Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 15, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

After 43 years and several minutes in the same job, Mike Wallace who is creeping up on his 88th birthday, has announced he will step back – but not entirely.  Even so, that news will effectively put to bed the 60 Minutes campaign of years ago that read – What four words strike fear in the hearts of con men and rogues?  Mike Wallace is here.   Wallace said he has often been asked when he would call it a day, and his response: “‘I’ll retire when my toes turn up.”  In a statement released yesterday he said his toes are “just beginning to curl a trifle”.  Wallace won’t disappear altogether – he returns next season as correspondent emeritus as he concludes stories already in the works.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *The March 12 HBO season premiere of The Sopranos was the top cable program of the week, among both pay and basic, with 5.9 million viewers and earning a 5.3 national HH Rtg.  Among total viewers, The Sopranos was #1 for the week with 9.5 million viewers.

BET‘s Lil’ Kim:  Countdown to Lockdown debuted on March 9 with 1.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, making it BET’s most-watched series debut in the network’s history.  It also puts the debut at the top of the Original Series on Cable among Black households thus far this year. Lil’ Kim airs Thursdays at 930p.

AOL launches today its new classic Tv service called In2TV where you can watch free episodes of shows like Babylon 5, Growing Pains, La Femme Nikita, F Troop, Sisters and Pinky & the Brain.

NBC‘s new series Heist is getting a sneak peak on MSN Video.  The 16-minute preview began airing yesterday on MSN and will be available right up to the March 22 premiere of the series.   Additionally, the first two episodes air, they will also be available online.

iTunes and CBS are going to make it easy for you to catch up on your missed NCAA Tournament games – they will be condensed and available for download ($1.99 per game), one day after the game is played.  An iTunes option is to purchase a Season Pass for $19.99 which will automatically download for you all 63 condensed games.  As for semifinals and the championship game – they will also be available but in full length format. And if that’s not enough, you can pick up a compilation download from CBS Sports and Thought Equity featuring the best shots and most memorable moments from past tournaments.

News from the opener of Nielsen Media Research‘s National Client Meeting in Orlando: In April, the company will launch a panel of People Meter households in order to measure Engagement with TV shows and commercials to determine which engagement metric they should adopt for TV going forward.  The Engagement Project surveys participants to gauge their connection between the commercials they’ve seen and their awareness, attitude and recall toward brands and products.

The second season of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations will return to Travel Channel on March 27 at 9p with a two-hour premiere. The show regularly airs Mondays from 10-11p.

The HorseTV Channel is premiering its new series Rodeo Nation: Pushing The Barrier on Sunday, March 19 at 8p. The first season features six competitions from the PRCA Dodge Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals, following contestants as try to qualify for the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho. Rodeo Nation will air weekly through May.

MTV is premiering its new trash-talking comedy competition — Yo Momma –created, executive produced and hosted by Wilmer Valderrama, on April 3 at 6p. The new show, which features celeb guests from the hip-hop and comedy worlds as judges, will air weekdays.

Sci Fi’s new original half-hour reality series Psychic At Large, starring psychic Char Margolis, premieres March 29 at 10p.

Discovery Channel’s second season of Deadliest Catch premieres March 28 at 9p, returning to the Bering Sea where crab fishermen do one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC‘s Men in Trees with Anne Heche has added John Amos to the cast.  Production begins in Vancouver next week.

CBSuntitled medical drama starring Mark Feuerstein as an up-and-coming brain surgeon, and working with an unpredictable surgeon and mentor.  Dylan McDermott was originally cast as the mentor when the project was in development a year ago. That role has since been recast with Stanley Tucci.

NBC‘s comedy pilot Community Service starring Jay Mohr, has cast Brittany Daniel to co-star.

ABC‘s A Day in the Life which follows a couple of their wedding day, has added Marla Sokoloff as the bride.  It was announced just yesterday that Josh Cooke would play the groom.

Jack will serve as the network’s chief liaison to the music industry, and will continue to oversee events and specials. He’ll also help identify music-related content for wireless and the Internet.

Philippe Maigret becomes SVP/Distribution Strategy and Portfolio Development for Buena Vista International Television, reporting to Laurie Younger, President. Philippe will relocate to Burbank effective June 1, and will identify and support the development of strategic distribution opportunities and new business models across TV and new technology platforms, as well as overseeing BVITV’s Portfolio Development on an international basis. Maria Kyriacou is also advanced to VP/Portfolio Development Group, reporting to Tom Toumazis, EVP/Managing Director, BVITV EMEA. Maria will be responsible for driving Portfolio Development Group activity in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Vincent McCarthy has been named National Sales Manager for WCBS-TV. Vincent returns to his native New York to assume his new post March 27.

Marsha E. Williams has been promoted to SVP/Research and Planning, Nickelodeon Network.  Marsha oversees Consumer Insights for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr., including all brand, programming and production, merchandising, public affairs, online and other corporate consumer research. Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS led Monday night with a  5.0/13 A18-49 according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was #2 with a 4.4/11.  At 8p NBC led the pack with a 5.2/14 for Deal or No Deal.  Over on CBS the 830p premiere of The New Adventures of Old Christine was #2 with a 3.9/10. At 9p Fox took the lead with 5.7/13 for 24, while the second episode of Old Christine at 930p delivered a 4.8/11. At 10p CBS pulled a 6.2/16 for CSI: Miami, beating NBC’s Medium with a 3.9/10.
