Lucky number seven for FOX as the network ended the current broadcast season on top among A18-49. CBS notched its eighth time in nine years as the most-watched network. Even though the season concludes today, the rankings will hold firm with FOX at a 3.5 rating average among A18-49 and 9.7 million total viewers for the season. CBS is next with an average 2.9 rating with A18-49 and 11.6 million total viewers; ABC is finishing in third place with an average 2.5 A18-49 rating and 8.5 million total viewers; and NBC will likely end in fourth place with an average 2.3 A18-49 rating and 7.0 million total viewers. Among these four networks, all experienced a downturn in total viewers and key demo results with NBC down the most at -15% in total viewers and the A18-49 demo; CBS decreased a smidge in total viewers and -9% with A18-49; ABC is down a bit in total viewers and -7% with the demo; and FOX also is down slightly in both A18-49 viewers and total viewers.
Nancy Grace is departing as host of the syndicated frosh series Swift Justice distributed by CBS Television Distribution, opting to not move to the West Coast as the court show switches its production base to Los Angeles. Nevada District Court Judge Jackie Glass, based in Las Vegas will take over as host of the show. Grace will remain as host of her HLN program which emanates from Atlanta where she has her home with her husband and twin children.
This August 1, Current TV bows the new original series 50 Documentaries To See Before You Die hosted by documentary expert Morgan Spurlock. The series with five one-hour episodes examines how, during the last 25 years, the documentary feature film has emerged into the mainstream becoming a lucrative player at the box office and further impacting society and our American culture. The series will spotlight such well-known documentaries as Roger & Me, The Thin Blue Line, Inside Job, March of the Penguins and Hoop Dreams among others.
Yesterday, Sundance Channel renewed the fashion-rescue series, All On The Line for a sophomore run, the same day it aired the series’ first season finale. All On The Line stars Joe Zee, the Creative Director of ELLE revealing the sometimes intense and not-so-glamorous world of fashion design. Authentic Entertainment produces the series.
Starting this Saturday, MSG Network launches its third annual Summer Block Party with themed programming blocks each night beginning at 7p:
- Classic Mondays: Beginning May 30, the network will air new series Who Wore It Best examining New York’s iconic uniform numbers from every sport and hosted by Sirius XM radio personality Dino Costa. Also on Monday, new episodes of MSG Vault will air along with Game 365 and Halls of Fame with new eps opening in June.
- Countdown Tuesdays: Featuring 10 to One (debuting May 31); MSG Countdown; and Countdown In 60.
- Boxing Wednesdays: MSG’s Fight Night Classics; Golden Gloves; Battle of the Badges; and In the Ring with John Duddy
- Hoops Thursdays: EBS Basketball from Rucker Park; New York Liberty; MSG ProFiles; and Knicks In 60
- Music Fridays powered by Fuse: Featuring special music documentaries

LIN TV Corp. agreed to carry Bounce TV in five of its markets when the network launches this fall. LIN TV made a multi-year deal to carry Bounce TV, the first-ever over-the-air broadcast TV network created exclusively for African American audiences, in Indianapolis, Hartford-New Haven, Norfolk, Dayton and Mobile-Pensacola. This deal marks the second major distribution pact for Bounce TV after completing an initial deal with Raycom Media where the Raycom stations will carry Bounce TV in 26 markets. At launch time this fall, Bounce TV has a goal to be available in 50% of US TV households.
Filmmaker Peter Berg and HBO join forces for a new six-episode primetime reality series, On Freddie Roach. HBO will present the series with Berg directing and executive producing the co-production from Film 44 and Atticus Entertainment. Cameras will hone in on Freddie Roach, the famous boxing trainer who owns and runs the Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood, where he has produced a number of world boxing champs. The series will follow Roach as he works with up-and-coming stars, hosts the many celebrity visitors to his gym, his involvement in other outside interests all the while coping with Parkinson’s disease. HBO will premiere the series in early 2012.
Also on tap for HBO is a comedy series in development from author Sam Lipsyte, reports THR. The quirky comedy, People City is about a 25-year old guy hired by an eccentric New York couple to be their child’s caregiver. Lipsyte will be involved as writer and executive producer along with Michael London as executive producer and Jocelyn Hays Simpson as co-executive producer.
