CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

05/12/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 12, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

PAX TV announced several upcoming shows at its network upfront presentation for buyers and press last evening in NYC. In the words of Keith Turner, Pax is evolving into a “destination for viewers and advertisers to get programming free of sex and violence.” To accomplish that, PAX has a three pronged approach – focus in on the development of its own original programming; help viewers learn that family friendly doesn’t have to mean boring; and broaden the network’s overall appeal. With that came the announcement of several new primetime series and an addition to the net’s prime access game show block wtih the syndicated series Pyramid with Donny Osmond.
Primetime Additions:

  • On the Cover:  8pm M-F beginning May 18, with host Marc Wahlberg (Temptation Island).  You’ve heard about this one before – a game show testing contestants pop culture knowledge.
  • Balderdash:  830p M-F beginning in July 12, is based on the popular board game.
  • Model Citizens: Mondays at 9p/Wed at 10p. This show casts a half dozen models and sends them to Smalltown USA where they have five days to complete a community project such as putting a new roof on a building or building a new walkway, and all the while without any model-like pampering.
  • Second Verdict: Tuesdays at 9p.  Show a group of people, let’s call them a Jury, footage from an actual trial and let them arrive at their own judgment and then compare their decision against the actual jury’s.
  • World Cup Comedy: Wednesdays at 9p/Mondays at 10p. From exec prod Kelsey Grammer this show is part Whose Line and part America’s Funniest Comedian – two teams of comedians compete in various improvisational skits and the winning team goes on to battle the next team
  • Cold Turkey: Thursdays at 9p.  Of all the shows presented, this one got the best and biggest reaction by the upfront crowd.  Bamboozle a group of six people into a house using whatever pretext required; and then keep them there for a period of about one month with the specific goal of getting them to quit smoking.  A cash incentive is used, as well as peer pressure and letters from concerned loved ones.  The trick here – none of them had any intention of quitting smoking, and some are a little annoyed they have found themselves in this house.  Hosted by AJ Benza and exec prod by Stuart Krasnow (Average Joe, etc).
  • Friday night is still the MGM movie; and adding to that movie library is the Universal Library which will have its own showcase on Saturday nights.  Other scripted fare is coming midseason, and there is also the return of Doc and Sue Thomas F.B.Eye.

BBC America has acquired up the cable rights to three series from Carlton International – The Saint, The Prisoner and The Persuaders.  All three will begin airing on July 9.

Continuing with their pre-upfront buzz machine – the WB has announced it will pick up The Mountain (Wonderland Sound & Vision/Warner Bros. Television)  for next fall starring Oliver Hudson and Barbara Hershey.  The story is about a young man who inherits the family ski resort when his grandfather dies.

ABC projections:

  • New series receiving orders:  Empire (8 eps), I’m a Rich Kid, Get Me Outta Here (10 eps), Untitled Practice Series
  • Renewals for Next Season:  Alias, Life with bonnie
  • Returning this summer: Drew Carey, Life of Luxury
  • New shows expected this summer:  The Benefactor, The Days, Deal or No Deal, The Swap, The Two-Timer, What Happens in Cabo

Lifetime Television has acquired the cable rights to 20th’s off-net comedy series Reba to start in August 2006. Reba first ran in October 2001 on WB.  It will join the current The Golden Girls and The Nanny syndications with Will & Grace slated for the 2005 fall lineup and Frasier for the 2006 season.  Twentieth Television will distribute Reba to broadcast stations for their off-net syndication beginning in 2006.

Nielsen Media Research announced yesterday that the company would agree to an independent review of the controversial Local People Meters data after The Don’t Count Us Out Coalition raised protests.  However, Nielsen pointed out that the company’s ratings are already audited by the Media Rating Council.  The Council was formed in the 1960s with the Justice Department’s blessings as a group of ratings company clients joining forces to independently audit rating company results and determine their accuracy.  Senior Nielsen spokesperson, Jack Loftus, recommended contacting the Council companies to see if they would agree to finance the audit.  If so, Nielsen would cooperate.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1985 – Philadelphia Police evacuate local residents in preparation for a massive operation against MOVE, a radical group with a history of speaking out against police brutality. The following day, the police drop a bomb on the MOVE headquarters, killing six adults and five children and destroying an entire block of Philadelphia homes. In 1996, the former mayor and two former city officials are ordered to pay $1.5 million in damages.

Today’s Trivia Question:
You’ve never seen her, though you know all about her.  One actor recently joked she would be getting her own show – only nobody would be able to see it.  She is described as “best kept in an air tight container” and “100% fat free” with “ferret eyes and disturbing hair.”  Who is this wonderous lady? (click here to respond to the trivia question and please be sure to include with your answer your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four correct responses from each time zone will be listed in tomorrow’s kudo list.)
