Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 30, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Cartoon Network will premiere its new series Annoying Orange, based on the web sensation of the same name, on Monday, June 11 at 8:30p. Annoying Orange has been viewed 1+ billion times YouTube. The new TV series revolves around Orange and his friends on their various adventures outside the fruit stand  to places like the prehistoric era and colonial times. Joining Orange on his jaunts are popular produce pals from the web series including the level-headed Pear, love interest Passion Fruit, goody goody Apple, the upbeat Marshmallow and Orange’s nemesis, Grapefruit. New to the property is the only human character Nerville (Toby Turner), as the owner of the fruit cart that the gang calls home. Annoying Orange will feature guest voiceovers by Michael Clarke Duncan, Jeffrey Tambor, Tim Curry, Tony Hawk, Malcolm McDowell, Billy Dee Williams, Leah Remini, Tom Kenny, John DiMaggio, Nick Swordson, Danny Trejo and Felicia Day. Developed and produced by The Collective, Dane Boedigheimer (creator of the Annoying Orange web series) co-created the TV series with Tom Sheppard (Pinky and the Brain).

LICENSING

Ubisoft partners with the kid-targeted virtual world Poptropica (www.poptropica.com) to develop a video game featuring the site’s characters and most popular Islands. Set for a holiday 2012 release, the video game will incorporate Poptropica’s narrative storytelling experience and will be available for the Nintendo DS system.

Bulldog Licensing inks a digital licensing deal for Goochicoo, a preschool brand from The Backland Studio, with Miami-based app developer Tropisounds. Under the deal, Tropisounds will develop a Goochicoo iPad and iPhone app that will be part of its popular Wood Puzzle line, which recreates the classic preschool wooden puzzle in a digital format that helps toddlers develop essential logic and motor skills. The new version features a range of puzzles of varying difficulty, all illustrated by Goochicoo’s characters.

Steven Spielberg’s classic movie E.T.: The Extraterrestrial celebrates its 30th anniversary with an exclusive airing on The Hub on June 1 at 9p.

Canada-based Ameba partners with Google TV to launch the Ameba app on the Google TV Internet-connected TV platform. Google TV users can add the Ameba app to their Google TV for free and get instant access to the latest Ameba TV shows and videos  streamed directly to their Google TVs for on-demand viewing. The debut extends Ameba’s reach to 5+ million Internet-connected devices, which include Roku, LGE Smart TV and now, Google TV. Ameba is also available on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and online at www.amebatv.com. In addition, Ameba continues to build its library with a number of new deals with content providers. Ameba has recently added kid’s programs including: WordWorld from WTTW National productions; Bunny Bop created by Cheryl Wagner; The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That; BusyTown Mysteries; Ruffus the Dog from Hunky Dorey Entertainment; A World of Wonders; and Ruby Skye P.I.

Sesame Square, the Nigerian co-production of Sesame Street, returns to Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) with a second new season (26×30), once again featuring Sesame Muppet friends like Kami and Zobi. Sesame Square is co-produced by Nigerian production house Ileke Media and Sesame Workshop. Season two of Sesame Square premieres this month on NTA where it will air Saturdays at 9:30a, and Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:30p. Developed in collaboration with education advisors, including Nigeria’s Ministries of Health and Education, Sesame Square is designed to promote literacy, numeracy, recycling, health and good hygiene habits, and foster kid’s self-esteem, cultural pride, and respect for differences and diversity. Sesame Square will also emphasize Malaria prevention and HIV/AIDS and immunization education. The series is funded in part by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Additionally, local NGOs will distribute 2,700 new outreach kits with engaging health, math, and science learning materials later this year, these materials support the educational messaging in the TV series and promote interactive learning via games and activities.

BBC Worldwide Channels announces that Cat Sandion will serve as the new co-host for CBeebies in South Africa beginning June 2012. Cat will join popular host Sid Sloane on air, offering up ideas and games for kids and parents, and featured in wraparounds for the channel’s programming line up. Cat, an actress and dancer, is one of Britain’s newest kid’s TV hosts and has already become popular with audiences. She has been featured on the kid-aimed TV series Hi 5 UK, which stages tours across the UK teaching kids to learn through singing, dancing and music.

Texas-based Mobile Mum (www.mobilemum.com), a kid-centric subscription-based service ($4.99/month), welcomes The Wiggles to its kid’s digital iPTV channel, under a new partnership with distributor NCircle Entertainment. Mobile Mum’s library already features kid programming such as Dr. Seuss’ The Cat. In the Hat Knows A Lot About That, Pocoyo, Animal Atlas and Mighty Machines available anytime anywhere. Mobile Mum also produces its own original educational games featured interstitially on the channel.
