Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES

Look for a multimedia rollout of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, the new animated series heading to Disney XD this summer. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and newcomer Falcon will get a one-hour preview Sunday, May 26 (11 a.m.), on Disney XD’s Marvel Universe before the series launch Sunday, July 7. Online at DisneyXD.com/Marvel, fans can play Hawkeye in a side-scrolling action defense game, “Avengers Tower Assault”; a second game will launch July 7. Additionally, “The Avengers Protocol: Pt. 1” and “The Avengers Protocol: Pt. 2” episodes will be available on iTunes on May 27. A special two-minute preview of the premiere episode will air during the 8:30 p.m. telecast of “Jessie” on Disney Channel on June 28, and preview eps will be available on DisneyXD.com, WATCHDisneyXD.com and the WATCH Disney XD app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Additionally, verified WATCH Disney XD viewers will be able to watch the series premiere. Exec producers of the news series are Alan Fine (The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor), Dan Buckley (The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Stan Lee serves as one of the series’ executive producers.

Talk about, ahem, Tuning in… Nickelodeon yesterday released a free, nine-minute featurette of its newest animated series, Sanjay and Craig, exclusively on iTunes. “The Rad Awesomeness of Sanjay and Craig” gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the series before its on-air premiere on Saturday, May 25 (10:30am). The feature is narrated by Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), who also voices Hector Flanagan  Sanjay’s eye-patch-wearing, unflappable, underrated and unselfconscious friend in the regular series.

!MAGINATION AWARDS LUMINARIES

Congratulations to Hub Network CEO Margaret Loesch, who Cynopsis Kids honors this year with our Luminary Award for Lifetime Achievement. Loesch will get the official spotlight at CynKids’ !magination Awards, June 4 in New York, but she shares some insights with us here:

What’s been the biggest change in the kids television business since you started working, at places like Hanna-Barbera and Marvel?
There’s more competition and more choices, venues and devices on which to access entertainment than ever before.

What’s stayed the same?
Content is still king.

What make great programming for Hub?
We look for shows with strong characters and great stories, and content that doesn’t talk down to children and is smart enough to appeal to the whole family.

What was your favorite show as a child?
I had two that I loved equally. Kermit the Frog was on a local D.C. TV show. It was an early version of Kermit: he was guileless, bohemian, and funny. And ‘Sky King,’ because I wanted to have a plane and fly around on adventures.

Who do you consider to be your mentor and why?
After 43 years in television, I can’t possibly narrow it down to one. Some of the many people who have influenced me include Joe Barbera, Bill Hanna, Stan Lee, and Jim Henson, as well as a handful of bold businessmen, including Rupert Murdoch, Haim Saban and Chase Carey.

What’s your best advice to this year’s college graduates?
Understand that following your passion requires ferocious tenacity. But as you pursue your passion, remember to not always take yourself so seriously.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Production is under way on Star Wars Rebels, a new animated series from Lucasfilm Animation that’s slated to premiere in fall 2014 on Disney XD as a one-hour special followed by a global rollout on the network. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes) is at the helm, joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer. Filoni served as supervising director of the Emmy-nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. The new series is set between the events of Episode III and IV  an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen.

A premiere and a schedule change are heading to PBS Kids in October. New math series Peg + Cat will debut Monday, Oct. 7, the same day the network takes weekend regular Thomas & Friends to a daily schedule. The network will kick off Peg + Cat’s premiere with a special one-hour broadcast of two back-to-back episodes, along with integrated online and mobile content. Thomas will kick off its new season with the national broadcast of upcoming 60-minute movie special King of the Railway.

Ratings Redux: It’s easy being Orange. The second season premiere of Cartoon Net’s original series Annoying Orange (May 16, 7:30 p.m.) ranked No. 1 in its time period among all boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Food for thought. At deadline, CynKids learned that Disney Channel has pulled an episode of Jessie that pokes fun at a character who won’t eat gluten. Viewers were able to access the episode early via VOD, and more than 2,000 people signed a petition at Change.org urging the network to yank the episode, which could be seen as encouraging people to make fun of celiac disease (which is treated with a gluten-free diet). Disney also issued an apology on the series’ Facebook page.

It’s official. Angry Birds will fly to the big screen on July 1, 2016. Rovio is producing the animated film in-house, the first feature film for the company, and Sony Pictures has scored worldwide distribution rights. Whether or not the property will still have legs, er wings, three years from now remains to be seen, although Rovio is certainly continuing to feed the pipe including its release of 52 animated Angry Birds shorts in March.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Among the announcements surrounding Microsoft’s new Xbox One yesterday was word that Microsoft will morph its megahit Halo videogame franchise into a premium live-action series exclusively for Xbox Live and produced by Steven Spielberg with game developer 343 Studios. Xbox One, due in the fall, will replace the Xbox 360.

Amazon is expanding its licensing deal with NBCUniversal to exclusively offer a host of programming, including some kids fare. Children’s shows Curious George and Land Before Time will be available via Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, the all-in-one content service that offers movies, TV shows, books, games, and apps.

Can you say synergy? DisneyChannel.com is extending its “Doof’s Daily Dirt” web series for another 26 episodes beginning this summer. The webisodes are based on Disney’s hit Phineas and Ferb feature the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz in a series of misguided antics. In special installment, “Doof Is Due: Shark Tank Announcement,” the web series ties in with Shark Tank, which airs on sister net ABC. A clip from Doof’s pitch to the Shark Tank execs aired on the season finale of the reality series May 17.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is developing the Lego Friends game for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS handheld systems. Scheduled for release this fall, the game will feature offer creative play activities with a focus on building friendship and developing responsibility, all based around the Lego Friends collection of building sets.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

Steady, perhaps, but certainly not slow: DreamWorks Animation made mobile history with the May 17 launch of its Turbo Racing League app accompanied by a staggering $1 million contest presented by Verizon. The game, inspired by DreamWorks’ upcoming summer film (and Netflix series) Turbo, will “shell out” (get it?) a cool million dollars in total cash prizes. The app, developed by DreamWorks Animation in conjunction with PikPok, is available on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android handsets and tablets, and Windows Phone 8. The game is available on all mobile carriers; however, fans who play the game on a Verizon device will have access to exclusive content from the film as well as unique game customization options and insider tips and tricks on game play. To compete for cash prizes, eligible players must achieve daily goals to unlock access into the weekly contest. Winners will be selected based on races between May 16-July 7. Each week, the 10 fastest racers will win cash prizes up to $25,000.
