Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

And the winner is… FX.  The cable network has inked a 5-year deal for the TV rights for Spider-Man 3. The domestic box office receipts will determine the license fee, which of course is going to be a mighty big one based on the movie’s first weekend of $140 million plus.  FX’s window would begin in 2009, following the Starz pay TV window. FX also holds the rights to Spider-Man 2 in a deal that is estimated to have run upwards of $50 million.

The Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery live-action movie will be directed by Patricia Rozema, per Variety.  The HBO Films and Picturehouse movie is set for release on July 2, 2008.

MORE KIDS STUFF

At the Cable Show in Vegas yesterday Juniper Content Corporation unveiled plans to provide a second satellite feed for those in Mountain and Pacific Standard time zones for its ¡Sorpresa! Network from June 29.

Entertainment Rights has completed a distribution rights deal for the upcoming 2D animated Transformers series from Hasbro.  Under the deal ER picks up the TV and VOD distribution rights to the new Transformers: Animated and a special based on the property (26×30′; 1×70′), excluding Latin America, North America and some Asian territories.  The series is being executive produced by Sam Register.

Nickelodeon will take a look at the kids who have/had a parent in jail in Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids of Cons, debuting Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 8:30p.  The show will explore the stigma of having an incarcerated parent, as well as the emotional and separation issues.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Home Video will release Re-Animated, Cartoon Network’s first original live-action TV movie, on DVD this August 21, 2007.  Created and written by Adam Pava and Tim McKeon, Cartoon Network will launch a Re-Animated TV series later this summer.  Re-Animated is a Renegade Animation, Appleday Pictures, and Cartoon Network production.

As summer approaches and so does a new line of Baywatch consumer products, you can thank me later for making sure you are properly outfitted for the season.  FremantleMedia will launch its Baywatch merchandising effort with four partners this spring:

  • First up, here’s a shocker, is a women and juniors’ line of swimwear and beach sportswear from INGEAR Swim, the full line will be available by spring 2008.
  • Knot4Nothing – Baywatch themed T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and headwear for men and women.  Additionally, Knot4Nothing’s T-shirts line featuring David Hasselhoff’s likeness will be available exclusively at Sak’s Fifth Avenue from this spring.
  • Mad Engine will introduce a line of young men’s apparel (T-shirts, fleece, thermal tanks) MeadWestvaco bowing fall 2007 the line will include Baywatch wallposter calendars, mini calendars and Day Dreams.

When you’re done at the beach some may want to slip into something a little more super hero like and they’ll be able to do that with the new Supergirl fashion line.  Warner Bros. Consumer Products, for DC Comics, is launching a line of Supergirl S-shield apparel and accessories this week at a benefit event with partner Girls Inc.  Available exclusively at Intuition and shopintuition.com, the line includes products ($23-$1000) from a several partners including: S-shield diamond necklace by D’Annunzio; Junk Food Clothing (tees/tanks/hoodies); FEW (sundresses); Havaianas (limited edition flip-flops); Crocs (ballet flats with Jibbitz, sport bag); Swarovski (jeweled t-shirts); Goorin Bros. (embroidered hats); White Trash Charms (gold charm necklaces).

THQ will release a host of Nickelodeon video game titles in 2007 including the first El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera game.  Other new titles will be based on Nick’s properties including Avatar: The Last Airbender, SpongeBob, Nicktoon and live-action shows including Drake & Josh and Zoey 101.  The games will be released for the usual collection of gaming systems.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Bob McPhee joins Kabillion as EVP/Advertising Sales.  Working out of the NYC office, he will head the company’s national ad effort through a range of ad and marketing strategies across multiple platforms.  A long-time sales executive, McPhee had been Director/Advertising Sales, Tribune Entertainment.  Previously, he toiled in ad sales for several TV outfits and in media roles for a number of ad agencies.
