CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/24/06

Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, May 24, 2006, the occasion of our daughter Brittany Turner’s 21st birthday, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC has named Charles Gibson as anchor of World News Tonight, effective Monday. For the month of June, Charlie will have the dual responsibilities as co-anchor of Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts Monday through Wednesday each week, and anchor of World News Tonight Monday through Thursday. Starting in July, he will anchor the primetime news exclusively, going head to head with Katie Couric come September. After the death of Peter Jennings, Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were named co-anchors of World News Tonight. Woodruff was seriously injured while reporting in Iraq, and Vargas has since been the solo anchor. According to Vargas and David Westin, ABC News President, Vargas has asked her responsibilities at ABC News be cut back as she is also preparing for her upcoming maternity leave. Vargas will return as anchor of 20/20 in the fall and will host primetime specials. Furthermore, having Gibson take the anchor chair of World News Tonight, said Westin, will give Woodruff the extended time he needs to recover and eventually return to the anchor chair next to Gibson for ABC News.  And frankly, it’s about time they gave it to Charlie.  As for who will step into Charlie’s shoes at GMA, no indications yet from ABC, but my bet is on Weekend GMA-er Bill Weir.

Tonight’s Finales:
ABC
:   Lost a 9-11p
Fox:    American Idol 8-10p
Bravo:  Top Chef at 10p
The final night of the May 2006 Sweep!

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Canada’s #1 comedy series Corner Gas will be coming to American TV. CTV has signed an agreement with Arthur Hasson’s Multi-Platform Distribution Company to market the show to U.S. networks right away. Since its launch in January 2004, Corner Gas has been the only scripted series on Canada’s Top 20 list; it was nominated for an International Emmy Award in 2004; and won the equivalent of Canada’s Emmy Award, the Gemini Award, in 2005. Featuring an ensemble cast, the comedy is about a group of nobodies who don’t do much of anything in the fictional rural town of Dog River, Saskatchewan. (And if you’re a fan of Arthur’s as I am, you’ll want to add his email to your address book. Give him a shout!  [email protected].)

TLC has started production on a new half-hour primetime series, Cover Shot, with host supermodel Frederique van der Wal. Cover Shot debuts August 18 and will show ordinary women that they can grace the cover of a fashion magazine if given the proper tools. The “cover model” will also see her face on a billboard displayed before millions in New York City. The award-winning photographer Richard Dean has also signed on. The show will air along with What Not to Wear for a fashion block each Friday evening.

The Ultimate Fighter: The Comeback returns for season four on Spike TV with production starting this week in Las Vegas. Premiering August 17, this season has sixteen former UFC fighters living together and burning to win a major UFC title; the surprise is the winning middleweight and welterweight are both guaranteed a title fight and a six-figure cash award. The show is hosted by UFC President, Dana White.

Target Entertainment Ltd has inked a number of new international broadcast rights deals for its comedy/reality program, The Dudesons, which is not at all for young kids, but no doubt they’ll watch.  This summer the series will also debut in the US on SpikeTV, which coincides with the July 11 North America release of the feature film The Dudesons Movie.

Note to Self:  Tomorrow night, see if you can clear the couch of young male children by 9p and settle in for a chat between Michael Eisner and Bob Iger on Eisner’s CNBC show. And if that’s not entertaining enough, Billy Crystal is scheduled to chat as well. Bring ice cream – mint chocolate chip goes best with TV after 9p.

The CBS Corp. has put its radio stations in 10 markets up for sale in an effort to boost its lagging radio division. The markets include Austin, San Antonio, Buffalo, Rochester, Cincinnati, Columbus, Fresno, Greensboro-Winston/Salem, Kansas City and Memphis. In April, the company said its radio revenue plummeted 6% in first quarter due to decreased ad revenue and programming changes at 27 stations.

Correction
: The new Food Network show featuring Paula Deen’s sons, Bobby and Jaime is called Road Tasted. We inadvertently reported that the title is Road Tested. The plan is to taste the best local, homemade foods around the country, not test them. The show premieres July 11 at 10p.

Cynopsis Question for Buyers:  Of all the new fall broadcast network series you’ve read about or seen tape on, which one are you most excited about?  Respond here with Network Favorite in the subject line, and I’ll post your votes here on Friday. This one may take a little thought, so I’ll leave the question up thru Thursday’s edition.