HISTORY has two projects on the front burner:
- The Bible – A five-episode, ten-hour docu-drama produced by Mark Burnett. The scripted series will sport live action combined with CGI which will launch in 2013. This project marks Burnett’s first scripted project and he will serve as executive producer along with Roma Downey and Richard Bedser; Dirk Hoogstra and Julian P. Hobbs are the executive producers for History.
- The Hatfields and the McCoys – HISTORY approved the new scripted miniseries for a 2012 premiere to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the notorious family feud. Kevin Costner will headline the cast playing “Devil” Anse Hatfield. Leslie Greif’s production company, Thinkfactory Media will produce and Costner will also be a producing partner.
Following the success of its series Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, MTV ordered to series Married Young. The one-hour docu-series will focus on young couples during their first year of marriage, especially looking at the stresses and responsibilities that ensue after the honeymoon fades.
Production has begun on the telenovela Popland, a scripted series produced completely by MTV Latin America, a unit of Viacom Inc. Popland will be shot on location and on-set in Colombia sporting a cast of Latin American and US talent. The series with 70 one-hour episodes shot in hi-def stars Sara Cobo and Ricardo Abarca from Mexico; Jon Ecker from the US; and Manuela Gonzalez from Colombia. Popland will debut pan-regionally on MTV Latin America this fall and also air on Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas in the US; MTV Spain and MTV Italy (specific premiere dates to be announced).
MGM working with Michael Hirst and Morgan O’Sullivan, the creative team behind Camelot and The Tudors on a 10-episode drama series, The Vikings, per THR. MGM will distribute The Vikings in the US and to international markets. Hirst will likely serve as head writer on the series as well as executive producer with O’Sullivan as executive producer along with producers/managers Sherry Marsh and Alan Gasmer. Production will begin in 2012 at O’Sullivan’s new studio in Ireland. The Vikings will be an Irish-Canadian co-production with MGM financing the project expenses of Canada and Ireland.
Showtime landed Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Edward James Olmos for the sixth season of its drama series Dexter. Olmos will play a professor of religious studies. Production on the sixth season commences today in Los Angeles and Showtime will debut the new run this fall.
Chris Meloni will not return to NBC’s Law & Order: SVU series for its 13th season as contract negotiations fell apart with NBC Universal, cites TVLine. Meloni has played Detective Stabler on the crime drama since its debut in 1999.
FX cast Fernanda Andrade (Undercovers, CSI: NY) for a recurring role on the fourth season of Sons of Anarchy. Andrade will play Elyda, an attractive Latina babysitter.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX batted in a win Saturday night at 1.3/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX with its Saturday Baseball did best at 8p with a 1.3/5 while ABC’s movie and NBC’s Chase tied for #2 at 0.7/3. FOX remained steady with more Baseball at 1.3/5 and a three-way tie for second place happened between ABC’s Spider-Man movie, NBC’s Law & Order: LA repeat and Univision’s weekly Sabado Gigante all posting an 0.8/3 each. CBS snuck in to win the 10p hour with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.1/4 and it was still competitive for second place as ABC’s movie and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU encore each delivered 1.0/3.

Opening primetime at 7p, a tie occurred between ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos season finale and CBS’ 60 Minutes at 1.6/5 each with FOX in second place with the average of The Simpsons rerun and the American Dad season ender at 1.4/5. ABC’s presentation of the Billboard Music Awards won the 8p hour at 2.8/8 followed by FOX’s average of its season finales of The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers at 2.3/7. Independent worldwide marketing and technology agency, LBi named Kate Thorp to its US Board of Directors based in New York. Former AOL executive, Megan Barbour comes to Oberon Media as VP/Business Intelligence and Strategy. Oxygen Media taps Sunil Chadda as CFO, effective immediately. Sunil will have oversight of Oxygen’s financial systems in addition to the establishment of the network’s strategic and long-term goals. Previously, Sunil was at NBCUniversal where he served as VP/Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis. In his new role at Oxygen, Sunil reports to Jason Klarman, President, Oxygen Media and to Salil Mehta, COO/CFO, NBCUniversal Entertainment and Digital Networks and Integrated Media.
Concetta Lombardi hired by Eden Road Trading, a unit of Horizon Media as VP/Director of Local Broadcast. Concetta joins Eden Road Trading from Mediaedge:cia/GroupM where she was Partner/Local Broadcast Account Manager in charge of $60 million in local television, radio and cable.
