~ MORE STUFF ~

On the eve of its upfront presentation today at Carnegie Hall, CBS announced yesterday it is canceling seven series including the long-running dramas Cold Case, Ghost Whisperer and Numbers and the midseason frosh drama Miami Medical. Three comedies also were scrubbed from the schedule including Accidentally on Purpose, New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried. CBS did renew Medium for another season as well as Rules of Engagement.

CBS also hammered out negotiations with Charlie Sheen on Monday night to remain on the sitcom Two and a Half Men for two more years. Sheen will make nearly $2 million per episode, settling on $1.8 to $1.9 million per segment, a pay scale similar to what Ray Romano made during his last season of Everybody Loves Raymond.

The CW
serves up its upfront presentation tomorrow and as of yesterday announced it is not renewing Melrose Place. The CW did hand renewals to Life Unexpected for a sophomore season and gave an eighth run to One Tree Hill in addition to approving two new series Nikita and Hellcats. Nikita, produced by Warner Bros. TV and McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision, is a new version focused on the female spy and assassin helmed by Maggie Q. Hellcats, starring Aly Michalka is about a college student who is forced to join her college’s competitive cheerleading squad after she loses her scholarship. Ashley Tisdale and Gail O’Grady also co-star in Hellcats.

Nielsen struck a multi-year deal with Gannett covering the use of Nielsen’s local television ratings services, including overnights and custom applications and software in the local markets where Gannett has stations. Gannett operates 23 television stations in 19 markets, reaching 21 million households. The deal also allows Nielsen to track the usage levels of Gannett’s television station’s websites.

Joshua L. Jamison, President of Charter Communications East Coast Operating Group, died Monday at the age of 54. He had more than 22 years of experience in the telecommunications industry having been with Charter Communications since 1999 in addition to 18 years with Time Warner Cable serving in various capacities. Josh is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son-in-law, mother and two sisters. A funeral service will be held this Thursday, 11a at Friendship Baptist Church, 441 Torrington Road in Litchfield. Memorial contributions may be sent to The American Lung Association, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford, CT 06108.

2010 UPFRONT: ABC

Stephen McPherson, President/ABC Entertainment Group revealed ABC’s schedule for the 2010-2011 season yesterday afternoon at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in NYC. In addition to a roasting courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel during the presentation, ABC welcomed ten new series to its schedule for fall and midseason.

New ABC dramas:

  • Body of Proof – Dana Delany headlines as Dr. Megan Hunt, a brilliant neurosurgeon who, after a car accident, becomes a medical examiner determined to solve mysterious deaths of victims. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • Detroit 1-8-7 – Series shot documentary-style offering viewers an inside look into a Homicide Unit in Detroit. Series stars Michael Imperioli as Detective Louis Fitch as well as Jon Michael Hill, James McDaniel, Aisha Hinds, Natalie Martinez, D.J. Cotrona and Shaun Majumder. From ABC Studios.
  • My Generation – Another series shot documentary-style about a group of high schoolers from Austin, TX as they prepare for graduation. Later, the series joins up with these same graduates ten years later as they return home and revisit their hopes and dreams. From ABC Studios.
  • No Ordinary Family – The Powells, an ordinary family, take a vacation and their plane crashes into the Amazon River. Afterwards, they discover they all possess unique and distinct superpowers. Michael Chiklis stars as dad, Jim Powell and Julie Benz stars as mom, Stephanie Powell. Other cast members include Tate Donovan, Romany Malco, Autumn Reeser, Christina Chang, Kay Panabaker and Jimmy Bennett. From ABC Studios.
  • Off the Map – From executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers and creator Jenna Bans, this medical series is about five young doctors who leave behind their own personal demons to work in a tiny town in the South American jungle. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • The Whole Truth – Legal drama from the perspective of the defense and prosecution and centered on two evenly matched lawyers, Jimmy Brogan (Rob Morrow) who is one of New York’s rising criminal attorneys and Kathryn Peale, the Deputy Bureau Chief in the New York State District Attorney’s office. Series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Bros. Television.

New ABC comedies:

  • Better Together – Relationship comedy that explores three very different relationships at different stages. From Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Silver and Gold Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
  • Happy Endings – Modern-day comedy about what happens to friendships after a couple breaks up at the altar. Elisha Cuthbert heads the ensemble cast produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios.
  • Mr. Sunshine – Matthew Perry helms this comedy playing Ben Donovan, a self-involved manager of a second-rate San Diego sports arena who starts to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday. Allison Janney also stars as Crystal, the arena’s owner. The series is a Matthew Perry Production, Show Money Production, Barnow and Firek Production and FanFare Production, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

ABC has new one alternative series:

  • Secret Millionaire – One-hour series follows some of America’s richest people for one week as they leave behind their posh lifestyles and mansions and live and volunteer incognito in some of the nation’s most impoverished and unsafe communities. The millionaires meet people who are battling a myriad of obstacles and at the end of their experience, they reveal their true identities and each gives away at least $100,000 of their own money. Produced by RDF USA Production.

