~ MORE STUFF ~

ABC handed an early pick-up for its crime drama Castle for a third season. Castle has increasingly delivered better ratings during this second season with this Monday’s episode posting the most total viewers at 14.5 million and a 3.7/10 rating/share among A18-49.

National Geographic Channel introduces two new series back-to-back on April 11:

  • Explorer: Solitary Confinement – Series goes inside CSP, one of the “Supermax” solitary confinement prisons where 756 inmates are isolated from others for many years. The series will interview wardens, psychologists and inmates about what life in solitary is like. Produced by National Geographic Television, the series will premiere at 9p.
  • Detroit Gang Squad – Series follows a special squad of undercover cops in Detroit as they try to infiltrate and uncover gangs involved in the bus-stop killing of seven students.  Produced by Hoggard Films for Nat Geo, this series will debut at 10p.

MTV brings back a new season of The Challenge: Fresh Meat II opening April 7 at 10p. Shot in Vancouver, thirteen rookies and thirteen veterans pair off to compete in nine challenges and a finale with a prize of $300,000 at stake. Prior to the series premiere, MTV will air The Challenge: Meet The Meat Special this Thursday at 12 midnight.

Malcolm Poindexter, 84, a former reporter with KYW/Philadelphia (CBS 3), the CBS affiliate owned by CBS Television Stations, died Tuesday. Malcolm’s distinguished career in journalism spanned more than 50 years encompassing newspapers, radio and television and he earned four Emmy Awards. he retired from CBS 3 in February 2001. Malcolm is survived by his wife, Ilse; sons, David and Malcolm III; daughter, Lynne and stepdaughter, Kirsten. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

UPFRONT 2010: WE tv

WE tv unveiled its programming slate for the 2010-2011 season including six new original series, described generally by John Miller, SVP/Original Production & Development as shows that portray the lifestages of a woman with great stories, good conflict and are positive but not overly earnest:

  • Girl Meets Gown – Reality series showcases two busy and popular bridal boutiques in the Dallas area: Stardust Celebrations in Dallas and The Stardust Salon in Plano. Produced by WE tv and AMSs. Six one-hour episodes premiere April 25 at 10p.
  • Sunset Daze – Learning that WE tv’s Golden Girls off-net series has an average viewer age of 34 gave the network cause to develop this new reality series.  The show follows a group of 60+ men and women who live in Surprise Arizona’s Sun City, a large retirement community described as Disneyland for the retired. Produced by WE tv and Washington Square. Ten half-hour episodes premiere April 28 at 10p.
  • You’re Wearing That?!? – New series where mothers and daughters make each other over. Hosted by Luciene Salomone, the series will feature American Idol contestant Kimberley Locke, pro poker player Annie Duke and actress Charlene Tilton. Produced by WE tv and Authentic. Nine half-hour episodes premiere May 14 at 10p.
  • Mother Knows Best? – Reality series about Joan and Melissa Rivers as Joan moves in with Melissa and turns her life upside down. Produced by WE tv and Zoo Productions. Eight one-hour episodes slated to premiere in late 4th Qtr 2010.
  • Downsized – Series follows the Bruce family – self-proclaimed “cheapest family in America” – with seven teenaged children and two parents as they navigate the stresses of the economy and try their hand at growing their own food and making their own clothes among other cost-saving strategies. Produced by WE tv and Pie Town Productions. Eight one-hour episodes scheduled to premiere in 4Q 2010.
  • Fix My Family – Psychiatrist Dr. Tara Fields moves in with a family to help repair relationships filled with miscommunications and toxic history. Produced by WE tv and ISH. Eight one-hour episodes will premiere in 1Q 2011.

WE tv has one returning series on its docket:

  • Raising Sextuplets Season 2 – Jenny and Bryan Masche are back raising their toddler sextuplets and trying to survive a job loss and living on one salary. Produced by WE tv and Eric Schiff Productions. Eight one-hour episodes will premiere June 30 at 10p.

WE tv acquired one series:

  • Charmed – The network picked up 178 one-hour episodes of the drama series starring Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty and later Rose McGowan playing sisters who discover they are descendents of female witches. Premieres on WE tv June 21 at 5p.

WE tv has four additional series in development:

  • Wayne’s World (wt) – Reality series follows Wayne Newton and his family, who help run his on- and off-stage life. Ping Pong Productions is developing the series.
  • Wild Flowers (wt) – Series follows the women of Enchanted Florist floral shop in Las Vegas. Leftfield Productions is developing.
  • Staten Island Cakes (wt) – Reality series follows Vinny, a 19-year old pastry chef who runs a hot cake shop in NYC along with his Italian family. Nancy Glass Productions is developing.
  • Dr. Halligan Project (wt) – Series project will showcase female veterinarian, Karen “Doc” Halligan. PB&J Productions is developing.

Made In Hollywood is going into its sixth season this fall while Made In Hollywood: Teen Edition is beginning its fifth season in 2010-2011.

