Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Australian-based Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company are partnering to bring the Dark Crystal sequel, Power of the Dark Crystal, to the big screen in 3D.  Brothers Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig (writers/directors  Undead, Daybreakers) will direct Power of the Dark Crystal from a screenplay by Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom), which is based on a script by Annette Duffy and David Odell.  The remarkable artist Brian Froud will again serve as the conceptual designer for the mixed live-action/puppet/visual and special effects (e.g. motion capture CGI) movie.  Ambience Entertainment, the production arm of Omnilab Media, will produce the much-anticipated movie.  Omnilab-affiliated Iloura (Where the Wild Things Are, The Pacific, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark) has already begun work on the film’s CGI elements.  The executive producer team is comprised of The Jim Henson Company’s Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust, Omnilab Media’s Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street and David Whealy, and Cinemarket Films’ Peter D. Graves (Terminator Salvation).  Signing a worldwide distribution deal is next on the checklist for this project.  Set hundreds of years after the first movie as the world again falls into darkness, the sequel revolves around the adventures of a girl made of fire who partners with a Gelfling outcast to steal a shard of the Crystal as they work to reignite the dying sun at the core of the planet.  The original Dark Crystal movie was released in 1982.  How many ways can you say exciting?

Discovery Familia, Discovery Communications’ new Spanish-language network specifically targeting Hispanic moms and their preschoolers, heads into its first official upfront season this spring and plans to launch a major consumer push in 4Q 2010, which will feature a new on-air look, logo and programming as well as a national marketing and ad campaign.  With the motto,  “It is about my kids, my home and me”, Discovery Familia is broken down into day parts: during the day focusing on educational mom/preschool co-viewing featuring Discovery Kids en Espanol programming that prepares kids for the real world with shows including Milly Molly, Princesas Del Mar, and Mister Maker, and short-form programming; the latter part of the day will be aimed more at moms with non-fiction programming focused on parenting (Dulces Suenos), home (Chef A Domilicilio) and lifestyle (Espacio Vital).  Additionally, ( is currently being revamped and will also invite parents and preschoolers to learn and play together.  Discovery Familia recently launched on DishLatino, and is offered within the Hispanic digital tier packages.

Scholastic Media will host the first annual WordGirl Definition Competition ( ), a live in-school vocabulary-centric virtual came show for kids in grades 1-3, on Tuesday, May 11 at 1p, from Scholastic’s headquarters in NYC.  Streaming online to classrooms nationwide, the WordGirl Definition Competition is comprised of three short rounds and 1-minute bonus round and will be hosted WordGirl and Beau Handsome from the PBS Kids Go animated series.  Kids in registered classrooms will be able to play along, in real-time, by submitting answers online during the webcast.  WordGirl is also currently serving as the national Ambassador of Summer Reading in conjunction with the Scholastic Summer Challenge (, a collaboration of Scholastic and Reading is Fundamental RIF) and the National Summer Learning Association.

The UK’s Five channel extends its relationship with Nickelodeon to feature some of Nick’s tween-targeted series during its weekly Shake programming block, per Broadcast Now.  Nickelodeon’s live-action shows iCarly and True Jackson, VP will air in the Sunday morning tween block.  Previously Five aired tween-aimed Disney Channel programming during the block.  Under an earlier deal Five already airs Nickelodeon preschool programming such as Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom.

Marvel Entertainment enters into kid-centric publishing deals with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and expands its partnership with Bendon Publishing.  Both publishing pacts will feature Iron Man 2 titles as well as other Marvel super hero brands in a range of formats for various reading levels.

  • Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will launch Iron Man 2 and Super Hero Squad kid’s book publishing programs, including novels, early readers, storybooks and activity books.  Little, Brown releases six Iron Man 2 titles (
  • ), ahead of the Iron Man 2 movie this Friday, and the first three Super Hero Squad books this spring followed by three more in September.  The Iron Man 2 movie tie-in books include a junior novel that features an 8-page color insert of film stills, early readers, 8×8 storybooks and a reusable sticker book.  Super Hero Squad is an introduction to the Marvel Universe featuring characters such as Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Thor, Fantastic Four and Captain America. These family-friendly titles include readers, 8×8 storybooks and a board book.

  • Bendon Publishing builds on its existing line of Marvel kid’s books with new formats a range of Marvel properties, including Spider Man, Marvel Heroes, Super Hero Squad, Iron Man 2 and the Incredible Hulk.  New formats include activity books, coloring books, pop-up books, workbooks, flash cards, reward stickers, and board books.  The initial line of titles will be available at drug stores, discount stores, department stores, mass, price clubs, super market/grocery, and craft & hobby stores.

Emily the Strange heads back to school this fall with a new collection of stationery products based on the property from publisher Torre in Mexico.  A long-time licensee of Cosmic Debris, creators of Emily the Strange, for stationery in Chile, Torre is granted the right to expand its line into Mexico via a new deal from the brand’s global licensing agency, Gator Group.  Launching later this year, Torre’s new back-to-school products will include a range of notebooks, agendas, notepads and folders.  Gator Group will showcase Emily the Strange at Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas next month.

Just ahead of the World Cup next month, Pattni Imaginations enters into a licensing deal with Manchester United to produce a line of realistic action figures based on United Manchester players.  The year old Pattni new football (aka soccer) action figures will feature moveable head, shoulders, arms, waist, legs, knees and ankles.  The first Manchester United players to get an action figure based on them will be Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia, with other teammates to follow.

Fathead ( ) inks a licensing deal with Hot Wheels for a line of line of wall decals based on toy vehicles, including muscle cars, hotrods, and concept cars in various sizes.  The first Hot Wheels full-size Fatheads include images of MS- T Suzuka, Twin Mill III, and Rodger Dodger.  Bone Shaker and Custom Otto are available exclusively in Fathead Jrs size.

Dark Horse Comics promotes Micha Hershman to VP/Marketing and Anita Nelson becomes VP/Business Affairs.  Hershman, who joined the company last fall as Sr. Director/Marketing, previously toiled as a category director at Borders Group.  A 12-year veteran of Dark Horse, Nelson, who is currently VP/Sales, Marketing, and Licensing, will continue to oversee the sales and licensing divisions as well as her new business opportunities responsibilities.
