CMT had its Upfront today at New York’s Times Center, at which it launched its “bolder, louder” direction for the network. CMT is adding four new series, four returning series, a variety of projects in development and a newly-created News & Docs division to its lineup. “We’re interested in opening the apertures in people’s heads about what CMT programming can be. The News & Docs will be like the rest of our programming; wild, rowdy, genuine and real. We’re going to crush it,” said Jayson Dinsmore, EVP, Programming and Development. He went on to categorize what he described as CMT’s “largest initiative to date: the first-time Sunday night (April 21) premiere of Dog and Beth: On the Hunt.” Four new series announced to premiere later this year include an untitled project with Cassadee Pope, winner of Season 3 of The Voice, The Dirty South from Jersey Shore EP, Sally Ann Salsano and 495 Productions; Hillbillies For Hire from Leftfield Productions; and the acquired Series, Cops Reloaded from FOX, an updated best-of compilation of one of television’s longest-running and most successful shows. Senior Vice President, Integrated Marketing Anthony Barton said that “the new programming gives us room to grow our partners and sponsorships. Categories we see opportunity in are autos and packaged goods. Is beer a packaged good?” he joked. Music star Sheryl Crow also performed four songs, including, “If It Makes You Happy.”
Get ready for The Daily Show sans Jon Stewart. The Comedy Central series host is taking a 12-week summer break from the show to make his directorial debut with Rosewater, a screenplay he wrote based on the New York Times best selling memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival. John Oliver, a correspondent on The Daily Show, will step in as guest host for the eight weeks the show plans to produce new episodes.
Afraid of the dark? You’ll need to proceed with caution if you tune in to Investigation Discovery‘s new series Dead of the Night. The show, which premieres on Tuesday, March 12 at 10p, shines light on nighttime crimes where darkness hides predators hungry for a midnight attack. Each episode recounts the dark, deadly deed and the daytime investigation that followed as told through interviews with loved ones and law enforcement.
The new Esquire Network has ordered two new original primetime series. How I Rock It,(wt) from Ryan Seacrest Productions and Citizen Jones and hosted by NBA superstar Baron Davis, is a half-hour, six-part profiles athletes, celebrities, designers, and street-style icons. Risky Listing(wt), a one-hour six-part docuseries from Zodiak New York, goes behind the velvet rope to meet the high-end listings agents who wheel and deal in the competitive world of New York nightlife real estate.
After a successful partnership distributing AMC‘s The Walking Dead, Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced a new deal with AMC’s parent company AMC Networks for home entertainment distribution across the company’s networks, including AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel. The agreement includes future scripted series to be produced in-house by AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel, among them the anticipated Sundance Channel scripted series Rectify and AMC’s recently greenlit original drama series Low Winter Sun. The deal covers all US and Canadian distribution on DVD, Blu-ray and certain transactional digital distribution rights.
Univision’s hit reality beauty competition Nuestra Belleza Latina returns for its seventh season on Sunday, March 10 at 8 p. The A-list celebrity counselors on deck include Fernando Colunga, Eduardo YaZez, Blanca Soto, Mane de la Parra, Carmen Salinas, Angelica Maria, Victoria Ruffo, Arturo Peniche, Jorge Salinas, Pablo Montero and Gabriel Soto.
Alexis Bledel, who played Rory on Gilmore Girls, has signed to co-star opposite Jason Ritter on the Fox sitcom pilot, Friends & Family. The show is based on the British television series Gavin & Stacy and is produced by Sony TV and BBC Worldwide Productions.
British actor Tom Cullen is joining the cast of Downton Abbey. He’s set to play Lord Gillingham, a family friend of the Crawleys who’s known Lady Mary since childhood.
Hart of Dixie‘s Rachel Bilson is getting a new love interest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rob Huebel, who stars on Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital, has booked a guest-starring role on The CW series. He’ll play Michael, the father of Rose’s boyfriend, Max.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has acquired the new reality genre series Boom Town from Knickerbockerglory. Produced by Knickerbockerglory TV for BBC Three in the UK, ITVS GE will launch Boom Town both finished and format at MIPTV to the international marketplace.
