Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 21, 2007 and this is your first early morning kids briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Another crime-fighting hero enters the ring, as Columbia Pictures picks up the movie rights to Green Hornet from Neal H. Moritz, who will serve as the producer on the project.  Moritz acquired the rights to the property from Green Hornet Inc.  The Green Hornet made his first appearance in January 1936 on Detroit’s WXYZ radio station, the creation of the station’s George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, also the creators of The Lone Ranger.  In 1966 ABC premiered The Green Hornet TV series, which starred Van Williams in the title role and Bruce Lee (the Bruce Lee) as Kato.  Original Film‘s Ori Marmur will oversee development of the project on behalf of Moritz’s production company.  Neal H. Moritz is also the owner of Original Film, a feature film and TV company.

Talent Television and Bullseye TV Productions have inked a distribution deal for CBBC’s reality series Best of Friends.  Under the pact Bullseye TV holds the worldwide TV rights to 15×30′ episodes of the show outside of the UK.  The Best Of Friends features teams of five real-life 10-year-old friends that take on a range of challenging tasks that ultimately prove their friendship.  The series is produced by Talent TV’s John A. Marley.  Format rights and licensing and merchandising rights will also be available to buyers through Talent Television and Bullseye at MIP-TV.  Targeted to K6-12, Best of Friends currently airs in rotation on CBBC Channel and CBBC One. Talent Television is a subsidiary of Talent Group plc.

MORE KIDS STUFF

What is really big and green and will be out this year?  Nope, not talking about Shrek 3, but rather Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsScholastic has revealed that the seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series will be 784 pages long.  Combine that news with the fact that Scholastic intends to print 12 million copies in its first printing of Deathly Hallows and, well, do the math – that is a lot of paper.  That said, and here is the green part in case you were wondering, Scholastic says it will print the book on paper that contains a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste (pcw) fiber, furthermore, 65% of the paper used in the first US printing will be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), known for its responsible forest management.  Additionally, Scholastic’s deluxe edition of HP7 (100,000 copies) will be printed on paper that is also FSC certified and contains 100% pcw fiber, with jacket covers that are 30% pcw and will be manufactured using energy generated by wind power.  Moving forward, Scholastic plans to use 30% pcw in the printings of all the books in the HP series.

Discovery Kids will premiere Wilbur, a new mixed puppet and animated series, on April 16, 2007 at 11a, as part of its preschool programming block, Ready Set Learn!  From April 23, Wilbur will also begin airing on TLC at 7:30a.  Designed to promote early literacy skills and a love of books, each episode of the series finds Wilbur, a young calf, and his barnyard pals facing a new quandary.  Through reading books/stories aloud, rendered in animation, as well as the help of real kids in a recap of each story, the group is able to work their way out of every problem.  Conceived by three moms Jill Luedtke, Kim Anton and Tracey Hornbuckle, WILBUR is a production of Mercury Filmworks, in association with Chilco Productions, EKA Distribution, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Discovery Kids.  The series uses Shadowmation a puppetry technique developed by producer Mitchell Kriegman.  Ready Set Learn airs weekdays on Discovery Kids Channel 9a-2p and on TLC 6-9a.

In addition to Wilbur, Discovery Kids will introduce a new Ready Set Learn! programming line-up beginning the week of April 16, 2007.  That week will also include new episodes of Peep and the Big Wide World, ToddWorld, Hip Hop Harry and Bigfoot Presents: Meteor and the Mighty Monster Trucks.  The new Ready Set Learn! program schedule on Discovery Kids Channel as of April 16:

Australia’s ABC has acquired the animated series Alien Clones From Outer Space (52×11′) and has slated to premiere of the series on ABC Kids for October 2008.  Co-production by the US-based SupperTime Entertainment and Telescreen BV in the Netherlands, the series is based on H.B. Homzie’s Alien Clones humor books, which are published by Simon and Schuster.  SupperTime principals, Liz Stahler and Gerry Renert will serve as Executive Producers together with animation veteran and partner, Chris Henderson, and Telescreen principals, Theo van der Schaaf and Sjoerd Raemakers.

Scholastic is set to publish Main Street, a new series of books by Ann M. Martin, the author behind The Babysitters Club book series.  Welcome to Camden Falls, the first title in the Main Street series will be released simultaneously in May 2007 by Scholastic Paperbacks and Scholastic Audio.  Main Street revolves around sisters, Flora and Ruby, who reluctantly move to live with their grandmother in Camden Falls following the death of their parents.  The second book, Needle and Thread, will be published this August 2007 in both formats.  Launched in the late 1980s, The Babysitters Club, which includes 80 some book titles, has sold 176+ million copies to date.

MARKETING/LICENSING

If you are a long-range planner you might want to think about making reservations now for your 2011 vacation in Dubai; yeah the one in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).  That is the year that the new $1 billion theme park featuring Marvel’s cast of super heroes will open in Dubai as part of a newly-announced Marvel Entertainment and the UAE-based Al Ahli Group partnership.  The long-term agreement comes after more than two years of negotiations between Marvel and AAG.  The two companies are currently in the early stages of discussions about additional projects throughout the greater Pan Arabia region.

Chorion has inked new license deals for its classic book series Mr. Men and Little Miss by Roger Hargreaves.   Under these new agreements Chorion will work with the licensees to develop apparel and accessories collections for juniors and young adults:

  • Briefly Stated will introduce Mr. Men and Little Miss sleepwear and underwear for back-to-school 2007, followed by a line of men’s boxers, underwear, sleepwear and robes.
  • ES Originals will unveil its collection of fashion stationery, handbags, totes and backpacks that features Mr. Men and Little Miss for back-to-school 2007.
  • Freeze is also set to launch merchandise based on the properties for fall 2007, including fashion t-shirts.
  • NTD Apparel is Chorion’s exclusive fashion licensee for Canada. NTD Apparel has already launched an assortment of designed t-shirts for men and juniors at department stores and independent retailers throughout Canada. For fall 2007, the company will launch a broader assortment of apparel including fleece, sleepwear, fashion tops and more for men and women.

A couple of Disney releases:

  • Buena Vista Home Video will release Jump In!, the original Disney Channel movie, on DVD April 3, 2007.
  • Hollywood Records will release Another Side, Corbin Bleu’s new CD, on May 1, 2007.

STONE SOUP

Radio Disney Super Star Fantasy Sweepstakes with actor/recording artist Corbin Bleu (of Jump In! and High School Musical fame) kicks off April 4, 2007.  Listeners can register to via the Radio Disney request line or by logging onto RadioDisney.com and entering the daily code word through April 22.  Additionally, listeners are invited to attend various local Radio Disney station events that will take place March 30  April 14.  These events will feature a range of activities including another chance at the grand prize.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Razor & Tie has upped Kevin O’Connor to VP, Kidz Bop L.L.C.  Most recently, O’Connor was Sr. Director.  Previously he founded Smart-Pants, Inc., served as a producer/writer/director on several toy and media projects and he began his career at Sesame Workshop as International Associate Producer for its series Ghostwriter.
