On Friday, Animal Planet rolls out a new series, Louisiana Lockdown at 10p which is set inside one of the country’s largest maximum security penitentiaries, Angola Prison.  The series focuses on Warden Burl Cain and a unique correctional program he introduced where inmates earn the opportunity for a temporary release to train animals outside the prison walls.  Louisiana Lockdown is produced for Animal Planet by Original Media.

This fall, REELZCHANNEL will air the US premiere of the eight-hour miniseries World Without End.  The miniseries is an adaptation of Ken Follett’s novel set in 14th century England and the follow up to Follett’s novel The Pillars of the Earth.  The miniseries is produced by Tandem Communications and Take 5 Productions in co-production with Galafilm, in association with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Films.  REELZCHANNEL will also provide viewers with behind the scenes footage of the miniseries including bios about the careers of the cast and creators.

With 14 half-hour episodes, Lifetime’s upcoming new docu-series follows the everyday life of single mom, Bristol Palin when Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp premieres on June 19 at 10p with back-to-back episodes.  Lifetime will schedule double episodes each Tuesday. The docu-series is produced by Associated Television International.

truTV’s series South Beach Tow ends its first season tonight 930p and the network has already ordered a second season consisting of 13 episodes.  During its inaugural season to date, South Beach Tow delivered 1.5 million total viewers and 786,000 among A18-49.  The second season of South Beach Tow will bow in early fall 2012.  South Beach Tow is executive produced by Jennifer Lopez and Simon Fields of Nuyorican Productions and Benjamin Nurick, Josh Ackerman and Zachary Werner of Bodega Pictures.

Long-running reality television series, Dog the Bounty Hunter has been canceled by A&E Network.  The series completed its eighth season last week featuring Duane “Dog” Chapman and his family crew tracking down criminals in Hawaii and in his home state of Colorado. 

Eugene Polley, the inventor of the first wireless TV remote control device for Zenith Electronics, died Sunday at a suburban Chicago hospital at the age of 96.  Mr. Polley created his Flash-Matic in 1955, which pointed a beam of light at photo cells in the corners of the TV screen which activated the picture and sound and also changed channels.  Throughout Mr. Polley’s 47-year career as an engineer, he earned 18 US patents.  Mr. Polley along with his fellow Zenith engineer Robert Adler, were honored in 1997 with an Emmy for their work in pioneering TV remotes.

International distributor DCD Rights made deals with major broadcasters involving the sale of television series.  Coast Guard Alaska produced by Al Roker Entertainment for The Weather Channel with 20 one-hour episodes was picked up by Danmarks Radio and Tele 5 Poland.  Discovery Networks UK acquired Vet School with six half-hour episodes to air on its UK channel Animal Planet from Prospero Productions for ABC Australia.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Catherine Keener and Charlie Kaufman, star and writer/director respectively of the drama film Synecdoche, New York are teaming for the first time on a TV project, developing a comedy series for HBO.   The proposed show will center on Keener’s character who is juggling with reality during a typical day in her life.  Keener will also produce the series with Kaufman as EP, writer and director. 

FremantleMedia Enterprises made a first-look agreement with Barry Josephson, the producer behind FOX’s Bones, to develop new drama content for US cable networks and the global marketplace.  The deal with Josephson Entertainment also has Tia Maggini as VP/Television who will work with Jeff Tahler, FME’s SVP/Global Content and Tony Optican, SVP/Scripted Programming for FremantleMedia North America, to develop new projects. 

Mnet, the US TV network dedicated to Asian American content revealed its 2012-2013 programming slate.  The network has three new original series on tap:

  • Angry Little Asian Girl is compared to South Park with an Asian attitude.  This animated series delves into the frustrations of being a modern-day Asian teen growing up with traditional parents.  This series will premiere in fall 2012.
  • Kollaboration is a talent show which began with one show in Los Angeles and has expanded to 15 shows across the US.  Mnet will follow the tour as the next best young Asian American talent is selected.  This series is slated for fall 2012.
  • YTF aka Yesterday Today Forever showcases seven of the hottest YouTube celebrities and unites them to create THE COLOSSAL Asian American Entertainment Group.  The group will launch a coast to coast concert series performing coast singing, dancing and doing sketch comedy.  This series is set to premiere later this year.

These new series join other Mnet series: Beats Per Mnet airing Wednesdays at 9p; Hello Pop! airing weekdays at 7p; and Short Notice with its third season debuting June 13 airing on Wednesdays at 8p.

