Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 8, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has inked a video distribution deal with Cingular Wireless, which launched its Cingular Video on-demand streaming video service yesterday in 16 US cities.  Under the deal TBS, Inc. will provide branded video content from CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, NASCAR.COM and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) via Cingular’s Unlimited Data Plan.  NASCAR.COM will be offered as a premium channel.  Among the programming available will be original content from Cartoon Network and its Adult Swim block, and TCM will include movie scenes and clips, movie trailers, cartoons, shorts and behind the scenes footage.  Other content available on Cingular Video includes clips from HBO/HBO Family, NBC, ESPN and CBS Sportsline (NCAA men’s b-ball).

TiVo has partnered with Verizon Wireless to launch TiVo Mobile, roviding Verizon Wireless subscribers the ability to program their TiVo via their mobile phones.  Under the exclusive agreement Verizon wireless users will be able to download the application from Tivo’s Get It Now service onto applicable handsets beginning summer 2006.  TiVo subscribers will also able to access related entertainment through the arrangement.  The two companies will launch a joint promotional marketing campaign.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Audiences will get a sneak peek at Pixar’s upcoming CG-animated feature Cars tomorrow with the World Premiere of the new movie trailer across Disney-affiliated broadcast and cable TV outlets, theme parks and resorts worldwide, and Disney Stores in the US and Canada, and on the ABC SuperSign in NYC’s Times Square.  Additionally, tomorrow night the eight ESPN Zones will debut the trailer at 8p.  The trailer will also bow across Starz Entertainment Group channels, and online across the AOL Network.  Cars opens wide June 9, 2006.

At Nickelodeon’s ad sales upfront presentation this Thursday the network will announce its new slate of TV series, and expected to part of that pack are the animated series Tak the Power of Juju (15 x 30 min) and El Tigre (13 x 30 min), according to Variety.  Tak is based on the video game title of the same name from THQ and Nickelodeon.  El Tigre follows Manny Rivera who idolizes hi father and grandfather, one former a superhero and the latter a villain.

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Charlie Cox and Sienna Miller have joined the cast of the movie Stardust, based on Neil Gaiman’s young adult novel.  Matthew Vaughn will direct and produce the film, which he adapted for the screen with writing partner Jane Goldman.  The movie will be co-produced and co-financed by Paramount, Vaughn’s Marv Films and Ingenious Film PartnersLorenzo di Bonaventura will produce the film through his company di Bonaventura Pictures which has a first-look deal at Paramount. Michael Dreyer and Gaiman are also attached as producers. Stephen Marks and Peter Morton as Executive Producers.  Paramount Pictures will handle worldwide distribution on the project that commences filming in the UK and Iceland this April.

MORE KIDS STUFF

G4 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Gene Roddenberry’s creation Star Trek, with the premiere of Star Trek 2.0, the new interactive version of classic Star Trek episodes airing weeknights beginning April 10 at 11p.  In advance of the Star Trek 2.0 episodes, the network will air the Star Trek episodes as they originally aired, in Saturday marathons from 9a-4p, beginning Saturday, April 8.  G4’s interactive Star Trek 2.0 on-screen features include: live chat, where viewers can comment on the episode and interact with each other online; an accumulating tally of Trek Stats (e.g. how many times Spock says “illogical” over an episode/season); and G4’s Spock Market, through which viewers can “buy” and “sell” stock in the characters online.

Production has begun on a new season of the preschool series The Big Comfy Couch (22 new episodes).  The new episodes will focus on encouraging young kids to make healthy food and lifestyle choices and will feature the debut of Ramona Gilmour-Darling as the lead role Loonette.  A Radical Sheep Production, The Big Comfy Couch is produced in Canada and distributed in the US by Amity Entertainment in association with presenting station Nashville Public Television.

Toonacious Family Entertainment has teamed with C&I Partners LLC to fund CG and 2D animated feature films with budgets targeted from $30 – 60 million.  With five animated features already in development, Toonacious will oversee all aspects of production.  Tony Bancroft, Ben Chambers and Bo Ferger founded Toonacious Family Entertainment in 2001, beginning with the direct-to-video title Lenny & Sid.  Since then the company has provided animation for Disney, Mattel, Sony and Hasbro.  C&I Partners LLC is a business development, strategic planning and capital raising services consulting firm.

Launching this week is The Baby Einstein Company’s new DVD/VHS title, Meet the Orchestra: First Instruments.  Targeted to K1+ introduces the audience to the different groups of instruments that make up an orchestra.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nintendo has logged its 1 millionth gamer on its Wi-Fi Connection service for Nintendo DS users.  The big moment took place when a player in Japan, literally logged-on to play Animal Crossing: Wild World.  Two new Wi-Fi-enabled multi-player game titles, Tetris DS and Metroid Prime Hunters, are set to debut in the US on March 20.

STONE SOUP

Comic Book Movies, LLC, has entered into a strategic partnership with George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound for all post production and sound services for their upcoming features films, TV and animated productions.  Formed to create multi-media franchises based on classic comic books, graphic novels and manga properties Comic Book Movies, LLC, was founded by film producer Michael Uslan (the Batman movies) and financier M. Jonathan Roberts.  Under a recent agreement between Ishimori Entertainment Inc., Comic Book Movies, LLC, ITOCHU Corporation, and Lotus Inc. the partners will jointly develop motion picture franchises based on the original properties of the late Shotaro Ishinomori, one of the most famous Manga authors.  Lotus is CBM’s exclusive agent for the procurement and development of existing and original movie content from Japan and Asia. Lotus develops original motion picture content in collaboration with Japanese alliance partners and manages the Japanese distribution rights of motion pictures produced by CBM.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Kaaren Lee Brown has been appointed SVP/Creative Affairs, DIC Entertainment.  Brown will oversee programming and all other aspects on the CBS’s Secret Saturday Morning Slumber Party, the new branded Saturday morning kids programming b lock set to debut on the network fall 2006.  She will also work with the DIC Educational Advisory Board.  Previously, Brown was VP/Licensing, Tyco Industries and she has produced a number of animated TV series including Liberty’s Kids, Strawberry Shortcake, Super Duper Sumos and Action Man among others.

CGI animation company GigaPix Studios has established a new Visual Effects group and named industry veteran Clay Dale to head the group.  Dale has worked on countless live action and CGI TV and movie projects including: Voltron (TV); Dune (Sci-Fi Channel); and movies such as Electra and I, Robot.  Additionally, Greg Pusateri joins GigaPix as Director/Audio.  Previously, Pusateri has toiled on live action and animated projects for companies including Saban Entertainment, West Productions and Warner Bros.
