Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Australian-based Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company are partnering to bring the Dark Crystal sequel, Power of the Dark Crystal, to the big screen in 3D. Brothers Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig (writers/directors Undead, Daybreakers) will direct Power of the Dark Crystal from a screenplay by Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom), which is based on a script by Annette Duffy and David Odell. The remarkable artist Brian Froud will again serve as the conceptual designer for the mixed live-action/puppet/visual and special effects (e.g. motion capture CGI) movie. Ambience Entertainment, the production arm of Omnilab Media, will produce the much-anticipated movie. Omnilab-affiliated Iloura (Where the Wild Things Are, The Pacific, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark) has already begun work on the film’s CGI elements. The executive producer team is comprised of The Jim Henson Company’s Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust, Omnilab Media’s Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street and David Whealy, and Cinemarket Films’ Peter D. Graves (Terminator Salvation). Signing a worldwide distribution deal is next on the checklist for this project. Set hundreds of years after the first movie as the world again falls into darkness, the sequel revolves around the adventures of a girl made of fire who partners with a Gelfling outcast to steal a shard of the Crystal as they work to reignite the dying sun at the core of the planet. The original Dark Crystal movie was released in 1982. How many ways can you say exciting?
Discovery Familia, Discovery Communications’ new Spanish-language network specifically targeting Hispanic moms and their preschoolers, heads into its first official upfront season this spring and plans to launch a major consumer push in 4Q 2010, which will feature a new on-air look, logo and programming as well as a national marketing and ad campaign. With the motto, “It is about my kids, my home and me”, Discovery Familia is broken down into day parts: during the day focusing on educational mom/preschool co-viewing featuring Discovery Kids en Espanol programming that prepares kids for the real world with shows including Milly Molly, Princesas Del Mar, and Mister Maker, and short-form programming; the latter part of the day will be aimed more at moms with non-fiction programming focused on parenting (Dulces Suenos), home (Chef A Domilicilio) and lifestyle (Espacio Vital). Additionally, DiscoveryFamilia.com ( www.discoveryfamilia.com) is currently being revamped and will also invite parents and preschoolers to learn and play together. Discovery Familia recently launched on DishLatino, and is offered within the Hispanic digital tier packages.
