ABCannounced the addition of 14 new shows to its established slate of programming at a spangly Upfront presentation at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York, featuring the entire GMA ensemble, the retiring Barbara Walters, Rebel Wilson, Diane Sawyer, Kerry Washington, Joss Whedon, and Jimmy Kimmel. A tie-free Disney CEO Bob Iger watched while ABC/Disney Television Group President Anne Sweeney, (“ABC has never been a traditional company” she said), President of Sales Geri Wang, and Entertainment Group President Paul Lee talked about ABC’s continual innovation, as they unveiled the network’s new series and specials.

  • Lovers find themselves in an impossible situation — on opposite sides of a murder investigation in Betrayal (produced by ABC Studios).
  • Killer Women (produced by ABC Studios) centers on Molly Parker, the only female ranger in an elite squad of Texas lawmen who patrol the violent frontier. 
  • Lucky 7 (produced by ABC Studios and Amblin Television) follows a group of seven New York gas station employees who have been chipping into a lottery pool for months, never thinking they’d actually win.
  • Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films in Joss Whedon’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television).
  • Mind Games (a 20th Century Fox Television production) centers on Clark and Ross, brothers and partners in a unique agency committed to solving clients’ problems using psychological manipulation.
  • In Victorian England, the young Alice tells a tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (by ABC Studios).
  • The people of Arcadia, Missouri are forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly start to return in Resurrection (by ABC Studios).
  • The Goldbergs (from Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, and produced by Sony Pictures Television) tells the story of 11-year-old Adam, who captures the crazy of his ’80s family via a video camera.
  • Mixology (by ABC Studios) focuses on singles at Union, a high-end bar in Manhattan’s trendy meat-packing district.
  • Super Fun Night (produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Conaco and Warner Bros. Television) centers on three gal pals, (one of whom is played by Rebel Wilson), who have had a standing date, Friday Night Fun Night, for the last 13 years.
  • Reformed party girl Kate (Malin Ackerman) becomes Pete’s third wife, complete with three stepchildren and two ex-wives, in Trophy Wife (from ABC Studios).
  • New reality adventure The Quest takes 12 lucky contestants on the journey of a lifetime when they enter the world of Everealm.
  • Toy Story of Terror, a special from Disney Pixar, is a spooky new tale featuring all the favorite characters from the Toy Story films.


ESPN
presented its upcoming lineup of series and specials at its Upfront at Best Buy Theater in New York’s Times Square. The lines of buyers and planners waiting to have their pictures taken with the likes of Colin Kaepernick, Mariano Rivera, Victor Cruz, and Landon Donovan snaked around the lobby as soon as the presentation wrapped. Here are some of the highlights.

  • A new slate of 30 for 30 film series returns on October 1. The fall schedule will include the documentaries Big Shot, about con man John Spano’s attempt to buy the New York Islanders; Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau, about the famous surfing icon; and No Mas, about Roberto Duran and his rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard.
  • The network will debut NFL Insiders, a new one-hour weekday pro football-themed show, in time for the 2013 season.
  • The launch of ESPN’s first daily, highlights-driven, soccer studio program in the US (Sundays- Fridays) on Aug.11.

Discovery U.S. Hispanic unveiled its 2013-2014 Upfront slate, yesterday in New York. “Based on our proven success, we are strengthening our programming slate with new series based on our viewers’ well-known passions and preferences, along with returning favorites that support our traditional quality content,” said Ivan Bargueiras, General Manager, Discovery U.S. Hispanic’s networks. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

  • Discovery en Espanol presents a mix of edgy programs from adrenaline stories, like Hombre en la mira (Manhunt), a series that challenges an experienced Special Operations warrior to survive, evade, resist, and escape in a foreign land; to real life dramas like La verdad increible (The Unbelievable Truth), a show that takes viewers across the globe to meet India’s child snake charmers and Britain’s vampire brothers.
  • Un bebe por minuto (One Born Every Minute), from Discovery Familia, takes a look at the drama and emotion of a maternity unit, from the perspective of the parents-to-be and the maternity ward staff.
  • Limpieza obsesiva Limpieza obsesiva (Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners), another entry from Discovery Familia, takes a look at a group of people who wage a constant war on dirt and order.
  • On the beauty front, Discovery Familia presents Coseme, estirame, emparejame! (Stitch me, Lift me, Tuck me), a documentary that exposes life behind the doors of one of the most exclusive cosmetic surgery clinics, Harley Street Skin, revealing the intimate workings of this multi-million dollar business. 

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Downton Abbey season four has set an official premiere date. The series will begin on Masterpiece on PBS on Sunday, January 5, 2014. The highest-rated drama in PBS history will run for eight weeks through February 23, 2014. Casting news for season 4 includes the return of Shirley MacLaine as Martha Levinson and several new actors, including Tom Cullen, Nigel Harman, Dame Harriet Walter, Joanna David, Julian Ovenden, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Gary Carr.  Downton Abbey is a Carnival/Masterpiece Co-Production.

