The police procedural series Flashpoint ends after its upcoming fifth season.  Flashpoint airs on ION Television in the US and in Canada on CTV.  Production on the final 13 episodes will conclude this June in Toronto.  The series stars Hugh Dillon, Enrico Colantoni, Amy Jo Johnson, David Paetkau, Sergio Di Zio and Olunike Adeliyi and is about an elite police force in Toronto that deals with hostage standoffs and other crisis situations.  Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment produce the series.

TLC ordered a third season of its series Long Island Medium.  The next season will premiere in September 2012 with 16X30m episodes.  Currently in the midst of season two, Long Island Medium is averaging 1.9 million total viewers.  Magilla Entertainment produces the series for TLC.

According to MagnaGlobal, estimated US advertising revenues (excluding political and Olympic-related ad revenue) rose by +1.6% in fourth quarter 2011.  For the full year 2011, US ad revenues counting only core media and still excluding political and Olympics, grew by +3.15 to $171.7 billion.  By category, television ad revenues (including political and Olympics) were down by -2.3% and internet was up by +18.8% in fourth quarter.  With the economy remaining tenuous, MagnaGlobal is predicting the 2012 ad revenues will not meet 2011 levels and are forecast at a +2.2% including TV, internet, radio, newspapers, magazines and out-of-home.  To read more about MagnaGlobal’s US ad revenue forecasts, please visit our website (www.cynopsis.com) and look for the article under Additional Industry News.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HBO is close to finalizing a deal involving an eight-episode drama series True Detective starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing detectives which would be an ongoing anthology series for the premium network.  True Detective, written by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing) is about two detectives whose lives become intertwined while investigating a 17-year old case involving a serial killer in Louisiana.  McConaughey will play Det. Rust Cohle and Harrelson’s character is Det. Martin Hart.  Subsequent seasons of True Detective will use the same premise but involve new characters and a new story.  McConaughey and Harrelson have starred together in two feature films, Edtv and Surfer, Dude though this will be their first TV collaboration.

In other HBO news, the premium cable network axed the drama pilot The Corrections opting to pass on the costly adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s novel.  The plot centered on a Midwestern couple (Chris Cooper and Dianne Weist) and their adult children (Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal) and explored the family’s dynamic in a story told from the mid-20th century to the year 2000.  Noah Baumbach and Scott Rudin are the producers on the project.

Production has begun on a sixth edition of Rehab with Dr. Drew on VH1.  Instead of helping celebrities, the new season will focus attention on alcohol and drug addiction among young adults.  Rehab with Dr. Drew debuts with eight one-hour episodes this September.   Irwin Entertainment is behind Rehab with Dr. Drew as well as Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

The stars of CBS’ sitcom Two and a Half Men, Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones have signed new one-year deals to continue on the sitcom for its tenth season returning in the fall.  The new contracts give all the stars modest raises.  Despite these new deals involving the show’s stars, CBS has yet to officially renew the comedy.

George Eads will continue playing Nick Stokes on CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for the drama’s 13th season, reports THR.  Eads recently inked a one-year deal to remain with the show that is produced by CBS Television Studios.

Soap star Bree Williamson is heading to Syfy’s series Haven as a series regular for the upcoming third season.  Williamson played Jessica Buchanan on ABC’s One Life to Live for nine years.  Syfy debuts season three of Haven later this year.
