Microsoft’s popular video game Halo is becoming a live-action TV series, and Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce it. The multi-billion-dollar game franchise inspired the 90-minute Web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, which centered on the game’s protagonist Master Chief. Spielberg will explore Master Chief’s narrative in the series, which will have exclusive interactive Xbox One content.
Simon’s Angels? Simon Cowell will be surrounded by women when The X Factor returns for its third season this fall. FOX has confirmed that Grammy Award-winning artist Kelly Rowland and international pop star Paulina Rubio will join Cowell and Demi Lovato as judges on the singing competition series. “It’s taken more than a decade, but I’m delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!)” said Cowell. “Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different.” The X Factor is produced by Syco Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America.
It’s only a matter of weeks before Prince William and Kate become parents to their royal baby, and ABC is celebrating the occasion with Bringing Up Baby: Royal Edition, a 20/20 special with Barbara Walters. The hour-long broadcast will provide viewers with a look at how the newest generation of royal heirs will be raised. In addition, the special will include a retrospective of Walters’ years of covering the British royals, from their births and weddings to Princess Diana’s funeral to excerpts from Walters’ 1984 electric interview with Prince Charles. Bringing Up Baby: Royal Edition airs Monday, May 27 at 10p.
Tr3s has announced its new original content programming targeting Hispanic adult millennials. Among the highlights: reality series’ Familia de Circo (produced by High Noon Entertainment), about a 40-year family-run circus under the antics and clashing egos of 5 Mexican brothers, and Divas del Azucar (produced by High Noon Entertainment), about a Cuban mother and her two daughters who are bakers to the stars; new novela Fortuna, about the double-life of wealthy casino mogul Adolfo Altamirano; and returning novela Ninas Mal 2.
Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has bowed out of the FX pilot Tyrant due to exhaustion after filming and promoting Life of Pi. The studio is searching for a replacement for Lee.
Due to the tragedy in Oklahoma CBS pulled the tornado-themed Mike & Molly season finale scheduled to air on Monday and replaced it with a repeat. The network will air the episode at a later appropriate date.
GSN will air a sneak peek of its new version of Minute to Win It, hosted by Apolo Anton Ohno, on Thursday, May 23 at 10p, featuring Team “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” The fun-loving married couple dream of being able to afford the wedding they never had and winning money for their kids’ college tuition. Minute to Win It premieres with new episodes on Tuesday, June 25 at 8p. The show is produced by Shine America.
MTV‘s Catfish: The TV Show returns for a supersized 16-episode second season on Tuesday, June 25 at 10p. Once again, viewers will join hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph in their cross-country journey to unite young couples, taking their online-only romantic relationships offline and in person.
Copper, BBC America‘s highest rated original drama, returns with 13 new episodes on Sunday, June 23 at 10p. “This season we wanted to raise the stakes and dive into the 1860s political machine by bringing in a Boss Tweed-like character to shake things up,” said Co-creator and Executive Producer Tom Fontana. Appearing this season is multiple award-winning actress, Alfre Woodard as Hattie Lemaster, a former slave recently arrived to Five Points to start anew; Eamonn Walker (Chicago Fire, Oz), as legendary abolitionist leader, Frederick Douglass; Lee Tergesen (Army Wives, Oz) as wickedly intelligent criminal mastermind Philomen Keating; and Andrew Howard (Hatfields and McCoys) as James O’Rourke, the physically intimidating yet shrewdly observant manager of a budding criminal organization. Copper is a Cineflix (Copper 2) Inc. production in association with BBC America.
The Kennedy Center has chosen Carol Burnett as the recipient of the 16th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The beloved comedienne launched The Carol Burnett Show in 1967, which ran for 11 seasons on CBS, scoring 25 Emmys; Burnett herself won six over the course of her career, not to mention eight Golden Globes, 12 People’s Choice Awards and a Peabody (for the 1979 ABC movie Friendly Fire). Burnett will be awarded the honor in October.
