Cynopsis: Sports
05/02/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Audiences for the 2012 UEFA Champions League continue to swell, with Nielsen reporting that semifinal matchups on FOX platforms drew over a million viewers each on FOX Soccer, FX and FOX Deportes. All four semifinal contests (in English and English/Spanish combined) drew bigger audiences than a year ago, averaging 1.033 million viewers for a 29% spike and up 55% among men 18-34 with 381,000 viewers. Among the highlights, FX beat its own single-match viewing record set the previous week an April 25, with the second semifinal between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich that drew an FX soccer record or 627,000 viewers and more than doubling the second-leg semifinal from 2011 That audience, combined with viewers of the game on FOX Deportes drew 1.236 million.

ESPN is feeling the love as well. The Manchester Derby Showdown set a Premier League U.S. cable TV viewership record, with an average of 1.033 million viewers and an 0.8 rating for the game, according to Nielsen. In addition, the game scored as the most-viewed Premier League telecast on ESPN Deportes, with a 4.0 Hispanic coverage rating, and 273,000 Hispanic viewers.

On the Air

The 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards hunkered down in New York Monday night, and NBC Sports Group walked away at the end of the evening with nine trophies in hand, the most of any sports media company for the second straight year, followed by ESPN (6), Turner (5), FOX (5), CBS (4), HBO (3), MLB Network (2) and PGA.com (1).

Here are a few highlights and quotes:

  • NBC Sports Group’s football coverage scored for the company with Sunday Night Football winning for outstanding live sports series for the fourth year in a row. The company earned Outstanding Playoff Coverage for Wild Card Saturday and Cris Collinsworth, Bob Costas and Michelle Tafoya all won their categories for outstanding sports personality. “It’s always an honor to be recognized by your peers,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman of NBC Sports Group. “Tonight’s results speak to the quality of the work we were able to produce as a team in the very first year of the NBC Sports Group. We want to extend our congratulations to all of tonight’s winners and nominees.”

  • ESPN took home six Sports Emmy Awards, with four for journalism. Investigative series Outside the Lines garnered three Sports Emmys across three categories – Long Feature, Short Feature and Editing. E:60 was tapped for Short Feature. ESPN 3D won its first Sports Emmy for its presentation of the Winter X Games in the Technical Team Remote category, while Sport Science received the Sports Emmy for Graphic Design for the second consecutive year.

  • MLB on FOX won four Emmys which included Joe Buck taking home the Outstanding Play-by-Play trophy. Other wins for MLB on FOX included Outstanding Live Sports Special for the 2011 World Series, Live Event Audio/Sound and Technical Team Remote. FOX’s SPEED also added a fifth Emmy to the mix, winning along with NASCAR the Live Event Turnaround category for its coverage of NASCAR’s 27th All-Star Race. “We are extremely honored to be recognized for the hard work done by our team at NASCAR Media Group and our partners at SPEED,” said Jay Abraham, COO of NASCAR Media Group. “Winning this award for the fourth time in six years reflects that hard work and showcases the highly compelling content of a show like ‘Inside the Headsets’ despite the turnaround time.”

  • Showtime and CBS won the documentary category for A Game of Honor while Showtime also shared a Sports Emmy with MLB Prods. for The Franchise: A Season With the San Francisco Giants for best edited anthology series. CBSSports.com was honored with its first-ever Sports Emmy for the A Game of Honor win.

  • In addition, Inside the NBA on TNT was voted as top weekly studio show while MLB Tonight was named best daily studio show.
  • Turner Sports took home five Sports Emmys on Monday, including Outstanding Studio Show – Weekly for Inside the NBA, and nabbing one for Charles Barkley for top studio analyst. The company also reeled in Outstanding Open Tease, Outstanding New Approaches Sports Event Coverage, and Outstanding Sports Promotional Announcement Institutional.

Jim Haworth has been promoted to Chairman and CEO of the Professional Bull Riders, effective immediately. He previously served as CEO and will continue to oversee the day-to-day duties of the organization, but will now expand his focus to drive the expansion of the sport internationally, as well as capitalize on television and digital media to expand the sport’s fan base.

The Frank McCourt era is officially over for the Dodgers, with the former owner surrendering ownership of the team once the new owners wired the final payment on the $2.15-billion purchase price on Tuesday. Of course, the new ownership group features Magic Johnson, incoming Dodgers President Stan Kasten and the team’s controlling owner Mark Walter.

FOX Sports reports that the company’s RSN’s delivered their highest average local NBA rating in 15 years. The 16 outlets averaged a 2.97 household rating, which is up 9% from the previous season. Locally, the San Antonio Spurs led all teams with an 8.0 local rating on FOX Sports Southwest. The Miami Heat delivered its highest rating in 15 years with a 6.50 on Sun Sports, for a 32% hike. The Clippers drew a 1.75 rating on Prime Ticket, the highest in 15 years and 75% above last season and the Oklahoma City Thunder drew a 6.76 on FOX Sports Oklahoma for an all-time high and 107% better than a year ago.

Conference USA is reportedly locking in the new look for the league and will reportedly add six new schools to the roster, according to CBSSports.com. The names being targeted include Louisiana Tech and Texas-San Antonio of the WAC; Florida International and North Texas of the Sun Belt plus Charlotte and Old Dominion. With the WAC decimated due to the defections, the CAA is now potentially on life support as well, despite the conference’s new deal with NBC Sports. The CAA has already lost Georgia St. and now George Mason, VCU and ODU look to have a foot out the door while James Madison University may be mulling a move to the MAC.

The latest episode of UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter on FX saw another series low on Friday, drawing 929,000 viewers to the show, according to Nielsen. That marks the second time in the series’ history that the reality series dropped below the one million viewer mark.

ESPN is giving the X Games even more international flavor, adding Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil; Munich, Germany and Barcelona, Spain to the lineup of competition beginning in 2013. The trio of cities will join Aspen, Colo.; Los Angeles, Calif. and Tignes, France to host the X Games in an effort to expand globally. ESPN conducted a formal bid process a year ago for the event, and now organizers from the cities will collaborate with ESPN for the next three years for the annual, six-event X Games calendar  four of which will be summer events and two winter.
