More than two weeks before its first season premiere, Starz has renewed its original drama series Magic City for a second season with ten episodes. Magic City premieres April 6 at 10p and is set in 1959 Miami Beach. The series is created and executive produced by Mitch Glazer and it stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olga Kurylenko and Danny Huston. Production on the second season will commence later this year with an expected premiere on STARZ in 2013.
Thursdays this summer will be home to TBS’ new original comedies starting with buddy comedy Men at Work premiering May 24 at 10p with back-to-back episodes. Beginning July 19, new workplace comedy Sullivan & Son will take over the time period. Men at Work stars Danny Masterson, Michael Cassidy, Adam Busch and James Lesure and was created by Breckin Meyer and produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fanfare. Sullivan & Son, set inside a popular bar in a working-class Pittsburgh neighborhood stars comedian Steve Byrne and is produced by Wild West Picture Show Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television; Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and Rob Long are executive producers.
A trio of new series are joining HGTV’s lineup, per B&C. Buying and Selling (wt) is a spinoff of the network’s Property Brothers series where Jonathan Scott prepares a family’s home for sale while brother Drew finds their next property. The series debuts in September. Two other new HGTV series are spinoffs of the House Hunters franchise: House Hunters: Where Are They Now? debuts in October and looks in on memorable House Hunters families to see what happened after finding their new house. Living Abroad picks up where House Hunters International leaves off and looks at what it takes for Americans to adjust to a new country. The premiere date of Living Abroad has not been set yet.
On Tuesday, TV One, owned by Comcast, presented its original programming roster including several new series:
- Save My Son, hosted by Dr. Steve Perry, this series will chronicle the struggle of black families to save their sons who have fallen victim to bad choices and bad influences. Premieres in third quarter.
- Unresolved: Celebrity Cases is an investigative series examining headline events including celebrity homicides and unsolved mysteries. Premieres in fourth quarter.
- The Ladies of R&B is a one-hour series about the lives of singers Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Keke Wyatt, Monifah Carter and Syleena Johnson as they work to put their lives to right. Debuts in third quarter.
TV One’s projects in development:
- The Rickey Smiley Show is a comedy starring radio personality Smiley as a character loosely based on his own life as an Atlanta radio DJ and a single father to four adopted children.
- Destined is a spinoff of the network’s series Unsung focused on the best and brightest black actors in film and television.
- Belles is a sitcom about an upscale soul food restaurant owned by the widowed patriarch Big Bill Cooper.
- Church Folk is another sitcom about The Hunters, a prestigious family forced to leave their newly-built mega-church in Los Angeles to start over in the South.
TV One also announced series renewals for Unsung, Life After, Find Our Missing and Washington Watch with Roland Martin.
Upfront 2012: IFC
Yesterday, IFC hosted its first-ever Upfront event and offered up its 2012-2013 original programming lineup. For 2012, IFC’s series programming includes:
- Comedy Bang! Bang! based on the podcast of the same name created by Scott Aukerman. The half-hour program copies the format of a late-night talk show featuring celebrity appearances and comedy sketches. In each episode, Aukerman engages his guests with an unfiltered and improvisational interview style and working alongside him is one-man musical genius Reggie Watts. Celebrity guests will include Elizabeth Banks, Michael Cera, Jon Hamm, Amy Poehler, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Adam Scott among others. Premieres June 8 with 10 half-hour episodes. Produced for IFC by Abso Lutely Productions.
- Bunk is a comedy game show where comedians compete in inane challenges to win surreal prizes. The show is hosted by Kurt Branohler. Produced for IFC by Avalon Television. Ten half-hour episodes debut June 8.
- Whisker Wars returns for a second season with six new half-hour episodes produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company. Premieres 4Q 2012.
- Also for 4Q 2012, IFC premieres the one-hour Trapped in the Closet, described as part movie musical and part urban operetta combined with an epic music video. The program reunites characters introduced in the hip hopera from R. Kelly that launched in 2007 on-air and online who are connected by sexual adventures, little people and a mysterious package. Produced by Sylvester Films and Fuzzy Bunny Films.
On the IFC series docket for 2013:
- Portlandia season three opens January 2013 preceded by a one-hour The Brunch Special airing this summer and a half-hour Holiday Season special airing in 2012. Portlandia’s third season will have ten half-hour episodes and is produced by Broadway Video.
- Out There is a coming-of-age series about Chad and his little brother Jay and best friend Chris living in a small town as they deal with adolescence and all the challenges of puberty, first loves, enemies, local legends and more. The series with ten half-hour episodes debuts in January 2013 and is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.
- Maron (wt) featuring comedian Marc Maron who explores a fictionalized version of his own life including relationships, career as well as his podcast WTF which highlights his conversations with celebrities and other comedians. Produced for IFC by Fox Television Studios and Apostle, the series has ten half-hour episodes and premieres in 3Q 2013.

Rive Gauche Television picked up the unscripted series Sins & Secrets (29 x 60 min). The series is produced by Jupiter Entertainment and airs in the US on Discovery ID.
FX acquired the commercial television premiere rights to this past weekend’s #1 box office movie 21 Jump Street from Sony in addition to Universal’s The Lorax which was #1 at the box office the previous two weeks.

