On the day before its Upfront, CBS canceled frosh spinoff drama series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and at the same time renewed CSI: NY for an eighth season. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior debuted in midseason and for its last airing on May 11, posted a 2.1 rating among A18-49 and 9.3 million total viewers, below the average of the original Criminal Minds series.
The CW hosts its Upfront event on Thursday and already has signed on new three dramas for the upcoming season:
- The Secret Circle – Based on the three-book series by L.J. Smith, the plot is about a young woman (Britt Robertson) who moves to a new town where she discovers she is a witch and the catalyst for a centuries-old battle between good and evil. Produced by Alloy.
- Hart of Dixie – A young New York doctor (Rachel Bilson) inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town inhabited by eccentrics.
- Ringer – Sarah Michelle Gellar helms this drama about a woman on the run from the mob who hides by taking on the life of her twin sister. Ioan Gruffud and Kristoffer Polaha co-star; ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios are producing.
Further 2011-2012 season news from The CW is a renewal of One Tree Hill and frosh spy drama Nikita. The network also released the college cheerleading frosh drama Hellcats off its schedule.
Season three of Celebrity Ghost Stories premieres June 18 at 9p on BIO Channel featuring first-person narrative stories from celebrities such as Regis Philbin, Harry Hamlin, Ana Gasteyer, Jaime King and Jerry Stiller among many others. Following at 10p, BIO launches new series Celebrity Close Calls where noted celebrities relate true stories of events that almost ended in death. During the first season Jewel, Ice-T, Jermaine Jackson, Niki Taylor and Gary Busey as well as others tell their near-death stories. Both Celebrity Ghost Stories and Celebrity Close Calls are produced by Jarrett Creative Group for BIO Channel.
Next Monday, Discovery Fit & Health scheduled the US premiere of World’s Worst Teens at 10p. The one-hour, five-episode series profiles different families struggling with teenagers who have overwhelming problems. Behavioral expert Lorrine Marer offers her direct approach to help these families. World’s Worst Teens is produced by talkbackTHAMES.
The Weather Channel (TWC) reacted to this week’s rainy weather forecast in New York City, the site of the annual Upfronts. In the midst of the torrential rains, TWC kept many advertising agency buyers covered by doing a large “umbrella drop” at several major advertising agencies.
Bravo’s season debut of The Real Housewives of New Jersey on Monday scored the highest rated season premiere in the network’s history by delivering 2.02 million A18-49 and the highest rated season opener in the Housewives franchise with 2.87 million total viewers.
French broadcast and broadband technical service provider, Cognacq-Jay Image acquired Spanish company BeBanjo a developer of back-office software to manage non-linear television services. Combining their assets, the merged companies will offer a complete digital media solution for linear and non-linear platforms.
Paul Lee, President/ABC Entertainment Group ushered in ABC’s schedule for the 2011-2012 season at their presentation yesterday afternoon at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.

ABC’s new fall and midseason drama series:
- Charlie’s Angels – Revamped series based on the 1970s ABC hit; new version set in Miami where three attractive detectives solve cases for their mysterious boss, Charlie. Series stars Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor and the “angels” with Ramon Rodriguez as Bosley. Produced by Millar/Gough Ink, Flower Films and Panda Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
- Good Christian Belles – Soap set in Dallas about Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb), the former “mean girl” in high school who is forced to return home in disgrace after her marriage ends in scandal. Also stars Kristen Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, Marisol Nichols, Brad Beyer, Mark Deklin and David James Elliott. ABC Studios is producing.
- Missing – Ashley Judd stars as Becca Winstone who learns her son disappeared while studying abroad and she races against time when she travels to Europe to find him. Becca has a secret of her own – she’s a former CIA Agent and must now rely on old friends to help her discover what’s happened to her son. Produced by Stillking Films.
- Once Upon a Time – From Lost executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, comes this drama where fairy tales collide with the modern world. The plot centers on Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) who is found by her son she gave up ten years prior. The son thinks Emma comes from an alternative world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter. Ginnifer Goodwin stars as Snow White/Sister Mary Margaret; Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold; Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen/Regina among other cast members. Produced by ABC Studios.
- Pan Am – Period drama set in the 1960s about the stewardesses and pilots working for the legendary airline Pan Am. The drama is focused on the romantic and glamorous entanglements of the crew. Christina Ricci stars. Produced by Jack Orman Productions, Out of the Blue Entertainment and Shoe Money Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
- Revenge – Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) moved to the Hamptons on her own and seemingly blends in with her wealthy neighbors though she has returned to right wrongs done to her family. Produced by ABC Studios.