Returning ABC series include: America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Brothers & Sisters, Castle, Cougar Town, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Grey’s Anatomy, The Middle, Modern Family, Private Practice, Supernanny, V, 20/20 as well as Saturday Night College Football.

2010 UPFRONT: MTV Tr3s

At its upfront today, the newly named Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas will announce its goal to ramp up programming to appeal to a wider US Latino audience. Along with this strategy, Tr3s is now part of MTV Networks International’s US Hispanic and Latin American operations based in Miami. New programming for Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas launches July 12 with an aim to continue offering music and MTV content as well as expanding the brand to include programming aimed at the P12-34 audience in primetime, with an emphasis on co-viewing among teens and their parents.

Programming on Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas: The network additionally will increase its original productions and acquisitions as well as serve up content from MTVNI’s programming library that will fit into three lifestyle categories important to Latinos: Music, considered the heart and soul of Latino life; Making It, offering success stories of Latinos achieving the “Latino American dream”; and Milestones featuring stories that signify coming of age or their rights of passage.

New programs on Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas include: The George Lopez Show, Lucha Libre: USA Masked Warriors, Mis Videos Locos with Paul Rodriguez and the Nickelodeon shows Drake & Josh and The Brothers Garcia. The network will continue to program telenovelas such as Juegos Prohibidos and Ninas Mal. New seasons of Mind of Mencia, Quiero Mis Quinces and Quiero Mi Boda will also be part of the schedule.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Spike TV is delving into the high-stakes underground auction market involving storage containers with a new series titled Auction Heroes. The series follows two friends who buy abandoned storage containers at auction and then resell the contents for profit at pawn shops. Spike TV ordered eight 30m episodes of Auction Heroes from Gurney Productions, which will also have an exclusive access to one of the nation’s largest storage facility chains. The exact cast and premiere date will be announced later.

Actor James Franco rejoins ABC’s General Hospital beginning June 30 as the daytime soap’s summer storyline kicks off. Franco will also appear this summer in the movie Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts and just completed production on the film 127 Hours with former General Hospital actress Amber Tamblyn.

Following the demise of ABC’s Ugly Betty and a stint on Broadway, Vanessa Williams is joining another ABC drama, becoming an evil new housewife on Desperate Housewives. Williams will join the cast of Desperate Housewives’ seventh season this fall, moving to Wisteria Lane bent on inflicting havoc on everyone’s lives.

CNN agreed to honor anchor Campbell Brown’s request to be released out of her contract early, reports Mediaite.com. Brown, who anchors the 8p hour, has agreed to stay until her replacement is found. Previously, Brown had asked CNN to move to an earlier weeknight time slot but the network declined that request.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX and its Saturday night staple of “bad boys” won the A18-49 demo with 1.3/5, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX led at 8p with back-to-back Cops episodes averaging a 1.3/5 while ABC’s movie and CBS’ movie tied for second place at 0.7/3 each. FOX remained steady at #1 through 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.3/5 and CBS’ movie kicked it up a notch to 1.1/4 at #2. NBC’s encore of Law & Order: SVU won the 10p hour at 1.2/4 though was only a tenth of a rating point ahead of CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery at 1.1/4.

FOX’s season finale of House at 8p topped with a 4.3/12 and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars waltzed into second place with a 3.8/10. At 9p, CBS’ comedies Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory averaged a 4.9/13 to secure #1 while the combo of Dancing with the Stars and Romantically Challenged on ABC averaged a 3.2/8 at #2. CBS closed the night a winner through 10p with CSI: Miami at 2.9/8 followed by the  last chapter of the season for ABC’s Castle at 2.4/7.

Island Def Jam Music Group named Jon Vanhala in the newly-created position as SVP/Digital and New Business Development. Jon will supervise the company’s digital strategy, e-commerce, digital marketing and new business efforts. Based in New York, Jon reports to Steve Bartels, President/COO.

Caroline Lang advances to SVP/Managing Director, France with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution (WBITD). Previously, Caroline was VP/Managing Director and in her new capacity she will continue to head the company’s television distribution operations in France where she manages the licensing of television series, theatrical feature films, movies for television and animation to free and pay TV operators via terrestrial, cable, satellite and IPTV platforms. Caroline will furthermore be involved with the company’s Branded Services group working to maintain and launch new SVOD services in France. Based in Paris, Caroline continues to report to Jose Abad, SVP/Managing Director, Southern Europe, WBITD.