Commemorating Monday’s death of music legend Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for The Doors, Smithsonian Channel will air encore presentations of The Doors: Mr. Mojo Risin’ – The Story of L.A. Woman, next week. The one-hour documentary is an intimate look at the making of what would be the iconic rock band’s final album together. Airdates are Thursday, May 23 at 8p and 11p; Sunday, May 26 at 10p and 1am; and Tuesday, May 28 at 9p and 12a.
STARZ will present special Memorial Day Weekend marathons of Da Vinci’s Demons beginning Friday, May 24 with the three latest episodes of the series airing back-to-back at 9p. Viewers can also watch the entire season on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 on STARZ EDGE, beginning at 9p each night.
Bravo Media has kicked off Summer by Bravo, a multi-platform promotional campaign celebrating the network’s pop culture brand and upcoming programming. This year’s promo features more than 30 Bravo stars, including Curtis Stone, Nene Leakes and Lisa Vanderpump, who find themselves stranded on a deserted island, and having to use their talents to turn it into paradise. Bounty hunters ‘Dog’, Beth and Leland Chapman will continue hunting down America’s most dangerous fugitives. CMT has picked up an additional 11 episodes of the first season of Dog and Beth: On the Hunt. The full order will now total 22 episodes. Production on the back 11 begins immediately to air in August.
RightThisMinute, television’s first broadcast strip reporting on the web’s most intriguing viral videos, has broadened its national footprint with the addition of 41 new stations in 38 new markets; including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Boston. In addition, RightThisMinute has added a weekend version of the show. Premiering in most markets on September 16, the new weekend edition will feature best of segments highlighting the hottest videos of the week, as well as freshly-produced content. RightThisMinute is syndicated by MGM Television and produced by MagicDust Television, in partnership with Cox Media Group, Raycom Media and E.W. Scripps.
The FX pilot The Strain is bulking up its cast. Mia Maestro (Alias) has landed a co-starring role playing Corey Stoll’s love interest Dr. Nora Martinez, a brilliant biochemist. In addition, Jonathan Hyde (Titanic) will play Eldritch Palmer, an elderly tycoon who’s been an invalid since childhood, while Richard Sammel (Inglorious Bastards) will portray mystery man Thomas Eichorst.
Procedural crime drama Crossing Lines has been selected as the premiere screening for the opening ceremonies of the 53rd edition of the Monte-Carlo Television Festival on Sunday, June 9. The new 10-hour series has an international pedigree of stars, including Emmy and Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland, who’ll be honored during the Opening Ceremony with the inaugural Crystal Nymph Award for his lifelong achievements in film and television.

Veteran research executive Julie Piepenkotter has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Research for FX Networks. Piepenkotter, who joined FX as Senior Vice President, Research in 2009, will oversee all facets of program and consumer research for FX, FXM and new network, FXX, which will debut on September 2.
Marianne Gambelli has joined Horizon Media as Executive Vice President, Chief Investment Officer. Gambelli, formerly president of NBC broadcast sales, will be tasked with developing multi-year and multi-platform media deals, as well as seeking out new technologies and media research capabilities.
The NBC Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal has upped Jeff Morris to Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology, effective immediately. Morris previously served as Vice President of Technology for the NBC Owned Stations. In his new role, he will oversee a portfolio that includes technology, sales and traffic operations, environmental health and safety, and FCC compliance.
NBCUniversal has appointed Cherie Cohen as Senior Vice President, Cable Advertising Sales. Cohen will oversee the company’s regional sales offices in Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles and work with NBCUniversal’s 18 cable networks, as well as the sales leadership teams from its two broadcast networks and more than 50 digital properties. She previously served as Vice President, Multimedia Sales at ESPN.
Think Jam, digital marketing agency for the entertainment industry, has appointed Jackie Turnure as Vice President of its Los Angeles office. A triple Emmy award winner with over 15 years experience developing and producing digital content for film, television and games, Turnure previously served as Head of Production at Fourth Wall Studios.
Capablue, specialists in TV Everywhere and connected TV solutions, has named Dominic Laval as Director, Business Development and Operations.Capablue, formerly director at emuse, will lead and manage business operations.