- The River – After the famed explorer/TV personality Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) goes missing in the depths of the Amazon, a search party consisting of his friends, family and crew set out on a mysterious and deadly journey to find him. From ABC Studios.
- Scandal – A Shonda Rhimes drama about the life and work of a professional crisis manager and her eccentric staff. Kerry Washington leads the cast as PR guru Olivia Pope. Produced by ABC Studios.
ABC approved five new comedy series for this fall and midseason:
- Apartment 23 – A naive Midwestern girl comes to the Big Apple and finds herself living with a vivacious roommate who has the morals of a pirate. Dreama Walker, Krysten Ritter and James Van Der Beek star in this comedy from 20th Century Fox Television.
- Last Man Standing – Tim Allen is back on ABC in a new comedy about a man’s man trying to get men back to their rightful place in a female-dominated world. 20th Century Fox Television is producing.
- Man Up – Three modern guys try to get in touch with their inner tough personas to redefine what it means to be a “real man” today. ABC Studios produces.
- Suburgatory – Teenager Tessa is horrified when her single father George moves her from exciting New York City to the suburbs filled with overly-manicured lawns and plastic Franken-moms. Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy star. Produced by Warner Bros. Television.
- Work It – Two unpleasant and unemployed guys dress up as women to land jobs as pharmaceutical reps. Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco star in the comedy produced by Bonanza Productions, Inc. in association with Summer School Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
ABC is returning a slew of series including the dramas: Body of Proof starring Dana Delany; Castle helmed by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic; Desperate Housewives with a cast led by Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria and Vanessa Williams among others; as well as Shonda Rhimes’ two medical dramas Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. ABC’s returning comedies consist of Cougar Town starring Courteney Cox; Happy Endings; The Middle starring Patricia Heaton; and Modern Family. ABC’s returning alternative series include America’s Funniest Home Videos; The Bachelor; Dancing with the Stars; Extreme Makeover: Home Edition; Secret Millionaire; Shark Tank; and 20/20.
Telemundo Communications Group presented its programming lineup for the 2011-2012 season consisting of four new telenovelas and new initiatives addressing the growing Hispanic population in the US based on the 2010 Census.
Telemundo’s new 2011-2012 programming of Monday-Friday Primetime Telenovelas includes:
- Amor de Pelicula (Love . . . Just Like in the Movies) – Rocio and Luis, from different backgrounds share a passion for movies though they must fight to overcome challenges from jealous old loves and new rivals.
- Caidas del Cielo (Fallen from Heaven) – Childhood friends Angeles, Agata and Samantha guard the lives of others as bodyguards while trying to find love in their own lives.
- Fisico o Quimica (Physical or Chemistry) – Spanish series adapted by Telemundo specifically for the US Hispanic audience is set inside an urban high school with storylines about parents, students and teachers centered on love, loss, conflict and heartache.
- Una Maid en Manhattan (Maid in Manhattan) – Antonia and Michael, two people from different worlds, are brought together by a chance encounter and a case of mistaken identity.
Other new programming and development projects at Telemundo:
- Cristina Saralegui – Emmy Award-winning media personality Cristina Saralegui joins the network to develop, host and executive produce a weekend variety show which will premiere later this year.
- Telemundo and Billboard forged a new multi-year agreement to continue the Latin music franchise, the Billboard Latin Music Awards. The deal now includes Premios Billboard de la Musica Regional Mexicana, the network’s first musical awards show exclusively highlighting Regional Mexican music.
- The Shift – Telemundo and sister network mun2 are introducing The Shift, a concept to describe the current cultural demographic and psychographic shift in the US affecting audience and buying influence.
Telemundo’s 2011-2012 programming also includes programs in daytime, news, sports and weekend:
- Caso Cerrado (Case Closed) – Daytime court show presided by attorney, Dra. Ana Maria Polo.
- 12 Corazones (12 Hearts) – Returning dating game shows hosted by Penelope Menchaca.
- Al Rojo Vivo – Weekday newsmagazine offers news updates and special interest segments covering entertainment, fashion, movie/DVD reviews, health, sports, immigration and eco-news.
- Noticiero Telemundo – Evening news program anchored by veteran journalist Jose Diaz-Balart.
- Levantate – Show broadcasting live from Miami, features local and network news cut-ins via satellite offering the latest information from four major Hispanic markets: New York, Mexico, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico.
- Rumbo al Mundial – Telemundo is the official broadcast home of the Mexican National Soccer Team’s away games.
- Futbol Liga Mexicana – Offering coverage of Mexican League soccer games.
- Titulares Telemundo – Live half-hour sports magazine show.
