A new reality series on Lifetime will discuss openly what today’s women want when it comes to sex, marriage and relationships.  The series, 7 Days of Sex challenges couples to be intimate for one week straight in an effort to save their marriage.  Produced by Shed Media US, the series premieres April 26 at 10p leading into the debut of the network’s new celebrity interview series The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet. 

AMC will air a preview of the opening episode of new unscripted series The Pitch on April 8 at 11p following Mad Men and The Killing.  Produced by Studio Lambert, The Pitch is an eight-episode series that goes inside the world of advertising agencies and what lengths they go through to pitch a major new piece of business.  Following the sneak preview, The Pitch’s premiere episode which features SUBWAY restaurants will be available via AMCTV.com, iTunes and YouTube.  The Pitch will return with its full season on April 30 at 9p followed by an encore of the premiere episode in its regular time period at 10p.

The eighth season of Deadliest Catch opens on Discovery Channel April 10 at 9p and the premiere coincides with the series’ 100th episode.  The new season has several captains returning as well as introducing new skippers with the collective goal of finding the highly sought-after Alaskan king crab.

UPFRONT 2012 Update:  USA Network will present its Upfront event during the same week as the broadcast networks on May 17 at 330p.  USA’s event will be held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City and will feature performances by Jennifer Hudson and Mark Ronson. 

Industry veteran James Marrinan, 61 died last Friday.  Mr. Marrinan began his career at Viacom and was with this company for more than 12 years.  He also worked for ITV Entertainment to head its international division then later joined Warner Bros. International Television Distribution as SVP/International Television Program Sales, a position he held until the company merged with Turner Entertainment in 1998.   In 1999, Mr. Marrinan was co-founder and served as MD of Entertainment Media Consultants, a company that has partners in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

BBC America acquired two new drama miniseries that will air as part of the network’s Dramaville franchise.  White Heat has six one-hour episodes and is produced and distributed by ITV Global Entertainment and Inside Men with four 50-minute episodes is produced by BBC and distributed by BBC Worldwide.  White Heat is about seven friends from 1965 to the present day and it premieres May 9 at 10p.  Inside Men focuses on three employees of a security depot who plan and execute a multi-million pound cash heist.  Inside Men debuts June 20 at 10p.  Beginning tonight at 10p, the third installment of Whitechapel debuts on BBC America as part of the Dramaville franchise.

As of March 23, 2012, the sale of KSCI-TV in Los Angeles to NRJ TV was approved by Judge Walrath and the transaction will be complete once FCC approval is granted for the license transfer.  KSCI-TV is a top-rated Asian-language TV station offering news and entertainment in multiple languages to approximately 2.5 million Asian consumers. NRJ TV is an owner and operator of several independent stations and after this transaction will own stations in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston.

Ovation made a deal content agreement with ITV Global Entertainment, Inc. covering several drama series, documentaries and movies.  Ovation will have the US premiere rights to the drama series Bouquet of Barbed Wire (3 eps/60 min) and Martina Cole’s The Runaway (6 eps/60 min); the one-hour documentary ABBA: The Mamma Mia Story; and the film performance Johnny Cash in San Quentin and the movies Northanger Abbey, Tess and The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders.

A slew of pre-MIPTV sales for shows and formats starring Gordon Ramsay were reported by Optomen International, the ALL3MEDIA-owned distribution unit of Optomen Television.  Licensing deals were made for Hotel Hell (6 eps/60 min) with France’s W9, Sweden’s Kanal Fem, Belgium’s TVM and Poland’s TVN.  Hotel Hell will debut this summer on FOX in the US and is produced by Ramsay’s production company One Potato Two Potato.  Additionally, Kitchen Nightmare secured format license deals with TVN in Poland, 1+1 Studios in Ukraine, Finland’s Nelonen, TV Prima in the Czech Republic and Spain’s La Sexta to produce local versions of the UK format.

Portfolio International made deals for four of its cooking/lifestyle series.  Portfolio sold French Food At Home (78 eps/30 min) to Sanoma Entertainment in Finland and to LLC IVi.RU in Russia; Chef at Home series (157 eps/30 min) was picked up by Asia Food Channel; Chef Abroad (26 eps/30 min) will air on Food TV in Korea; and Everyday Exotic has been picked up by Discovery India.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Entertainment One forged a deal with Steven Bochco to produce the futuristic drama series Evolution which will be presented at this year’s MIPTV.  The series is set 3 million years in the future and is about a boy who discovers a box containing all human knowledge which allows him to become a leader.  Bochco will co-write the series with Bryan Law.  Bochco will further serve as EP along with eOne head John Morayniss and eOne’s Michael Rosenberg; Law will also be a supervising producer.  eOne will handle global rights for the series across all media.