After eight years, Saturday Night Live regular Bill Hader is leaving the late night comedy. Hader will make his final appearance on the season finale airing May 18.

History‘s Pawn Stars is back with an all new season, on a new night. The show is moving to Thursday nights at 9p beginning May 30. Viewers will see the Pawn Stars haggle over a slew of interesting historic items this season – from a guitar believed to be signed by Paul McCartney and items signed by all four of The Beatles to a reproduction of the Back to the Future DeLorean car. Included in the new night is a brand new original theme song performed by legendary rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band recorded a custom song for the show titled Winning Isn’t Everything. A shortened version of the song will accompany the Pawn Stars show opening beginning on May 30.

MTV is unleashing more girl power. On Tuesday, June 4 at 11p, The Alectrix will showcase an all-girl pop music group seeking a fresh start under the guidance of music mogul, Joe Simpson. The six-episode series follows Heather Naylor, the leader of the group, as she and her group mates strive for their big break in the music industry and finally fulfill their dreams of superstardom. Later this fall, the network will debut the new series South of Heaven [wt] about a group of fun loving girlfriends who work at the best little honky tonk bar in Texas.

Maury celebrates its 2,500th episode on Friday, May 17 (check local listings) with a special show. Some of the biggest names in news, entertainment and sports will join the talk show host to celebrate, including Barbara Walters, Shaquille O’Neal, Katie Couric, Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, NeNe Leakes, Steve Harvey, Wendy Williams, former all-star quarterback for the Washington Redskins Joe Theismann and Jerry Springer. In addition, Maury’s wife Connie Chung gives him the surprise of a lifetime, when she jumps out of a cake in celebration of this milestone episode.

HBO has ordered eight episodes of a gay themed dramedy starring Jonathan Groff. The project centers on three friends living in San Francisco who explore the fun and options available to a new generation of gay men. Production will begin in the fall in San Francisco for a 2014 premiere.

FOX is teaming with Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Street) to develop a drama about Billy the Kid. The limited-run series would tell the origin story of the notorious Old West outlaw hails from by Halfire-CORE Entertainment and the Levinson/Fontana Co. Barry Levinson is on board to exec produce.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

FremantleMedia heads into this year’s LA Screenings having inked a number of new sales and with an exciting slate of finished programs and innovative formats for U.S. and Latin American buyers. Jamie Oliver is on the menu as Mundo Fox orders Jamie’s Great Italian Escape, Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals, Jamie’s Road Trip (seasons one and two), Jamie Oliver At Home, Jamie’s Kitchen and Jamie’s Food Fight for the U.S. Hispanic market. The latter has also been sold to FOX Life for Latin America and Globosat in Brazil. In addition, Auction Hunters joining the TruTV line up later this year. Rounding out sales are the U.S. version of Hole In The Wall, the global TV format sensation that began in Japan, and Bindi’s Bootcamp, both heading to Televisa Cable.

WWEand Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment, a leading distributor of entertainment and lifestyle media, have announced a multi-year extension for home video distribution of WWE programming. The new agreement will continue to give GVE distribution rights to release 12 WWE pay-per-view events each year, including WrestleMania and SummerSlam, as well as a catalog of collectible titles throughout the U.S. on physical and digital platforms. GVE has also extended its home entertainment distribution agreement with Televisa. As part of the multi-year deal, GVE will continue to distribute top-rated Univision telenovelas such as Amorcito Corazon, Por Ella Soy Eva and Abismo de Pasion and family friendly programming like El Chavo Animado.

  

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Oscar and Tony Award-winning actor Joel Grey has been tapped to guest star on the Monday, May 20 episode of Syfy‘s Warehouse 13, premiering at 10p. Grey will play Las Vegas lounge act magician Monty the Magnificent. Also guest starring on the episode are Steve Valentine (Crossing Jordan) as Val Preston, a headliner in desperate need of something new to spice up his own act, and Kelly Hu as Abigail Cho, a protege of Mrs. Frederic.

~ INTERNATIONAL NEWS ~

Sony Pictures Television and Teleset have announced that they will produce an original series adaptation of the hit U.S. drama Breaking Bad for Latin American audiences. Metastasis is the first adaptation of the award-winning series by SPT. The show has been cleared in most major Spanish speaking markets including Univision’s UniMas in the U.S. Metastasis follows the story of an unassuming chemistry teacher who is given a fatal diagnosis and enters a world of drugs and crime, where he ascends to power.

Echo Bridge Entertainment has named Camilo Bernal as Vice President, New Media, US Hispanic and International, effective immediately. Bernal, formerly Senior Vice President of Global Distribution at Cedal Entertainment Production, will be responsible for all New Media business development functions and the planning, deployment, and management in the multi-platform expansion of Echo Bridge Digital Media initiatives in the US Hispanic market and worldwide.
 
Island Def Jam Music Group has promoted Shawn “Pecas” Costner to Executive Vice President, Def Jam Recordings. In his new post, Pecas will help lock in and coordinate all frontline activities for the Def Jam label and help connect artists with their plans of release, nurture new signings and direct the label forward into new platforms.
