Two more series were picked up by NBC for this fall: White House sitcom pilot 1600 Penn received a series order for 13 episodes starring Bill Pullman as the President of the US and Jenna Elfman as the First Lady and stepmother to the POTUS’ children. 1600 Penn was created and also stars Josh Gad who plays the president’s out-of-control eldest son. NBC also approved the comedy Animal Practice (formerly titled Animal Kingdom) about a curmudgeonly veterinarian who loves animals but usually dislikes their owners. Justin Kirk and Tyler Labine star in Animal Practice.
According to Nielsen’s Advertising & Audiences Report, US television advertising expenditures grew by +4.5% in 2011. The report reveals television continues to dominate ad dollars spent as well as consumers’ media time. The total TV advertising expenditure is $72 billion, more than all other ad platforms combined. Other key findings in Nielsen’s reports shows TV has increased at a steady rate the last several years and is up by +42% since 2007; the average TV commercial in 2001 was 28.4 seconds; Spanish-language cable and network TV saw double digit growth in ad spend, up 24% and 16% respectively from 2010; AT&T and Verizon were the top TV spenders in 2011 for their brands AT&T Wireless Web Access at $1.1 billion and Verizon Wireless Web Access at $702.2 million; and automotive was the largest category for advertising spend in 2011 across all media at $10.2 billion spent by various automotive brands.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences launched a newly redesigned For Your Consideration (FYC) website for Academy members. The site, found at www.emmysfyc.com offers members a private screening location to view submitted materials for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards which airs live September 23 on ABC. On Fridays through June 22, Academy members will receive an email update listing all program submissions that have been posted to the FYC site that week and are available for viewing. By June 11, the Academy will offer a complete ballot listing all potential nominees. Members will receive Scantron voting sheets via mail and those will be due by 5p on June 28 to Ernst & Young for tabulation. The nominations will then be revealed July 19 at 535a (Pacific) and can be seen live that morning via Emmys.com.

Three more stations have cleared What America Thinks with Scott Rasmussen from Telco Productions. KCBS/Los Angeles, WADL/Detroit and KPHO/Phoenix picked up the weekly half-hour program which premieres this fall. These clearances follow pickups by WCBS/New York, KYW/Philadelphia and WFOR/Miami.
Rive Gauche Television acquired several new series that it will represent at the L.A. Screenings. Two new series include Happily Never After (10 x 60) and Sins & Secrets (29 x 60); a pair of travel series Wine Roads (12 x 30) and Travellers With Skies (10 x 30); the new lifestyle series Operation Osmin (23 x 60); and two wildlife series Animal Science (26 x 30) and Wild About Animals (95 x 30).

TNT is moving forward with a new medical drama series from producer David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope) titled Monday Mornings. The series is based on the book by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, M.D., a practicing neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent. The drama’s ensemble cast includes Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Jamie Bamber, Jennifer Finnigan, Bill Irwin, Keong Sim, Sarayu Rao and Emily Swallow. TNT has ordered 10 episodes for the first season and has slated the series to premiere in summer 2013. Monday Mornings, produced by TNT Originals and David E. Kelley Productions, is set at the fictional Chelsea General Hospital in Portland, OR and follows the lives of doctors as they confront personal and professional losses. Kelley and Gupta both serve as executive producers on the series and Bill D’Elia was an EP on the pilot episode as well as the director; Kelley also penned the pilot. In addition, TNT is working with Turner Broadcasting System International, Inc. to produce this global series. Monday Mornings will air on TNT as well as Turner networks worldwide and will be distributed by TBS International outside the US and Canada.
Independent producer and distributor Entertainment Studios, Inc. finalized the cast for its new sitcom, Mr. Box Office debuting this fall. The pilot episode is now complete starring Bill Bellamy, Jon Lovitz, Vivica A. Fox, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Rick Fox, Gary Busey and Tim Meadows. Entertainment Studios ordered 104 episodes of the comedy about a big movie star (Bellamy) who is sentenced to community service teaching English at an inner-city high school in South Central L.A. Production on the full series will begin this summer for its planned fall 2012 launch.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX captured the top spot on Saturday at 1.2/4 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. FOX won at 8p with its UFC on FOX coverage at 1.0/5 and ABC’s repeat of Shark Tank was next at 0.8/3. FOX remained in the lead through 9p with more UFC on FOX at 1.3/5 and CBS stayed put in second place with its Crimetime Saturday encore at 0.8/3. At 10p, CBS won with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.3/4 followed by ABC’s movie and FOX’s UFC tying for #2 at 1.1/4 each.

ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos checked in at #1 during 7p with a 2.0/6 and CBS’ 60 Minutes was second at 1.6/5. In the 8p hour, ABC didn’t budge as Once Upon a Time won at 3.0/8 followed by the season finale of The Amazing Race on CBS at 2.7/7. At 9p, ABC’s Desperate Housewives and CBS’ The Amazing Race finale tied for #1 at 2.7/7 each and FOX’s comedies Family Guy and American Dad came in third at 2.5/7. Jeffrey Reyna was promoted to SVP/Business Affairs, US Distribution at Sony Pictures Television (SPT). Jeffrey will head the US distribution business affairs team in all facets of domestic distribution involving basic cable, subscription pay television, broadcast syndication and over-the-tip subscription and free VOD. Upcoming syndicated first-run daily talk show The Jeff Probst Show hired Marilyn Zielinski and David Goldman as Senior Supervising Producers and Brian Campbell as Director.
