TLC is expanding its series franchise Say Yes to the Dress with a second series set in the South as Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta launches in July. TLC ordered 12 30m episodes of the new series located at the bustling bridal salon Bridals by Lori in Atlanta. TLC’s original Say Yes to the Dress returns April 23 at 10p taped inside the Kleinfeld bridal salon in New York produced by Half Yard Productions. North South Productions produces Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

Spike TV is bringing back a second season of its original series Deadliest Warrior, starting April 20 at 10p. The new season, with 13 one-hour episodes, will pit more of history’s greatest warriors against each other to find out which one rules. A few of the match-ups include Attila the Hun vs. Alexander the Great, Jesse James Gang vs. Al Capone Gang to Comanche vs. Mongol and Navy Seal vs. Israeli Commando. Prior to the debut episode of Deadliest Warrior, Spike TV will air the 90-minute special Deadliest Warrior Season 1: Back for Blood at 830p also on April 20. The series is produced for Spike TV by Morningstar Entertainment.

CBS’ Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre said yesterday the comedy will produce a total of 22 episodes this season instead of the originally ordered 24 episodes, cites NYT. Lorre said 22 eps is still considered a full order and the network had asked for two additional eps that will not be produced. Charlie Sheen’s time in the rehab facility has necessitated in the episode cut-back for the comedy series.

2010 UPFRONT: IFC

IFC introduced its new programming slate in addition to a fresh look and branding strategy, culminating in the new tagline, “Always On. Slightly Off.” The network unveils its rebrand this month along with the programming direction of taking the network from being a home for independent films to one offering original and acquired content. IFC showcases two original comedies as part of this focus:

  • The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret – Headlined by David Cross, this series with six 30m episodes, follows Todd Margaret (Cross), a pathological liar who suddenly finds himself running his corporation’s office in London. Co-produced by IFC and RDF Television, the series will premiere during fourth quarter 2010.
  • Onion News Network – Scripted comedy series inspired by the weekly newspaper and web series of the same name. The series will be a weekly report of zany news and hilarious headlines with wacky debates between the show’s news anchors and guests. Produced by Area Man Productions LLC, the 10-episode half-hour series will debut in first quarter 2011.

IFC acquired series:

  • The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town – Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson reunite in this eight-episode half-hour comedy/mystery series offering a fresh narrative format. Produced by Susan Cavan of Accent Entertainment and premieres August 2010.
  • Dead Set – Zombie/horror series that takes place on the set of UK’s Big Brother will make its debut in the US over five nights, October 25-29 at 12 midnight. Produced by Endemol Entertainment with Zeppotron.

IFC also has a number of original series in development:

  • I Love the A.D.’s (wt) – Animated series set during biblical times with dinosaurs added in. Developed by Ed Productions (Crossroads Television).
  • Variety Shac – Comedy series about the four-member female sketch comedy troupe called Variety Shac.
  • Dieter Horn in Night Port – Satirical series spoofs other TV action/comedy series from the 1980s such as Miami Vice and Knight Rider and centers on a German criminal who fights crime in Port City or faces a lifetime in jail. Developed by Just For Laughs Muse Comedy.
  • Jobbed – Scripted workplace comedy set in the East Village unit of the Manhattan Dept. of Labor’s Unemployment Office.
  • There Might Be Cake – Comedian Greg Behrendt hosts a weekly discussion with other famous comedians about their careers and their big breaks. Developed by Avalon Television.
  • Young, Broke & Beautiful – Host/travel book author Broke-Ass Stuart journeys to cities around the US and takes viewers underground to discover cool and fascinating experiences and lifestyles for the young, broke and beautiful.


UPFRONT 2010: HALLMARK CHANNEL AND HALLMARK MOVIE CHANNEL

Hallmark Channel is the exclusive new home of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, library series/specials as well as new original series and specials.  Hallmark Channel launches this upfront with an overall new Lifestyle theme and on Monday, March 29, will air the first of its MSLO series, repackaged episodes of The Martha Stewart Show. In the fall, Hallmark will premiere new episodes of The Martha Stewart Show, as well as an original Martha talk show and cooking series from MSLO.  Hallmark Channels will also usher in 24 original movies in 2011 as part of its Hallmark Movie Original Movies banner, premiering on Saturday nights at 9p.

