2010 UPFRONT: SYFY

Yesterday at New York City’s MoMA, the network celebrated its first anniversary of its worldwide brand transformation from Sci Fi Channel to Syfy, and revealed its slate of new series as well as it’s reality programs in development. Syfy also introduced to the ad community attending the new results-focused advertising metric, The Syfy *Effect, promoting the network’s collaborative sales approach and showcasing its successful ad partnerships this past year.

Syfy also made a handful of announcements about new and returning series:

  • Syfy premieres new one-hour reality series Mary Knows Best (wt) on July 15 at 9p. The six-episodes series follows well-known psychic and mother of three, Mary Occhino as she manages a successful career including being host of Sirius Satellite Radio’s daily show Angels on Call and juggling her large Italian-American family based on Long Island. Atlas Media Corp produces with production beginning this spring. This show is described as “The Osbournes for the sci fi enthusiasts!”
  • Syfy okayed a second reality program slated to debut on July 15, as the 60m new series Paranormal Investigators (wt) will launch at 10p. The series will travel through the web and the world to uncover the truth behind intriguing and unexplained supernatural phenomena caught on camera. Production begins this spring from BASE Productions along with Sci Fi Channel Europe.
  • Together, the new series Mary Knows Best and Paranormal Investigators will make up a new reality block on Thursday nights from 9-11p. Later on, the series Beast Legends from Yap Films, which investigates mythical monsters will join the reality block.
  • Additionally, Syfy ordered a 90-minute pilot titled Three Inches penned by Harley Peyton (Twin Peaks).  The action-adventure/fantasy project is about Walter, an unmotivated daydreamer who after being struck by lightning develops a “super” power trick where he can move any object three inches by using his mind. He is recruited by an unlikely band of superheroes. Fox Television Studios is producing along with Landscape Entertainment.
  • Syfy also announced it renewed the reality series Destination Truth for a fourth season. Host Josh Gates will journey with viewers around the world in eight new episodes scheduled to premiere this fall. Destinations for the new season include Madagascar, Tanzania, Guam, Kenya and Cambodia. Season three of Destination Truth opens tonight at 10p with a look at the impish leprechaun in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Ping Pong Productions produces the series.
  • Finally, Tracy Morgan (NBC’s 30 Rock) will be back as host for Syfy’s prank series Scare Tactics. Production of 13 new episodes comprising season four has started and the series is slated to premiere this fall.

Syfy’s new reality series in development:

  • Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen – Chef and molecular gastronomist Marcel Vigneron (Top Chef) uses the science of cooking as his event and catering company are hired to produce food for a special event or celebration. Produced by Intuitive Entertainment.
  • Force of Nature – Series follows Feng Shui master, Ariel Towne as he helps clients with a combination of new and ancient practices. Evolution Media produces.
  • The Latimer Project – Series is about Jason Latimer, a three-time World Champion of Magic and owner of Latimer Corp., an illusion design firm. Jason and his team create mind-boggling illusions for their client roster. Pilgrim Films is producing.
  • Mr. Impossible – Docu-soap follows rogue inventor, Denzo Molnar known as Mr. Impossible as he solves problems involving technology. Produced by Story house Productions.
  • Paranormal Files – People who have lived through extraordinary paranormal experiences are profiled in this drama/docu-series from the creative team of Dimitri Doganis and Bart Layton (Locked Up Abroad). Produced by Raw TV.
  • Face Off – Competition series involving the world of special effects make-up artists. Produced by Mission Control.
  • The Dome Experiment – Twelve test subjects from various walks of life will enter “The Dome,” a sealed bio-environment where they must rely on each other for their daily needs. Produced by 3 Ball Productions.
  • Untitled Artifact Search Series – Action/adventure series spans the globe in search of some of history’s most storied relics and artifacts. Mission Control produces.

Centric introduces viewers to media guru Tracey Ferguson in the new reality series Keeping Up with the Joneses, debuting April 8 at 8p. This eight-episode series, produced by Film Garden, will follow Editor-in-Chief Ferguson, the founder and manager of Jones magazine, a national high society and fashion publication catering to African-American women in the Houston area.

MTV approved a new docu-series titled MTV Hired following recent college grads as they pursue employment in today’s tough economic environment. MTV ordered 20 episodes of the series, premiering May 6. The series Silent Library was also renewed for a third season with 20 episodes.

Nielsen released more information about the growing habit of television viewers surfing the web, visiting Google, Yahoo! or Facebook, while watching major events. During the recent Super Bowl, 47.40% of the US population tuned in to the game while 14.50% of those viewers also went online. Furthermore during last week’s Academy Awards presentation, 29.10% of the US popular watched on TV and nearly half or 13.30% also went online.