- Titulares y Mas – Presents an irreverent view of sports news.
- Boxeo Telemundo – Hi-def boxing show.
- Ritmo Deportivo – Weekly show covering extreme sports shot on location in hi-def.
- Enfoque – The network’s Sunday morning public affairs program hosted by Jose Diaz-Balart.
- Descontrol – One-hour Saturday entertainment show highlighting the West Coast music scene.
- Nitido – Entertainment magazine show highlighting Latin stars, sights and sounds hosted by Natalia Villaveces.
- Cine Millonario – Showcase of action, drama, comedy and family movies from Hollywood, Mexico and Latin America.
Telemundo’s mun2 participated in the Upfronts yesterday in New York emphasizing their targeted audience of younger Latino Americans age 18-34. mun2 announced the production of two new series:
- RPM 2 – Spurred by the recent success of the premiere of RPM Miami, mun2 is moving forward with the second season of this bilingual dramatic series about young Latinos involving culture identity, cars, music, racing, corruption and complicated love. The series is a co-production from mun2 and Telemundo Studios.
- El Mas Ching*n – A new talent competition reality series ready to discover the next Regional Mexican artist featuring celebrity judges.
UPFRONT 2011: FOX HISPANIC MEDIA
At New York’s Public Library yesterday, Fox Hispanic Media (FHM) revealed programming and initiatives emanating from its three Spanish-language networks: FOX Deportes, Utilisima and Nat Geo Mundo. FHM also touted its tagline: “Latin Entertainment – American Attitude.”
FOX Deportes – Hispanic sports network offers exclusive live sporting events for multicultural and multigenerational Latinos under the tagline “Con Garra” – or “Do, or Die” or “Live to Win.”
- Each year, FOX Deportes will program 1400 hours of soccer matches.
- In first quarter this year, the network launched three original news and talk shows aiming at the US Latino sports fans: Cronica, news show airing seven days a week; Cronica +, offering weekend sports news; and Sin Codigos, a talk show focused on soccer airing seven days a week.
Nat Geo Mundo – Network officially launches July 1, 2011 in 4 million homes with the tagline: “Asi Miro Mi Mundo” or “How I See My World.” Nat Geo Mundo’s programming is a mixture of never-before-seen shows from the National Geographic Channel in Latin America and newly commissioned and acquired original series and specials. Some program titles include Out of This Mundo: Originals; Nat Geo Planet; The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan; Mega Structures; and the original factual series Tabu.
Utilisima – Launched in July 2010 and targets women 25 and older offering 24 hours of Spanish lifestyle programming covering food, arts and crafts, home improvement, health and beauty and parenting. This year, the network is developing several original shows for women, including programming featuring celebrity chefs Aaron Sanchez and Aquiles Chavez.
GolTV made a multi-year deal with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the exclusive media rights to UEFA’s Youth, Women and Futsal competitions in Canada and the US. GolTV will air these competitions through 2013 which began on the network May 12 with the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the tournament’s final on May 15. Future 2011 tournament dates include: UEFA Women’s Champions League Final on May 26; UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship May 30 to June 11; UEFA European Under-19 Championship July 20 to August 1; and UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship July 28 to July 31.
Soon after receiving word House was renewed on FOX for an eighth season, Lisa Edelstein opted to not return to the series, ending her role at the end of the current seventh season when her contract expires.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: ABC was the winner Saturday night, posting a 1.4/5 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, baseball on FOX fielded a win at 1.1/4 with ABC’s movie a step behind at 1.0/4. ABC moved ahead of the competition during 9p with a 1.6/5 for its movie followed by more baseball on FOX at 1.2/4. ABC won again through 10p with the last hour of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End at 1.7/5 and this time, CBS made it to #2 with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.4/4.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis: CBS outlasted the competition Sunday night posting a 3.3/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s stalwart America’s Funniest Home Videos did best at 7p with a 1.8/6 with CBS’ 60 Minutes a tad behind at 1.7/5. CBS was #1 at 8p with the Survivor: Redemption Island Finale at 3.9/10 while FOX’s sitcoms The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers averaged a 2.4/7 in second place. At 9p, the second hour of Survivor: Redemption Island Finale on CBS surged to a 4.2/10 with the two-hour Desperate Housewives on ABC following with a 3.0/7. Opening primetime at 8p, the weekly installment of Dancing with the Stars on ABC was upbeat in first place at 4.0/12 and FOX’s House followed at 3.5/10. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in its second hour continued to dominate during 9p at 5.2/13 while the CBS sitcoms Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly averaged a #2 with 2.3/6.
