~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Fans of AMC’s Mad Men will have to wait until early 2012 for the return of the series in its fifth installment.  AMC in a statement yesterday has “officially authorized production of season 5 of Mad Men” though because of an ongoing contract disagreement with series creator Matthew Weiner the production schedule has been pushed back.  For its first four seasons, Mad Men launched new episodes during the summer. Mad Men is produced by Lionsgate.

Monday’s 730p live address from President Obama about American involvement in Libya was viewed by nearly 26 million viewers over eight networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, Telemundo, CNN, CNBC, FOX News Channel and MSNBC.

Tying vegan cupcakes with saving animals is the theme of Animal Planet’s new summer series Sweet Avenger (wt).  The 12-episode half-hour series highlights the mission of Danielle Konya, founder and owner of Vegan Treats who harms no animals in making her sweet treats and hopes to convince customers to become vegan in the process. Sweet Avenger is produced by Optomen Productions for Animal Planet.

A third season of drama series Justified was ordered yesterday by FX though there are six new episodes yet to air in season two.  The series’ third season received 13 new episodes from production partners FX Productions and Sony Pictures Television.  The current second season episodes in first run are averaging 3.9 million total viewers and 2.0 million among A18-49.  The season two finale of Justified is scheduled for May 4 at 10p. Furthermore, FX granted a third season renewal for Archer with 16 episodes. Three new Archer episodes will air after It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia this September with the other 13 eps airing in early 2012.

Talk show duo Alexis Stewart and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt are back on Hallmark Channel in a late-night block featuring back-to-back 30m series. Beginning April 8, new series Whatever, You’re Wrong airs at 11p where Alexis and Jennifer offer their perspective on news of the day. Following at 1130p, a new season of Whatever, Martha! opens, the series that dishes on vintage Martha Stewart episodes.  Alexis and Jennifer are also co-hosts of Whatever with Alexis & Jennifer on Sirius Radio.

Lou Diamond Phillips tapped to host Military Channel’s new movie franchise, An Officer and a Movie on Friday nights starting this week.  Phillips will converse with retired and active duty officers who provide expert commentary about the battles depicted in the Hollywood films presented.  This Friday at 8p, An Officer and a Movie kicks off with The Great Santini starring Robert Duvall and other movies highlighted include Kelly’s Heroes, Hart’s War, Windtalkers, Three Kings and The Dirty Dozen among others.

The curtain rises on new E! series The Dance Scene April 10 at 1030p featuring world-renown choreographer and creative director, Laurieann Gibson.  Produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions, The Dance Scene showcases Gibson and her group of aspiring dancers and choreographers as they work with top-level performers and celebrities worldwide. 

This fall, Discovery Fit & Health launches six new episodes of Dr. G: Medical Examiner as part of a new season.  The series follows Jan “Dr. G” Garavaglia, based at the District 9 Medical Examiner’s Office in Florida, as she delves into puzzling case files involving untimely deaths. Atlas Media produces the series for Discovery Fit & Health. 

Half-hour health and nutrition series, Fit to Hit will launch a second season on Tennis Channel beginning this Sunday at 7p.  Hosted by Danielle Dotzenrod, the series offers diet and fitness advice focused on the tennis amateur and professional player. The series will air weekly on Sunday nights through the spring.

As March Madness winds down, Nielsen reveals an estimated 99.9 million total viewers watched all or a portion of CBS Sports’ and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship games from March 15 through last Sunday.

Miniseries Mildred Pierce starring Kate Winslet premiered Sunday night with Parts I and II, averaging 1.3 million viewers for HBO.  Women comprised 63% of the adult viewership.  Part II held 94% of the audience from 9p to 10p.

Monday’s season premiere of The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family at 8p clocked in with 1.1 million viewers among W18-34 and a 3.1 rating. Directly after at 9p, Make It or Break It opened a new season delivering 798,000 with A18-34 and 637,000 with W18-34 and a 1.9 rating.

