CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

05/26/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 26, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

MTV Networks will launch LOGO on February 17, 2005.  LOGO is a new cable TV network targeting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender audience.  It is aiming primarily for the 25-49 year old gay and lesbian crowd with an advertiser-supported combination of original and acquired programming.  The network will be broadcast in LA, Boston, Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco through several cable operators such as Time Warner Cable, RCN and others to be named soon.  It will also offer a subscriber-based VOD service with almost 70 percent movies in addition to the digital basic channel.

Wondering what happened to Monday nights edition of The Restaurant on NBC?  It got pulled in favor of a repeat of Law & Order: SVU.  The Restaurant will move to Saturday night for the rest of its limited run.  Episodes #4 and #5 are scheduled to air this Saturday at 8p and 9p.

Tonight’s Season Finales:
My Wife and Kids on ABC at 8 pm (Part 1) and 8:30 pm (Part 2)
Star Trek Enterprise on UPN at 8 pm

In a preemptive movie, TBS/TNT have acquired the cable broadcast rights to three New Line films, two of which won’t be released until later on in 2004, according to Variety.  The two new films, a sequel to Blade called Blade: Trinity with Wesley Snipes, and Monster-in-Law with Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez, were packaged with a current film, Laws of Attraction with Pierce Brosnan.  The latter has been out in theatres since April 30 and thru May 24 has pulled in just $16.9 million at the domestic box office.

NBC Sports and the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) have signed a deal in which the network will broadcast eight Built Ford Tough Series competitions during 2005.  The Outdoor Life Network and PBR already work together to cover the sport.  Tommy Roy will continue to exec produce the PBR events on NBC Sports.  As an aside, professional bull riding events already air for more than 235 prime time programming hours annually with over 1 million live event attendees.

The season ender of Eve on UPN earned a 1.4/4 A18-49, and a 1.8/6 among W18-34.  At 9pm CBS was well ahead with a 6.5/16 for Raymond/Two and a Half Men, with the crowning final hour of Fox’s The Swan ranking #2 with a 4.8/12 (6.2/16 and #1 among W18-34).  The Girlfriends season finale on UPN earned a 1.8/4 A18-49 and a 2.9/7 among W18-34.  At 10p CBS’ huge win with CSI Miami 8.0/20 dusted the competition – ABC’s ending hour of A Beautiful Mind earned a 2.1/5, and NBC’s repeat of L&O: SVU 2.9/7.

WWE Enterprises announced additions to the WWE 24/7 management team. Steven Lazas was upped to Director/Broadcast Operations where he will oversee digitizing and maintaining WWE’s professional wrestling archive.  He will also manage staff and equipment necessary for VOD/SVOD programming and metadata delivery.  Steven Finkelstein was named as Producer for WWE 24/7.  He joined WWE in 1997 and was promoted to his previous position as Producer for WWE Home Video in 2002.  Shannon Skemp was named as Director/Business Operations and Development.  She will manage the WWE 24/7’s implementation and operations including its financial, resource and vendor aspects.  Jill Andrews was named as Director/Affiliate Marketing, which entails managing and developing marketing, advertising and promotions.

Jason Naft has been upped to National Sales Manager at Tribune’s WBZL/Miami from Account Executive.  The announcement was made by WBZL GSM, Ally DiPalma.

Bruno Cohen has been named VP/GM of KMAX, the Viacom owned station in Sacramento.  Bruno makes the move from CNBC where he was EVP/Business News.  KMAX broadcasts six hours of news each day, M-F, so a new GM with strong news credentials was a critical piece.

Dennis Patton has been named COO for Boston based XY.tv.  XY.tv is a network dedicated to the worlds of Generation X and Generation Y, that is youth targeted programming.  The appointment of Dennis was made by XY.tv’s founder and President/CEO, John Garabedian. Dennis has been working as a consultant to XY.tv for the past 15 months and was instrumental in the December 15 launch of the network.  As COO, he will continue to oversee the network’s distribution initiatives, heading the affiliate sales and marketing team, in addition to responsibilities for strategic business development, programming, marketing and network operations.

Casting NoteCBS is looking for the next Diva of Domesticity and is currently accepting applications.  The 12 contestants will be chosen base on creativity, style, personality and communication skills – after all, if you can’t explain how to put together a really beautiful crowned pork roast, what’s the point?  Check out www.cbs.com for applications and be sure to include a 2-min tape of yourself.  Deadline is June 18.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
Led by Texas congressman Martin Dies, the U.S. House of Representatives establishes a committee to purge “un-Americanism.” Later known as the House Un-American Activities Committee, or HUAC, this group targets communists and other radicals. It remains active until 1975.

Answer to yesterday’s Trivia Question: Why is there a statue of Jack Benny in the little town of Rancho Cucamonga? A longtime sketch on the show featured Mel Blanc as the station master announcing the arrival/departure of the train bound for Anaheim, Asuza and Cucamonga.  A favorite bit was to goof on the last city, Cucamonga, and split its name into two Cuca – Monga.  This was beautifully executed in an episode which began with Blanc announcing “All aboard for Anaheim, Asuza and Cuca ….. “, [insert an entire sketch here], ending with “…. Monga.”  Kudos to:  Sharon Cauthen-WNYC Radio/NY; Ken Olshansky-Scholastic Entertainment/NY; Loren Boiarsky-AMC/NY; Gregory Chang-ImaginAsian Ent/NY; Jan Hummel-MARC USA/Chicago; Fred Boneberg-KDAF/Dallas; Kathy Carlson-Cuneo Adv/Bloomington MN; Carie Reeder-SpotPlus/Dallas; Donna Schimmenti Azarian-Interconnect of the Twin Cities/Eden Prairie; Darlene Lieblich-Fox Cable Networks/LA; Alan Perris-Perris/Hubert Prods/LA; Nancy Lee-Carat USA/Irvine; Suki Yamashita-Paramount Pictures/LA.