Casting Call: Executive producers for FOX’s musical series Glee are hosting national casting calls, searching for young talented performers to fill new roles during the show’s second season. Starting yesterday, amateur and professional performers, age 16 to 26, are invited to submit five-minute audition videos via MySpace at myspace.com/gleeauditions . The deadline to submit videos is April 26, 2010. The submitted videos must include a one-minute explanation why the participant wants to be on the show and a 4-minute demonstration of their singing ability by performing one of Glee’s hits such as True Colors, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Lean on Me. The singer must sing a cappella or with a single instrument accompaniment via MySpace Karaoke or by uploading their own pre-recorded videos.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: CBS hit the mark Saturday night at 2.8/10 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS won with NCAA Basketball at 3.7/14 followed by two Cops episodes on FOX averaging a 1.5/6. CBS with more NCAA Basketball and a portion of Crimetime Saturday topped with 3.3/11 and FOX’s AMW: America Fights Back came next at 1.7/5. NBC edged into #1 with Law & Order: SVU at 1.3/4 while CBS’ Crimetime Saturday and 48 Hours Mystery averaged a 1.2/4 in #2.

Sunday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS concluded another weekend Sunday night at #1 with 4.0/11 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS won the 7p hour as 60 Minutes posted a 3.1/9 and ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos was next at 1.9/6. CBS placed first at 8p with a combo of 60 Minutes and Amazing Race averaging a 3.3/9 while FOX’s repeat comedies The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show averaged a 2.7/7 in second place. CBS continued in the winning seat through 9p as Amazing Race and Undercover Boss averaged a 4.5/11 followed by the encore FOX sitcoms Family Guy and Sons of Tucson with an average of 2.9/7. Monday  A18-49 Analysis: ABC breezed into first place Monday night, posting a 4.9/14 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars ruled the 8p hour with 5.1/14 followed by CBS’ sitcoms How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement averaging a 2.6/7. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars increased its ratings hold during 9p to a 6.1/16 while CBS’ other Monday night comedies, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory averaged a 3.6/9 in second place. At 10p, a new episode of Castle brought a clean sweep for ABC at 3.5/10 with an encore of CSI: Miami on CBS next at 2.2/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Marc Goldstein, is leaving his position as CEO of GroupM North America today to established Marc Goldstein, Media Solutions LLC based in New York and provide an assortment of consulting services to advertising, marketing and media industry businesses.  The first clients of the new entity are GroupM and the Association of National Advertisers, the nation’s leading trade association for major marketers. His role with GroupM will be to serve as a senior advisor to the company’s four media service agencies–Maxus, MEC, MediaCom, and Mindshare–on issues including strategy, integrated communications, and media buying, among others.  At the ANA, Marc will work with the association’s Alliance for Family Entertainment Committee, which is comprised of almost 40 leading US-based advertisers.  The Alliance has been behind putting 20 or more primetime family shows including Gilmore Girls, Everybody Hates Chris, Chuck and Friday Night Lights on the air. Marc has worked with the Alliance for many years and for the last nine years served on the Alliance’s Executive Committee. His new consulting business will spearhead the Alliance’s mission to develop content reflecting today’s American families across multiple platforms. He will also work with the Alliance’s various content development partners.  Knock ’em dead, Marc!  

Jon Kaiser was appointed Digital Director with Maxus North America, which is one of the four worldwide WPP media and marketing agencies within GroupM along with MEC, MediaCom and Mindshare. In his new role, Jon will supervise the agency’s digital communications activities in the US and Canada. Based in New York, Jon will report to Louis Jones, CEO, Maxus North America.

The Orchard, a global company involved in music and video distribution, named Prashant Bahadur as GM. Prashant will be in charge of the implementation and management of the company’s global business strategy. In other promotions, The Orchard upped Josh Builder to VP/Production Development and Operations; Jaclyn Ranere as VP/Digital Marketing; Scott Bergman as VP/Sales and Marketing; and Tom Lorenc was hired as VP/Engineering, joining from RDAI where he served as Director/Technology. All executives are based at The Orchard’s headquarters in New York City.

Former AOL advertising executive Cate Carley was tapped as VP/East Coast Sales at iVillage, the digital brand targeting women. Cate and her team are charged with increasing revenue across all areas of iVillage. Cate reports to Joseph Lagani, SVP/Advertising Sales, iVillage.

Susan Rovner was promoted to EVP/Development with Warner Bros. Television (WBTV), reporting directly to Peter Roth, WBTV President. In her new position, Susan will oversee the development of new primetime programming for broadcast networks in addition to managing the company’s drama and comedy development teams.
 
Lionsgate hired Priscilla Pesci effective immediately as SVP/Television Marketing where she will supervise all facets of domestic and international marketing for Lionsgate’s TV unit which produces such series as Mad Men and Weeds. Priscilla will oversee global licensing, merchandising, promotions and publicity across all platforms. Based in Los Angeles, Priscilla will report to Peter Iacono, Managing Director/International Television. Most recently, Priscilla was SVP/Marketing for MGM Worldwide Television Group. Additionally, Lionsgate elevated Tori Crotts as Executive Director/Television Marketing where she takes on an expanded role in creative services and global markets, initiating global marketing assets and media campaigns for broadcasters and network partners.

Si TV added Anna Rios as Director/Research. Anna joins the network from Walt Disney-ABC Television Network where she was the primetime research manager.

The Gotham Group tagged Eric Robinson as EVP/Production and Development. Eric will have responsibility over the company’s first-look agreement with Sony Pictures Animation to develop animated and hybrid films. Previously, Eric was SVP/Production and Development at The Weinstein Company.
