CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/09/05

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 9, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Voom saga continues.  Charles Dolan, Chairman/Founder of Cablevision Systems Corp., wants to keep Voom up and going; while son James Dolan, Cablevision CEO, voted to shutter the money-losing satellite venture.  Yesterday, Cablevision released a statement that it will work with Charles Dolan to separate Voom from Cablevision, and that Charles has agreed to fund any Voom costs while he works to identify and assemble a group of investors to keep the service up and running. The deadline to “arrange an alternate transaction” for the service is March 31.  Voom launched in 2003 and as of today has just 46,000 subscribers. In 2004, Voom lost $661 million, and is on track to lose another $400 million this year if it continues as is. Voom’s satellite was sold to Echostar for $200 million in January.  Charles Dolan has been negotiations with Cablevision and his son Tom Dolan to buy the remaining Voom assets, and when they were not able to come to terms by the Monday deadline, Cablevision announced it would shut down the service.  The Board consists of 15 members, five were newly appointed by Charles last week, replacing three others who voted against him to close Voom. What will happen as of March 31 if Charles Dolan is not able to put together his needed investors, is anybody’s guess.

If you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber in Metro NY, you may have noticed the crawl on Fox Sports Net NY:  “We are not permitted to carry Fox Sports New York at this time. We are substituting College Sports Television until a new agreement is reached.”  Time Warner also pulled MSG Network. Both networks are owned by Cablevision.  At the center of the dispute are the fees Cablevision wants Time Warner to pay to carry the sports networks, and a rate reduction plan Time Warner wants in the event Cablevision loses any of their sports franchises, i.e, The NY Mets who are looking to build their own network with Comcast next year. Cablevision has proposed they both meet with a neutral mediator in binding arbitration to hammer out their differences and reach an agreement. Time Warner has declined saying in a statement: “Binding arbitration has proven to be the fuel contributing to the skyrocketing costs of professional sports.” Time Warner has also provided a look-see at NBA TV along with CSTV.

Tonight’s Finale:
CBS:     CBS Evening News with Dan Rather – tonight’s is Dan’s last night at the anchor desk, his 24th anniversary in the chair he took over from Walter Cronkite.

Fox has pulled Jonny Zero from the Friday night 9pm time period and will replace it with repeats of That 70’s Show, at least for the next two weeks. The NAACP awards air on March 25.  The immediate pull of the show leaves five unseen eps on the shelf.

WB will move The Starlet to Tuesdays at 9p thru and including April 5, at which time One Tree Hill returns to the schedule. The show premiered last Sunday night, its intended permanent time period, with a very soft 0.7/2 A18-49 and a 0.8/2 among Teens.  Filling in the Sunday 8p time period will be a second run of Charmed, until April 10 when new Charmed eps are scheduled to kick in at 8p.

Sylvester Stallone will soon to be heard in Spanish following Telemundo‘s new agreement with NBC and the Rocky star to air The Contender.  A Spanish-language dubbed version of the reality show is set to debut this coming weekend on March 12 at 7p. Subsequent segments will air on Saturdays at 8 pm.  In addition to 12 other boxing contestants, 4 Hispanic boxers are participating in the Mark Burnett Productions, DreamWorks Television and Rogue Marble joint production.  Sugar Ray Leonard and Sylvester will be involved as mentors and hosts.

A&E Network launched its new series Intervention last Sunday night at 10p and delivered 988,000 A18-49 and 515,000 A18-34, making it A&E’s #1 Sunday night original series of all time.  In total viewers, the show averaged 1.6 million, with 1.0 million A25-54 impressions.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

CBS:

  • The Commuters (Paramount Network TV) has added Johnathan Schaech and Christine Taylor, to a lineup that already includes David Arquette and Jeri Ryan.  The Commuters is about three couples who live in the suburbs and commute by train every day into the city.

  • The Unit (20th) has added Scott Foley to the cast, which previously announced Regina King has been signed. The Unit is a drama pilot about the lives of the people and families in a Special Ops unit

FOX:

  • Ticket to Ride has been retitled to Windfall (Regency TV), and recently joining the cast is Sarah Wynter.  The project is about a large group of people who share a winning lottery ticket valued at $386 million.  Other cast members include Luke Perry and Jason Gedrick.
  • Pool Guys (Regency Television) signed Jonathan Sadowski and Jake Sandvig to star. This comedy project from writers/exec prod Jennifer Konner and Alexandra Rushfield, is described as Laverne & Shirley with Dudes. That is a pair of young guys who share an apartment and clean pools for a living, also share the ultimate dream of someday cleaning the pool at the Playboy Mansion.
  • Murder Book (20th) has added Nester Serrano to the lineup of Josh Brolin and Paula Patton.

NBC:

  • Notorious (NBC Universal) brings Loni Anderson back to the small screen, not as the blonde bombshell of yore, but as Tori Spelling’s mother in the NBC pilot .  The story is semi-autobiographical for Spelling about her days immediately following BH 90210.
  • Idris Elba joins Vinessa Shaw in World of Trouble (NBC Universal TV Studio) about an elite government agency that investigates crimes against Americans both at home and on foreign soils.

UPN:

  • Crazy (Spelling TV) has cast Lindsay Sloane to join Lara Flynn Boyle.  Crazy is about a psychiatrist (Boyle) who begins to see her patient’s problems and issues in her own life. Other cast members include Kristin Bauer and David Julian Hirsh.

WB:

  • Halley’s Comet (20th/David E. Kelley Prods) drama pilot about a lifelong medical patient turned now working to become a doctor (played by Audrey Marie Anderson) has added Lucas Grabeel, as Halley’s younger brother.  Other cast members include Adam Campbell, Adam LaVorgna, Marika Dominczyk and Sean Maher.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Jay Leno‘s motion to relieve the gag order imposed on his by the Michael Jackson trial judge is expected to be heard today.  Leno is on the witness list, so for the moment he’s not permitted to discuss the case, and for Jay, that means no jokes.  Last night during his monologue he began talking about the Jackson case, suddenly stopped, informed the audience he wasn’t allowed to go there.  That’s when Dennis Miller stepped in and told a handful of Jackson jokes.  When he was done, Leno completed his monologue.  If the gag order is not lifted in court today, Roseanne Barr is on tap to tell the Jackson jokes for tonight’s show.  Brilliant.