RHI Entertainment, Inc. said it received approval from bankruptcy court to emerge from Chapter 11 under a Plan of Reorganization which will reduce the company’s debt and obligations by more than $400 million.  Under the Reorg, RHI will have allowed for a reduction of debt of $298 million, or 49%; and all remaining unsecured creditors claims to be paid in full.

Soon after the final The Oprah Winfrey Show in syndication is taped, the new talk show for OWN helmed by Rosie O’Donnell will move into the Harpo Studios in Chicago.  O’Donnell’s new one-hour daily daytime show will be produced by the Harpo Studios production team and debut this fall on OWN.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:   CBS swished in a win Saturday night by posting a 2.4/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS won the 8p hour which was the mid-point for the NCAA Basketball Championship game between UConn and Arizona at 3.5/13; FOX followed with two Cops rerun episodes averaging a 1.6/6.  CBS continued in the lead through 9p with the end of the NCAA Basketball Championship game and Crimetime Saturday averaging a 2.6/10 and FOX trailed in second place with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.6/5.  CBS ended the night still on top as 48 Hours Mystery was #1 at 10p with a 1.5/5 and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat was next at 1.1/4.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS ended the weekend in #1 Sunday night with a 3.3/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  60 Minutes on CBS was the victor at 7p with a 3.1/10 while ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos and the average of FOX’s The Simpsons and American Dad repeats tied for second place at 1.6/5 apiece.  CBS raced to the finish line first during 8p with The Amazing Race at 3.2/9 and ABC’s Secret Millionaire was #2 at 2.7/8.  The winner of the 9p hour was CBS and Undercover Boss at 3.2/9 and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice held the #2 spot with 2.7/7. Then at 10p, NBC prevented CBS from claiming a clean sweep of the night as Celebrity Apprentice delivered a 3.4/10 and CBS slid back to second place with CSI: Miami at 2.7/8.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

ABC News asked Juju Chang to take on a full-time position as a Special Correspondent and fill-in Anchor for Nightline.  Juju’s new role will become effective in the next several weeks. For the last 15 months, Juju has served as news reader on Good Morning America.  ABC News President Ben Sherwood said they will replace the news reader position on GMA in the coming days.

The newly-formed UK production unit of Red Arrow Entertainment Group snagged Simon Maxwell as Head/Drama and Comedy.  Simon joins from Greenroom Entertainment where he generated projects ranging from television, feature film and multi-platform projects.

Scott Horne upped to VP/GM with Bright House Networks, Birmingham.  Scott will have oversight for the management of the Bright House Networks in the Birmingham area, in charge of administrative, operational, financial, marketing and technical activities. He reports to Karen Broach, Regional VP. 

Former Canwest Broadcasting CMO, Walter Levitt joins Comedy Central in New York City as the new EVP/Marketing.  Walter is a key member of the network’s senior leadership team where he will manage all areas of strategic and creative brand development, consumer marketing and cross-business efforts.  He reports to Michele Ganeless, President, Comedy Central.

Discovery Communications elevated Declan O’Connor to VP/Direct Response and Paid Programming where he will manage budget and revenue targets for the company’s US based networks and the Direct Response and Paid Programming team.

Effective immediately, Brooklyn, NY-based creative agency Big Spaceship added and promoted key staffers:

  • Matthew Lipson rejoins the company in the newly-minted position of VP/Client Strategy and Engagement, reporting to Michael Lebowitz, Founder/CEO.
  • Becca Beacham joins as the new Client Engagement Manager to help clients with their digital needs.  Becca reports to S. Jason Prohaska who advances to the expanded role of GM/Managing Director where he leads operations for the agency.
  • Ranae Heuer promoted to VP/Client Services and she will head client services and production teams. Ranae and S. Jason both report to Michael Lebowitz.

Michael Carey named SVP/Director of Marketing with McCann West starting April 4. In his newly-created role, Michael spearheads the company’s growth goals and marketing for McCann Erickson’s offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Michael will be located in San Francisco, reporting to Bob Ellis, GM, McCann San Francisco and Cathy Saidiner, President, McCann Los Angeles.