On the heels of NBC’s Smash finishing its first season, it was revealed several series regulars will not be returning for the second season. Raza Jaffrey and Jaime Cepero will not be reprising their roles along with Brian d’Arcy James and recurring guest Will Chase

Jason Gedrick (Iron Eagle, Stacking) will join Showtime’s drama series Dexter for the seventh season.  Gedrick will appear in a multi-episode run playing the manager of a Miami gentlemen’s club that becomes linked to a high-profile murder case.  Production on Dexter commences this month in Los Angeles and the seventh season debuts on Showtime September 30 at 9p.

E! has re-upped its contract with E! News Anchor/Managing Editor Giuliana Rancic, extending their agreement with her through April 2015.  The terms of the new deal has Rancic continuing as Anchor and serving as Managing Editor of E! News for the next three years as well as hosting duties for the network’s Live From the Red Carpet events.  Rancic will also continue to co-host the weekly comedy series Fashion Police and serving as host for other specials.  Furthermore, E! will have first-look rights to Rancic’s ideas for series, specials and other scripted and non-scripted projects.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  In a relatively sleepy Saturday, ABC delivered a first place win at 0.9/4 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX hit in a win during 8p with FOX Baseball at 0.8/4 followed by NBC’s repeat of America’s Got Talent at 0.7/3.  At 9p, NBC’s America’s Got Talent rerun moved to the top with a 1.1/4 and ABC’s Spider-Man 3 movie was next at 1.0/4.  Then at 10p, ABC was first with more of its Saturday Movie of the Week at 1.3/4 while CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery and NBC’s encore of Law & Order: SVU tied for #2 at 1.0/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC had the winning lineup Sunday delivering a 2.4/7 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  The season finale of America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC won at 7p with a 1.5/5 though CBS’ 60 Minutes was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.4/5.  ABC remained on top at 8p with the first hour of the Billboard Music Awards at 2.5/8 and the season finales of FOX’s The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers at an average of 1.9/6 claimed second place.  The Billboard Music Awards on ABC hit its highest ratings of the night during 9p at 3.0/8 followed by the one-hour season conclusion of Family Guy on FOX at 2.6/7.  At 10p, ABC polished off its clean sweep of the night with one more win for the Billboard Music Awards at 2.6/7 and NBC’s season climax of Celebrity Apprentice was #2 at 2.3/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Industry veteran Rod Perth was appointed as the new President/CEO of NATPE||Content First, effective immediately.  Rod will have oversight for the vision, strategies, marketing, programming and financial/administrative operations of the organization.  Rod will report to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors while he supervises a management team of six people and a total staff of 20.  Before being selected in this role, Rod was Founder/President of RHP Media Consulting in addition to Co-Founder and President/Television for REELZCHANNEL.

Former CCO at Prometheus Entertainment, Scott Hartford established 7iRON MEDIA, a new production company specializing in character-driven non-fiction and docu-soap content for cable networks.  Scott’s more than 500 hours of credits include The Girls Next Door, Kendra and Ancient Aliens.  With his new company, Scott will continue to partner with Prometheus Entertainment’s founder/president Kevin Burns on upcoming projects. 

Geoff Daniels was promoted to EVP/GM of Nat Geo WILD up from the previous position of SVP at the network.  Geoff has been with the network since its launch in March 2010.  He reports to David Lyle, CEO, National Geographic Channels US and Global Programming and Howard T. Owens, President, National Geographic Channels US.

As of June 25, Monica Neal begins her new position as SVP/Public Relations at TV One.  The former Turner Broadcasting executive will head and oversee all communications and public relations, public affairs, talent relations, viewer services and investor relations for TV One.  

WE tv tapped Mary Scotti to the role of VP/Business Affairs where she will supervise the negotiations of the network’s rights involving original productions, marketing, business development and talent agreements.  Based in New York, Mary reports to Theresa Patiri, VP/Production Management and Operations and Dom Atteritano, VP/Legal and Business Affairs.  Prior to this appointment, Mary was VP/Business and Legal Affairs at Viacom Media Networks. 

Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. elevated Richard Lom to VP/SBS Entertainment based in Miami.  Richard will manage all facets of the daily operations, live concerts, worldwide management, new TV development, marketing and partnerships among other duties.  Richard reports to Albert Rodriguez, Chief Revenue Officer of SBS’ Consolidated Operations.

Headquartered in New York, JWT named Matt MacDonald and Ryan Kutscher as Co-Chief Creative Officers at JWT New York.  Matt has served as Executive Creative Director at JWT New York while Ryan joins from CP+B where he was Creative Director.  They both report to Jeff Benjamin, CCO, JWT North America.

KSL Media has hired Larry Most as VP/Business Development for its Miami office.  Larry will head the expansion of KSL Media’s client roster in the Southeast region of the US and will report to Mike Oddi, CMO.