National music network, Fuse, part of The Madison Square Garden Company revealed a development slate featuring series covering a variety of genres (all titles below are working titles):
- Ambassadors of Rock is a reality show about devoted music fans who allow touring bands to crash their homes, drink their beverages and eat all their food. 2 Way Mirror is producing.
- Blaze Studios is a half-hour scripted musical comedy starring Marcus Paulk and Quinton Aaron taking a behind-the-scenes look at the staff and clients of a high-end recording studio.
- Bounce is docu-series focused on the stars of the New Orleans music scene. Produced by World of Wonder.
- Untitled Eric Balfour Project is a mockumentary series created by and starring Eric Balfour about a young band in L.A. struggling for success. Off The Grid Entertainment is producing.
- Major is a half-hour scripted musical comedy from creator/writer Erik Weiner (Robot Chicken, Unscripted) produced by Dakota Pictures.
- Off Beat is a clip show hosted by comedian Mike E. Winfield and showcases funny and over-the-top music videos and viewer-created clips found online. Produced by FishBowl Worldwide Media.
- Radio Free is a half-hour scripted comedy about a group of students at a college radio station in the early 1980s as they find their identity through new wave music.
- Warped Roadies is a series going inside the Vans Warped Tour as it travels across the US with more than 60 bands. Magilla Entertainment is producing.
FremantleMedia North America made an exclusive multi-year overall deal with producer Matt Kunitz to develop and produce new, original unscripted content. Kunitz will join FremantleMedia in May and is behind such reality series as Wipeout and Fear Factor. Previously, Kunitz was with Endemol for 12 years. Rebecca Shumsky Quinn is also joining FremantleMedia as Kunitz’ development executive.
British comedian Eddie Izzard is joining NBC’s Munsters re-make pilot titled Mockingbird Lane playing the Grandpa. Al Lewis originally played the role of Grandpa in the 1960s Munsters series. Production on the project begins early this summer and is shepherded by creator Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer.
Janel Parrish who plays Mona on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars was elevated to series regular up from recurring status for the program’s third season, reports THR.
Casting Call: DIY Network is looking for desperate landscapes in need of a $25,000 yard makeover for its show America’s Most Desperate Landscape. Now through April 30, 2012, homeowners can upload photos and videos of their ugly front yards via DIYNetwork.com. This landscape makeover will be managed by DIY Network host and licensed contractor Jason Cameron and his Desperate Landscapes crew. The winner will also appear on the show for a one-hour special documenting the search and build which will air on DIY Network July 18 at 9p.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: CBS had a lucky night winning overall with a 1.3/4 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship game did best at 2.2/9 and ABC’s Shark Tank repeat followed at 0.9/3. CBS held the viewers at 9p with more of the NCAA Basketball Championship game between Iowa State and Kentucky at 2.9/10 and ABC remained firmly in second place with My Extreme Affliction at 1.2/4. CBS polished off a third win of the night during 10p with a combination of the NCAA Basketball Championship final and a 48 Hours Mystery encore at an average of 1.9/6 and ABC once again was #2 with more My Extreme Affliction at 1.2/4.

Monday A18-49 Analysis: NBC hit the right note Monday among A18-49 viewers with a 3.8/10, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. NBC’s The Voice topped at 8p with a 4.4/12 followed by CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls at an average of 3.5/10 and the new season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars was third at 3.4/10. NBC’s The Voice remained in first place through 9p at 4.8/12 and the second half of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars premiere moved into second place at 3.7/9. Effective immediately, Cablevision Systems Corporation hired Gregory McCastle as President/Cablevision Media Sales. David Kline, who most recently headed the company’s media sales is departing the company to pursue other opportunities.
Healthy lifestyle and wellness network, Veria Living has established Veria Living Worldwide as part of its global expansion efforts. The new division will engage partnerships with broadcasters and websites globally and will be led by Raymond Donahue, the company’s SVP/Head of Program Sales. Veria Living Worldwide will at first open five regional offices in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The European office based in London is headed by Virad Kaul; Mukund Cairae based in Dubai will head the Middle East regional office and will additionally continue as CEO/Middle East North Africa & Pakistan regions for Zee Network; and Tripta Singh will oversee the Asia-Pacific office in Hong Kong. All three will report to Raymond Donahue.
Ken Colen was named SVP within the Ipsos MediaCT organization to manage Ipsos’ sponsorship of the newly-launched Time Warner Medialab. Ken joins from Synovate which was acquired by Ipsos in October 2011.
Ellen Lovejoy advances to VP/International Content Sales with A+E Networks where she manages off-network sales of the company’s content in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Ellen is in charge of developing and executing sales strategies for the A+E Networks programming library including existing and new content. Additionally, Ellen will lead on IT, global format sales and operational activities to spur sales growth. Based in New York, Ellen will report to the yet-to-be-named Managing Director/International Content Sales.
Radio veteran Rene Morales takes on a new role as VP/GM for the Univision’s radio stations in Las Vegas. Prior to this new appointment, Rene was Single Market Sales Manager for Univision in Chicago.
Meredith Marakovits will become the New York Yankees Clubhouse Reporter for the YES Network. Meredith will report on the team during the networks’ Yankees game telecasts, pre- and post-game shows as well as for the program Yankees Batting Practice Today. Meredith will also appear on YES’ special Yankees programming and will contribute to YESNetwork.com.
Beginning in April, Justin Booth-Clibborn was added at BBH New York as Head/Integrated Production. Justin joins BBH after spending 11 years at the production company Psyop where he was CMO/Managing Partner. In his new position, Justin will manage the agency’s integrated production team and increasing the agency’s in-house integrated production efforts. He will report to John Patroulis, CCO.
