Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 25, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing. In second qtr 2006, Nielsen Media Research will begin measuring VOD viewership. For the first six months, Nielsen will concentrate on 7-day time-shift viewing, that is shows recorded ‘live’ and watched within a seven day period. By fourth qtr 2006, they’ll expand their measurement to include programs recorded and watched at a much later date. That programming may including movies, ppv events, and so-called library shows. Will Tony Soprano be brought back for a 7th season? Could be. While shooting gets underway for what was assumed to be the sixth and final season, HBO is reportedly chatting with show creator David Chase about a potential 7th season. You may recall last New Year’s Eve live broadcast on NBC when Tommy Lee, drummer for the group Motley Crue, used an expletive in his New Year’s Eve greeting. Since then, Jeff Zucker has said Motley Crue will not be invited back as a guest on NBC. According to The New York Times, the group is taking exception to Zucker’s stand and has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the network claiming discrimination and violations of its first amendments rights to free speech. The lawsuit says NBC is bowing to pressure from the FCC and as a result banning the group from its airwaves has cost the musicians untold amounts of money in the potential sales of its upcoming albums as a result of its reduced media exposure. In the suit Motley Crue has requested the ban be ruled as unconstitutional and NBC pay unspecified financial damages. NBC released a statement that read in part: “To ensure compliance with its broadcast standards, NBC has the right to decide not to invite back guests who violate those standards and use an expletive during a live entertainment program. The lawsuit Motley Crue has filed against us is meritless.” * MORE GOOD STUFF *
At the end of April last year, ABC News Nightline aired a special episode wherein Ted Koppel read the 721 names of the men and women who were killed in action and non-hostile situations in Iraq since the war started. This Monday, Memorial Day, Nightline will again honor those who have died with a special 45-minute episode. For each name, his or her photograph will be shown along with name, military branch, rank, and age as Koppel reads each name aloud. In anticipation of TNT‘s upcoming six-week television event, Steven Spielberg’s Into the West, Turner Entertainment Ad Sales and Marketing has created new multi-dimensional advertising and promotional sponsorships with Dodge and ING in television, print, and online. In print, both sponsors will be featured in the ads in several top regional and national papers. The television piece will include a wide variety of on-air creative for both the individual sponsoring brands and Into the West. Online, both will receive co-branded banners on the Into the West site ( www.intothewest.com) along side various interactive components tied to the event. Into the West premieres on June 10 at 8-10p, with each week’s installment airing 3x over the weekend – Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8p. Rainbow Media has teamed with US Airways to provide original content to airline passengers aboard 767 and Airbus 330 flights. Content will originate from AMC, IFC, WE: Women’s Entertainment and VOD service Mag Rack. E! will launch a new reality series called Fight for Fame, featuring young actor wannabes all looking for their big break. The show launches on Sunday, June 5 at 10p with five actors competing to be signed by a major Hollywood talent agency. Two agents, Adam Lieblein and Greg Meyer of the Acme Talent & Literary agency, watch from the sidelines as these actors prove their talents and ambition to industry professionals, and at the end, just one will be signed. E! has ordered 10 eps. Next season on NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the 22 eps ordered will rotate detectives – half of the episodes will feature Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, the other half Chris Noth and his new partner played by Annabella Sciorra (formerly known as Tony Soprano’s mistress). NBC Universal has signed Jim O’Doherty and David M. Israel to two year development deals. The pair will work on creating new 30m comedy projects for the studio. HGTV has announced a new special, airing in five 30m parts, called Todd Oldham’s Handmade Modern (Co.Op.), based on the designer’s new book, Handmade Modern: Mid-Century Inspired Projects For Your Home (Regan/HarperCollins). Scheduled to debut this fall, the program focuses on Oldham demonstrating how to create home accessories and furnishings using practical ideas inspired by mid-century modern design. Coyote TV, Inc. has cleared weekly series Coolfuel Roadtrip on 16 of the Viacom Television Station Group stations for Fall 2005. Clearances include WPSG/Philadelphia, KBHK/San Francisco; WSBK/Boston; KTXA/Dallas; WUPA/Atlanta and WKBD/Detroit.
