he created a leveraged buyout valued at $8 billion of which Zell contributed around 4%. “I think when we’re done with the bankruptcy process, I will turn it over to whoever the creditors decide they want to run it, and wish them a lot of good luck, and they should enjoy being in the media industry more than I do,” said Zell. Reports suggest some of Tribune’s top creditors have been working behind the scenes to find a new leader for the company following the bankruptcy. Some of the candidates allegedly on the short list include former News Corp. executive Peter Chernin and former Walt Disney Co. chief executive Michael Eisner.
