Good morning! It’s Wednesday, November 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With the NBA season potentially lost due to recent negotiation breakdowns, MLB wasn’t about to risk a similar fate. ESPN is reporting that baseball negotiators are on the cusp of closing a new labor deal that “will dramatically alter the landscape of the sport,” according to the story. The agreement would open up realignment with two 15-team leagues, as well as add a second wild-card team for each league in the playoffs. In addition, the story said that interleague play would be held throughout the season with the draft and free agency affected as well. Some changes in the new agreement would take effect immediately, while others will have to wait until 2012 with the deal potentially concluded by the end of the week.
On the Air
Monday Night Football, featuring a Packers blowout over the Vikings, generated an 8.7 rating for ESPN, with nearly 10 million households and over 14 million viewers according to Nielsen overnights. ESPN topped the night among all networks in key male and adult demos; and finished second in households and viewers. So far this season, MNF is averaging an 8.4 rating.
UFC parent Zuffa LLC has filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. in an attempt to strike down the state’s 1997 law that bans MMA competition. The lawsuit states that the law violates the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, the 14th Amendment as well as the commerce clause.
Sports Illustrated is getting back into the TV game, agreeing to a deal with sister company HBO to offer a new five-part documentary series dubbed Sport in America: Our Defining Stories. The series is slated to hit HBO in 2013 and will look at the country’s national character through the world of sports. The series will be supplemented by features in the magazine and social media features on SI‘s and HBO’s websites.
Not that anyone should be shocked, but the NBA has scratched another two weeks of games off its Christmas list due to the lockout, with multiple reports stating that games are now cancelled through Dec. 15.
Toronto is mulling a bid to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, according to The Globe and Mail. After pinning down a bid to the Pan-Am Games bid, organizer Bob Richardson told the paper that he was set to pitch to the IOC in three years for hosting honors. If the bid moved ahead, it would mark the city’s third attempt at landing the Games.
HDNet pinned down rights to European MMA promotion BAMMA, with a multi-year deal that will kick off in December with live coverage of BAMMA 8 from Nottingham, England.
After a season as a football independent, BYU is reportedly on the verge of joining the Big East as a football-only member, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. The report stated that an announcement could be made as soon as this week that the school will join the likes of Boise State, SMU, Houston and, potentially Air Force to form a new western arm of the conference.
BTN made its picks for the last regular season football of the season, slating three games on Saturday, Nov. 26, beginning with Michigan State/Northwestern at noon, followed by Illinois/Minnesota and Purdue/Indiana at 3:30p.
High school sports channel MSG Varsity struck a multi-year agreement with the New York City Department of Education that makes MSG Varsity the Official Sports Network of the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL). Through the deal, MSG Varsity will now have the right to showcase any of the PSAL’s regular season and playoff games, including full-game broadcasts, highlights, interviews with student-athletes and coaches, news and more. This month, MSG Varsity will schedule coverage of seven matchups.
The World Maccabiah Games, called the second largest competition in the world, reached a deal that will give television rights to Jewish Life Television (JLTV). The games will take place in Israel on July 16-30, 2013. JLTV will offer live coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies as well as daily event highlights.
The NFL is launching a new branded platform, launching an official monthly publication NFL Magazine. The first issue will hit newsstands on Dec. 13 with editions accessible for subscription as well as on newsstands. Boomer Esiason and Andrea Kremer have both signed on as regular contributors with Jim Buckley serving as editor. The magazine is designed to offer perspective and insights as well as offer features from fellow league platforms NFL Network and NFL.com.

This year’s initiative will wrap up at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend by presenting Hispanic fans with special ticket offers to the weekend’s races, which will crown the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion. The races will also feature Bienvenidos a NASCAR decals during the races, Spanish language brand ambassadors, virtual bilingual QR code garage tours and Spanish language live race broadcast though scanners.
The Baltimore Orioles will be bringing back the cartoon bird in a blast to the past that will incorporate elements from the 1970 and 1983 versions of the mascot to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The cartoon bird’s image was a pillar of the team until 1989, when the franchise changed the logo to an actual oriole.

The NBA Players Association took threats of disbanding the union to its digital heart, with the union’s website now reading “Error 404: Basketball Not Found Please be patient as we work on resolving this. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” Well said.
