Liberty Media
has agreed to buy a 27.3 percent stake in the cable services provider Charter Communications for $2.6 billion. The companies made it official yesterday morning, with Liberty announcing it had entered into a definitive agreement with investment funds managed by or affiliated with Apollo, Oaktree Capital and Crestview Partners. Liberty, which owns shares in the Atlanta Braves, SiriusXM and Barnes and Noble, expects to fund the transaction by paying $95.50 per share in cash and new loan arrangements.
The deal, which gives Liberty a major stake in one of the largest cable providers in the United States, marks the first time media mogul John Malone has had ownership in a U.S. cable operator in nearly 20 years. Malone’s Tele-Communications Inc. was the largest cable operator in the country until he sold it in the 1990s.