British actress Laura Haddock landed the role of Lucrezia Donati, the mistress of Lorenzo Medici and lover of Leonardo da Vinci in the upcoming original series Da Vinci’s Demons for STARZ.  Haddock will play opposite Tom Riley who was previously cast as Leonardo da Vinci.  The series is a joint production and the first project under the multi-year deal between Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Productions.  Production will commence this summer and STARZ will debut the eight-part series in the US in 2013.  BBC Worldwide will distribute the series in most international territories.

Season three of TNT’s drama Rizzoli & Isles will see Eddie Cibrian joining in a multi-episode run, reports TVLine.  Cibrian will play Dennis Rockmond, an attractive motivational speaker who meets medical examiner Isles (Sasha Alexander) and tries to entice her out of her shell.  Rizzoli & Isles debuts its third season on June 5 at 9p on TNT.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS had a slam dunk Saturday with the A18-49 viewers at 2.7/9, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship won at 3.8/14 and ABC’s Shark Tank repeat was next at 0.8/3.  During 9p, the end of the NCAA Basketball Championship on CBS and the network’s Crimetime Saturday encore averaged a 3.1/11 to win while Univision’s weekly Sabado Gigante placed second at 0.9/3.  CBS polished off the final win of the night through 10p with a combination of Crimetime Saturday and 48 Hours Mystery rerun at 1.3/4 and Univision’s Sabado Gigante was #2 once again at 1.1/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS topped the pack Sunday at 2.4/7 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS opened the night a winner with a combination of the NCAA Post-Gun and 60 Minutes at an average of 3.7/13 with FOX’s comedies The Simpsons repeat and The Cleveland Show next at an average of 1.3/4.  ABC was #1 at 8p with Once Upon a Time at 2.9/8 followed by CBS’ 60 Minutes and The Amazing Race at an average of 2.5/7.  ABC was confident in first place with Desperate Housewives at 2.6/7 and CBS’ The Amazing Race and The Good Wife at an average of 2.1/5 shared #2 with FOX’s sitcoms Family Guy and American Dad also at an average of 2.1/5.  Then at 10p, a three-way tie for first place occurred between ABC’s GCB, CBS’ CSI: Miami and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice at 2.1/6 each and trailing in fourth place was Univision’s Sal y Pimienta at 0.8/2.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC’s ratings were stable Monday winning the A18-49 demo with a 3.7/10, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, NBC’s The Voice hit the right note with viewers at 4.3/12 while ABC’s Dancing with the Stars waltzed into second place at 3.1/9.  In its second hour during 9p, The Voice on NBC remained at #1 with a 4.8/12 and ABC’s second hour of Dancing with the Stars kept its steady #2 beat at 3.3/8.  ABC then surpassed the competition at 10p as Castle won at 2.3/6 and NBC’s Smash followed next at 2.1/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Showtime Networks Inc. elevated Gary Garfinkel and Kent Sevener as Co-Heads to manage the network’s Acquisitions Department.  Gary and Kent will be involved with evaluating, negotiating and acquiring feature films, documentaries, stand-up comedy, specials and music programs for all of Showtime Networks’ channels Showtime, The Movie Channel and Flix in addition to its multiplex channels.  The duo will also oversee the company’s output deals with various studios.

Canada’s Peace Point Entertainment Group established the company’s international distribution unit, Peace Point Rights.  The company also appointed Eric Muller as VP/International Sales and Acquisitions and Julie Chang as VP/Business Affairs and North American Acquisitions.

Endemol promoted Laurens Drillich to become Managing Director of Endemol Netherlands Media Group.  Laurens will assume his new role on July 31, 2012 following the departure of Peter Adrichem who currently fulfills the functions as Managing Director of Endemol Netherlands Group and has announced his decision to exit the company.  Laurens will supervise all of the company’s production brands including Endemol Netherlands, SNP Media, 625 TV Production, TVBV, HaagseBluf and S & V Fiction.

Herb Ford was added in the newly-created role as National AE for the Live Well Network based in New York.  Herb will be in charge of national advertising sales for the lifestyle programming service that encompasses broadcast, online and wireless service for digital channels in local markets.  Live Well Network is presently available to 60% of US TV households.  Herb begins his new position April 2 and he will report to Emily Barr, who oversees the Live Well Network in addition to serving as President/GM of ABC-owned WLS-TV in Chicago. 

Boulder, CO-based Victors & Spoils hired Chad Walker as Creative Director as well as Jen Miller and April Moore as Account Managers.  All three positions are newly-created and reflect the company’s growing client roster and needs.

Mobile marketing company, Mogreet added Serena Ehrlich as Director/Marketing and Anthony Ward as Director/Sales.  Serena and Anthony will be charged to continue Mogreet’s continued growth in the mobile marketing arena and in the mobile social sharing platform.