A sampling of the upcoming Hallmark Channel Original Movies:

  • The Wild Girl – Starring Brian Austin Green and Graham Greene, a story about an unlikely team that goes on a rescue mission in the Sierra Madre Badlands and discovers an orphaned Apache girl in the wilderness. Premieres April 24 at 9p on Hallmark Movie Channel.
  • Growing the Big One – Stars Shannen Doherty about a young woman who inherits her family’s farm that is in debt and decides to try her hand at growing prize-winning pumpkins. She ends up falling in love with her contest partner and her grandfather’s small town. Produced by GBO Films.
  • The Night Before the Night Before Christmas – Stars Jennifer Beals and Rick Roberts as parents of a family that is too busy to get ready for Christmas. Muse Entertainment Productions produces.
  • Call Me Mrs. Miracle – Movie in development stars Doris Roberts in the next installment of Debbie Macomber’s Mrs. Miracle, which premiered on the Hallmark Channel in December 2009.

Hallmark Channel will be in 90+ million homes by year’s end, and Hallmark Movie Channel in 40 million homes.

Ovation began teaming with content distributor Digital Rights Groups (DRG) last fall, making Ovation’s original television content available to the global marketplace under the umbrella of Ovation International. Recent licensing agreement sales include those with Knowledge Network, Canada; ABC in Australia; TV Ontario, Canada, DR in Denmark; Pramer of Latin America; TV3, Catalonia, Spain; Living Channel, New Zealand; Globosat, Brazil; and Qantas Airways.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Jerry Springer will host GSN’s new dating game show, Baggage about people with baggage looking for love. GSN will air Baggage as a daily strip, Monday through Friday at 630p beginning April 19. The network will air 40 total half-hour episodes through June 11.

Kevin Kline is venturing into series television with a new project in development at HBO, per THR. The 60m project will star Kline playing a prominent doctor who must reinvent his life after a 15-year prison sentence for murdering his mistress. Kline also executive produces with Gavin Polone and Judy Hofflund, Kline’s manager.

Casting Call: A cable network is casting for a new show about the growing problem of shopping and spending addiction in America. The show is looking for women and men age 25-45 that are drowning in debt and have a spending addiction affecting their family and friends. Those selected to appear on the show will receive free help from experienced professionals. Saturday A18-49 Analysis: CBS unseated the competition Saturday night, winning with a 3.6/13 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. During the 8p hour, CBS led with its NCAA Basketball Championship coverage at 3.7/14 while FOX’s two Cops episodes averaged a 1.6/6 in second place. At 9p, CBS held firmly in first place with more college basketball at 3.7/13 with FOX once again at #2 with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.7/6. Then at 10p, CBS made its final sweep of the night with the NCAA Basketball Championships and the start of 48 Hours Mystery at 3.4/11, while NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat came next at 1.1/4.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: Waltzing into first place Monday, ABC delivered a 5.4/15 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC opened a tenth season of Dancing with the Stars at 8p with a 5.8/16 while CBS’ sitcoms How I Met Your Mother and Rules of Engagement averaged a 3.4/9 at #2. ABC continued to pick up steam through 9p with more of the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars at 6.9/17 and CBS claimed #2 again with its comedies Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory averaging a 5.1/13. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Chris Philip, formerly President/Worldwide Sales and Distribution at London-based Power, has established a new production and distribution company, Engine Entertainment. The new company has offices in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and London and will make its debut at this year’s MIPTV with a slate of programming. 

Hyde Park Imagenation added Jason Mirch and Yee Yeo Chang. Jason is based at the Abu Dhabi office where he heads the content unit for the joint venture with Hyde Park Entertainment and Imagenation Abu Dhabi. Yee Yeo will be located in Singapore and in charge of operations for Hyde Park Imagenation Singapore in addition to identifying and developing projects in Asia.

Apex Media/CrossMedia Works tapped Steve Ference as VP/Broadcast Sales. Based in Phoenix, Steve will be involved with developing and overseeing affiliate account relationships with local broadcast stations, station groups, affiliate networks in addition to expanding the company’s local broadcast trade and barter business. Additionally, Dave Ware was named VP/Sales to replace Steve. Dave has previous experience with various media sales positions including LSM, NSM and GSM at Sinclair, Emmis and Paramount stations.

The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) appointed Bob Walker as EVP/Marketing and Cross Platform Development. In his new position, Bob will provide oversight for the company’s overall marketing strategy as well as other marketing-related activities such as research, consumer marketing and distribution marketing. Based in Atlanta, Bob reports to Michael J. Kelly, CEO, TWCC.
