CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/04/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, May 4, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Winner by a nose – NBC has retained its rights for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness through 2010.  NBC has had the rights to all three prongs of the Triple Crown since 2001, but in a deal made last year, the Belmont goes to ESPN in 2006. Each of the horse races are negotiated separately with their respective rights owners – the Derby with Churchill Downs; the Preakness with the Maryland Jockey Club and Magna Ent.  ESPN’s deal for the Belmont was made with the New York Racing Assoc.  The Derby runs this weekend; the Preakness on May 21.

ABC has made it official for Grey’s Anatomy, giving the freshman series a 13 ep order for next season.  The show is currently in the midst of airing its original set of 13 eps, and in fact only 9 originals will air this season, four will carry over into next season.

Tonight’s Premiere:
TV Land:  TV Land’s Top Ten: Wacky Neighbors at 10p

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Showtime has ordered a pilot called This American Life (Killer Films), based on the Ira Glass radio series.  Per Variety, the project will focus on a single human interest story, told in a first person singular format, as is the radio series. If picked up, the series could debut in early 2006.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

A bevy of announcements coming out of the Viacom networks combined upfront last evening.  Let’s take them in alphabetical order:
CMT: will launch four new series in 2005, all of which reflect “what CMT stands for: bold, authentic and innovating programming” according to GM Brian Philips:

  • Man vs. Vegas (Sokolobl Ent): Man is a guy who lost three million dollars in Las Vegas and now is looking for a little back.  He heads to Las Vegas with a cool million in his pocket, and on his journey meets with a variety of other tourists. CMT has ordered 8 eps.
  • Trick My Truck (Varuna Films) is just what it sounds – take a regular 18 wheeler owned by a guy who makes his living, driving and living in his truck. And outfit it to make it as luxurious as possible.  8 eps on order.
  • American Soldier (County Line Prods) chronicles the heroism of a small town National Guard brigade as they are called to serve a tour of duty in Iraq.  8 eps.
  • Unsung Stories: a songwriter takes the personal stories of real people and using their own words, writes the songs of their experiences. Each ends with a live performance of the final song to the people who inspired it.  CMT has ordered 6 eps.

Comedy Central: What started out as a parody on Comedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon  Stewart will become part of the network’s lineup this fall as the network revamps its late-night schedule. Comedy Central President Doug Herzog introduced three new shows.

  • The Colbert Report  in which Stewart sidekick Stephen Colbert will take dead aim at arrogant cable talk-show hosts for a likely September debut.
  • Colbert and a series from former Man Show co-host Adam Corolla will compete for the post-Stewart slot, with the other airing at midnight ET. Corolla will lampoon pop culture and news events in an untitled series.
  • Comedy Central also introduced Weekends at the DL, a talker with comedian DL Hughley for Friday through Sunday nights at 11 p.m, starting in July.
  • Chris Rock made a cameo appearance at last night’s event, but only read from a TelePrompTer to plug up a new student intern program he is co-sponsoring which is aimed at drawing more African-American writers into the comedy business. Several colleges have signed on as partners.

LOGO:  MTV Networks also disclosed a couple of more original shows set to debut on Logo, which launches June 30.

  • In its first reality series First Comes Love, the network will take “take ordinary couples and make their wildest dreams come true,” said MTVN Group President Brian Graden.
  • Out and About is a travel series.
  • Graden also said that the channel will kick off with a taped telecast of The 16th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, which will happen on three separate occasions in three different US cities between March 28 and June 11.
  • Logo also previewed documentaries and specials with titles like The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Ruthie and Connie and Lesbian Lives.

–Comedy Central and LOGO items contributed by Andy Grossman for Cynopsis

MTV: The network has announced a first look production agreement with Sean Combs.  Not really new for MTV has Combs has been the exec prod of its series Making the Band 3 and has been working with the net for the past decade or more on various projects.  This deal calls for Combs to develop new series, specials, etc., and perhaps appear in some of them as well.

TV Land/Nick at Nite will collectively launch four new series this year as they continue to build their warehouse of original programming.

  • Hi-Jinks (Banyan Prods) is scheduled to debut on August 2 at 930p on Nick-at-Nite.  A hidden camera series in which adults play good natured pranks on their kids.  Each ep also features a celebrity prankster playing a fun trick on an unsuspecting mark.
  • One Night Only With David Steinberg (Dark Light Pictures) is a 30m conversation between comedian, producer and director David Steinberg with celebrated performers who share anecdotes from their careers in entertainment.  Slated to premiere December 2005.
  • 100 Most… (Gay Rosenthal Prods) is a five-part special that looks at the unexpected milestones in television history, for instance: Sally Field as an airborne sister in The Flying Nun to the singing detectives of the short lived 1990 musical cop show Cop Rock.  December 2005 premiere.
  • TV Land Confidential (Brainstorm Inc.) are the stories behind your favorite TV shows from the people who were there, and the stories you haven’t heard before – from near-miss casting decisions to pilots featuring alternate cast members and storylines, to love on the set and behind the scenes friction.  This 30m series is scheduled to premiere in September.