HBO’s WWII miniseries The Pacific opened Sunday night, attracting 3.1 million total viewers. This equates to a +22% increase over the premiere of HBO’s last historic miniseries John Adams.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Hallmark Channel picked up the exclusive license for US television rights to a variety of lifestyle programming emanating from the library of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSLO). This programming acquisition will establish a new seven-hour daytime block of home and lifestyle programming on Hallmark Channel starting March 29 from 11a to 6p. This new daytime block begins prior to the September premiere of exclusive original episodes of The Martha Stewart Show. Hallmark Channel’s daytime programming lineup includes episodes from such shows as From Martha’s Kitchen, From Martha’s Home and From Martha’s Garden. Other titles that could be included, though are not yet scheduled are Petkeeping with Marc Morrone, early seasons of Everyday Food, Martha Stewart Living and various specials. Also beginning April 3-4, a three-hour block of MSLO episodes will air on Saturdays and Sundays. Hallmark Channel’s primetime and weekend line-up will continue to serve up Hallmark Channel Original Movies, specials, Hallmark Hall of Fame films and other acquired series.

Debmar-Mercury said talk show The Wendy Williams Show has been renewed in 80% of the US, including 18 of the top 20 markets and 37 of the top 40 markets. Stations owned by Lin, Tribune, Local TV, Sinclair, Raycom and Granite as well as Fox Television Stations have reupped the show through 2012.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

AMC begins production on its third original drama series Rubicon on March 29. The conspiracy thriller stars James Badge Dale, currently seen on HBO’s The Pacific. The one-hour, 13-episode Rubicon will premiere this summer and is produced by Warner Horizon Television. Other cast members include Miranda Richardson, Dallas Roberts, Jessica Collins, Christopher Evan Welch, Lauren Hodges and Arliss Howard.

Natalie Morales (USA’s White Collar) joins NBC’s comedy Parks and Recreation in a recurring role, playing Lucy, a smart and funny girl who works in a bar in Pawnee, Indiana.

New premium cable network, EPIX okayed a single-camera comedy from Larry Charles, cites THR. The project is a satirical comedy about a fictional Silicon Valley CEO who has a larger-than-life ego. The comedy is being developed with Media Rights Capital; Charles will direct the pilot and manage the development of the writing by Dan Lyons, creator of the Fake Steve Jobs.

Paula Abdul is discussing with ABC the possibility of being part of the network’s remake of Star Search. Abdul would likely join the show as a judge for the new rendering of the classic talent competition show.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX was the leader Saturday night among A18-49 at 2.1/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX and its double dose of Cops episodes averaged a winning 2.2/8 during 8p followed by NBC’s encore of Parenthood at 0.8/3. FOX led again through 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 2.1/7 with CBS’ second helping of Crimetime Saturday next at 1.2/4. CBS then assumed the top spot at 10p with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.6/6 with NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat following at 1.2/4.

Sunday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS was the overall champ Sunday night with the A18-49 viewers at 2.8/8, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos won at 7p with a 1.9/6, with CBS’ 60 Minutes close in second at 1.8/6 and NBC’s new game show Minute To Win It premiering in third at 1.5/5. At 8p, CBS’ The Amazing Race zipped to first place with a 3.0/9 with FOX’s two The Simpsons episodes averaging a 2.5/7 at #2 and NBC’s second installment of Minute To Win It in third at 2.4/7. CBS topped during 9p with Undercover Boss at 3.9/10 followed by ABC’s Desperate Housewives at 3.7/9 and tying for third place was NBC’s season opener of The Celebrity Apprentice and FOX’s combo of Family guy and new comedy Sons of Tucson at 2.8/7 each. FOX’s Sons of Tucson delivered a 2.1/5 at 930p. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

E! Entertainment added Bruce Perlmutter in the newly created position of SVP/News and Online. Bruce will head the network’s news division across all platforms including E! News, Daily 10, E! Online and E! News Now. He will manage the production and daily operations for the division in addition to news gathering and reporting. Bruce reports to Suzanne Kolb, President/Marketing, News and Online, E! Entertainment and The Style Network.

FishBowl Worldwide Media, formed by Vin Di Bona and Bruce Gersh, hired Susan Levison as SVP/Creative Affairs. Susan will be in charge of creative development for all platforms involving scripted and unscripted franchises for worldwide television, film and digital distribution. In her new role, Susan will report to Bruce Gersh, President/CEO. Most recently, Susan worked for FOX Broadcasting Company where she was SVP/Comedy Development.

Here Media elevated Mark Smelzer as VP/Publisher for the Advocate and Gay.com brands. Based at the company’s Los Angeles office, Mark will continue establishing and executing multi-platform efforts for clients wishing to target the gay and lesbian market.

Independent, global agency La Comunidad named Darren Himebrook as Director/Interactive Production where he will oversee and produce digital work for the agency’s clients such as Crown and Best Buy. Additionally, the agency tapped Carla Poumian-Ruiz as Senior Account Director where she will lead the accounts Remy Martin, Crown and Best Buy.
