Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Golf Channel revealed its programming plans for the LPGA this year, with nearly 300 hours of original coverage that includes all North American weekend telecasts aired live as well as production features designed to spotlight LPGA stars. That marks an increase of 22% of tournament coverage over last year. The season starts this week from Phoenix at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup and will also include pro-am shows from three tournaments – Kraft Nabisco Championship (April 4-7), Manulife Financial LPGA Classic (July 11-14) and CME Group Titleholders (Nov. 21-24). Last year’s coverage saw a 68% ratings uptick over the past two seasons of domestic tournaments.

Team USA’s win over Canada on Sunday in the 2013 World Baseball Classic marked the most-watched non-Postseason game ever on MLB Network, drawing 760,000 viewers to the channel, according to Nielsen. That is up 26% from the previous high, a New York Yankees/Boston Red Sox game on October 2, 2012, and peaked with 1.25 million viewers during the final innings. Although that score is down from the comparable game on a more widely-distributed ESPN, the contest, combined with 14 other WBC telecasts, still bolstered the network to its most-watched weekend ever, drawing an average of252,000 viewers from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10.

Speaking of records, FOX Soccer’s telecast of Manchester United’s 2-2 tie with Chelsea in the FA Cup Round 6 on Sunday afternoon ranked as the network’s most-watched FA Cup match ever, according to Nielsen. 460,000 viewers saw the match-up, which scored as the fifth most-watched contest of any kind in FOX Soccer history.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will officially part ways with the Big East this year, reaching a deal with the conference to depart for the ACC two years early starting July 1. Louisville is still set to join the ACC for the 2014-15 season.

Turner Sports could be carrying the NCAA’s Final Four and national championship game as early as 2014, according to the New York Times, instead of 2016, which was originally planned as part of the company’s deal with CBS Sports. Discussions are ongoing.

The Professional Bowlers Association locked in a deal with CBS Sports Network that features a series of five telecasts originating from the new GEICO PBA Summer Swing in Milwaukee in June. The deal will include five two-hour telecasts that wraps up concludes with a GEICO PBA Summer King of the Swing special event featuring the top five competition points leaders from the Summer Swing events. Programming begins Tuesday, June 11 at 7p.

FOX Sports Media Group entered a new multi-year television deal with ECAC Lacrosse. The NCAA Division I conference will see the ECAC Lacrosse semifinals on Thursday, May 2 at 5p and 8p, and finals on Saturday, May 4 at 4p with games also available on FUEL TV and FOX College Sports. Starting in 2014, the ECAC Lacrosse tournament will air on FOX Sports 1, with FSMG given the opportunity to televise a new Game of the Week series.

The X Games are dropping the snowmobile and Moto X best trick competitions, according to USA Today after Caleb Moore died due to injuries from his sled while performing a backflip. The X Games still plans to hold other snowmobile events at Winter X, as well as motorcycle competitions at Summer X.

Halfway through the abbreviated 2013 NHL season, MSG Networks’ announced that its ratings for New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders telecasts are all trending upward. Through 21 games on MSG Networks (MSG and MSG+), Rangers telecasts are averaging a 1.80 household rating, up 82% compared to the 2011-12 season final average. Through 24 games, Devils telecasts have averaged a 0.55 household rating, up 67% compared to last year, while 24 Islanders matches have averaged a 0.47 household rating, up 124%.

IMG College announced that coverage of this year’s Men’s and Women’s Conference championships and NCAA Basketball Tournament will feature more than 150 game broadcast on IMG Audio Network. New to IMG’s tournament productions this year will be Bracket Guru Mark Friedinger, who will offer updated bracket projections and commentary every day starting today.

David Newman, Vice President of Analytics for CSE will appear on Bloomberg TV’s Sportsfolio show today to unveil the CSE-produced Bloomberg Sportfolio/Horrow Sports Ventures 2013 Power 100 ranking of the most powerful professional athletes in the United States. This marks the fourth year of the Power 100 whose rankings are based 50 percent on “off-field” measurements, and 50 percent on “on-field” performance using a variety of industry statistics. The episode will air tonight at 9:30p.

Sponsorship & Promotion

It appears that there will be no title sponsor for college football’s new championship series, which is slated to begin in 2014, according to ESPN. Executive Director Bill Hancock said “It won’t be ‘The Vizio Championship Tournament. The Final Four doesn’t have one. The Masters doesn’t. The Super Bowl. That’s the kind of event we have.”

Belvedere Vodka is now The Official Vodka of the PGA Championship (I know it helps my swing) in a new deal that runs through 2015. The sponsorship will include an integrated campaign that features advertising, social and digital media activation, as well as country club parties, promotional programs and consumer experiential programs at the PGA Championship.

Shoe and apparel brand AND1 announced that it will provide youth basketball apparel and donate seed money to help rebuild the St. Francis de Sales summer basketball program in Belle Harbor, New York. The outdoor basketball courts were destroyed during Super Storm Sandy last October 29th. The $5,000 donation will help push a new campaign designed to raise $100,000 to fully restore the damaged grounds and basketball courts.