VH1:

  • BSTV (Ealing Studios) will debut on May 15. Described as “find out just how much “B.S.” they’ll put themselves through for a spot in the limelight.” Each episode invites real people and celebrities to participate in what they believe to be casting calls and pilot tapings for the latest and hottest new reality shows, all of which are, of course, fake.  The idea is to have them audition by doing all kinds of things and believe all sorts of BS just so they can be on television – thus BSTV.  The show will launch on May 15 and for the next five days will air nightly at 10p.  Thereafter, it settles into its weekly Friday at 10p time period.

As you’re TIVO-ing the May sweeps, please note the Britney Spears/Kevin Federline series set to debut on UPN on May 17 has a new title:  Britney and Kevin: Chaotic.  And I suppose with a baby on the way, that title is an understatement.

Hit Me Baby One More Time (Granada America) is the name of a new NBC reality music series which hails from across the pond in the UK, and debuts here on Thursday, June 2 at 9p. Thing battle of the bands for this one.  According to Variety, the show features five top name artists who perform a cover song and one of their own each week. Viewers vote on their favorites. The show will be hosted by the original UK host, Vernon Kay.  NBC has ordered 3 eps, and has an option for more.

A handful of HBO highlights for your June calendar: Entourage debuts its second season on June 5 at 9p; The Comeback premires the same evening at 1030p; Six Feet Under will begin its fifth and final season on June 6 at 9p.

And some June highlights from USA as well:  The 4400 will begin with new episodes on June 12 at 9p;  and Dead Zone will follow at 10p with the start of its fourth season.

A pair of leading cable operators warned Monday that the industry had better respond to public and FCC concerns on indecency issues voluntarily or Congress would step in or lash out at cable on other issues. The debate came at cable’s annual public affairs conference in Washington – the CTPAA show. Insight Communications Vice Chairman/CEO Michael Willner warned that  the issue is a ticking time bomb in areas “more than 25 miles from a coastline.” Willner and Cox Communications EVP Patrick Esser, as well as programmers on the panel, rejected a plan by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to establish a “family-friendly” tier saying that it was impossible to agree on its make-up. They said the industry’s new Control Your TV public service campaign would educate parents on tools to shield kids from indecent programming. Programmers said that parental controls in place on set-top boxes should appease lawmakers, but operators said lawmakers have termed the “a good first step. Esser aid cable needs a huge PR effort to promote the campaign.
At the same panel, programmers and operators wrangled over cable’s role in the broadcast industry’s digital TV conversion problem. “It’s not our issue; it’s a promise [broadcasters] made,” Esser said, noting that the two-thirds of the country who subscribe to cable will have no problems because of upconverters in cable set-top boxes. But Court TV Chairman/CEO Henry Schlieff warned, “If it’s not working, everybody will blame the cable operator because that’s where it comes in.” The only panelist who seemed sympathetic to the broadcasters was George Bodenheimer, a man with feet in both industries as President of ESPN and ABC Sports, who said, “I think any deadline in the near future is going to be very difficult on the American public. It’s hard to get the word out on those types of changes.”   –Andy Grossman for Cynopsis

IAG Research’s Top Ten Most Recalled New Ads and Top Ten Most Liked New Ads for new campaigns airing during the month of March (3/28/05-4/24/05).  The list is ranked by viewers’ ability to recall the new ads (or how much they like them) and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who can recall within 24 hours the brand of an ad they were exposed to during the normal course of viewing TV.  The Likeability Score is the percentage of TV viewers who report to like “a lot” an ad they were exposed to during the normal course of viewing TV (among those recalling the brand of the ad).  For example, with a Likeability Index of 222, the top ranked M&M’s spot has proven twice as liked than the average new commercial during the past four-week period. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1886 – In Chicago’s Haymarket Square, a bomb goes off at a labor rally for an eight-hour workday. Eight anarchists are later put on trial. Despite a remarkable lack of evidence, seven are sentenced to death. Three are executed, one commits suicide in prison, and the other three are eventually pardoned.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  Who are we?  We were created by the folks at SC Johnson.  Who always work in a group, and we work very hard so you don’t have to.  Our exit always reminds me of a roller coaster, fast and like a cork screw.  Who are we?  SCRUBBING BUBBLES – Dow Bathroom Cleaner.  Judging by the hundreds of correct responses that came in here before 10am, safe to say this question comes under the heading of “no duh!” and kudos go to the Entire Planet and Beyond.
