Filmmaker Peter Berg and HBO join forces for a new six-episode primetime reality series, On Freddie Roach.  HBO will present the series with Berg directing and executive producing the co-production from Film 44 and Atticus Entertainment.  Cameras will hone in on Freddie Roach, the famous boxing trainer who owns and runs the Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood, where he has produced a number of world boxing champs. The series will follow Roach as he works with up-and-coming stars, hosts the many celebrity visitors to his gym, his involvement in other outside interests all the while coping with Parkinson’s disease. HBO will premiere the series in early 2012.

Also on tap for HBO is a comedy series in development from author Sam Lipsyte, reports THR.  The quirky comedy, People City is about a 25-year old guy hired by an eccentric New York couple to be their child’s caregiver.  Lipsyte will be involved as writer and executive producer along with Michael London as executive producer and Jocelyn Hays Simpson as co-executive producer.

HISTORY has two projects on the front burner:

  • The Hatfields and the McCoys – HISTORY approved the new scripted miniseries for a 2012 premiere to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the notorious family feud.  Kevin Costner will headline the cast playing “Devil” Anse Hatfield.  Leslie Greif’s production company, Thinkfactory Media will produce and Costner will also be a producing partner.

Following the success of its series Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, MTV ordered to series Married Young. The one-hour docu-series will focus on young couples during their first year of marriage, especially looking at the stresses and responsibilities that ensue after the honeymoon fades.

Production has begun on the telenovela Popland, a scripted series produced completely by MTV Latin America, a unit of Viacom Inc.  Popland will be shot on location and on-set in Colombia sporting a cast of Latin American and US talent.  The series with 70 one-hour episodes shot in hi-def stars Sara Cobo and Ricardo Abarca from Mexico; Jon Ecker from the US; and Manuela Gonzalez from Colombia.  Popland will debut pan-regionally on MTV Latin America this fall and also air on Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas in the US; MTV Spain and MTV Italy (specific premiere dates to be announced).
