CBS handed a second season renewal to reality series Undercover Boss for the 2010-2011 broadcast season. Undercover Boss made its debut after the Super Bowl with 38.7 million viewers, the most ever for a new series launch following the Super Bowl. This premiere also has the distinction of being the largest series opener since 1987 and the most-watched premiere episode of any reality series. Additionally this season, Undercover Boss averages 18.7 million viewers along with an average rating/share of 7.1/17 among A18-49 and an 8.0/17 with A25-54.

Charlie Sheen, star of CBS’ Two and a Half Men will resume taping the sitcom on March 19, confirmed his rep yesterday. On February 22, Sheen checked into a rehab facility “as a preventative measure.”  To date, 18 episodes of Two and a Half Men have been produced out of a 24-episode order from Warner Bros. Television.

FOX announced upcoming dates for new and returning series premieres and finales:
May 19: The Good Guys (series preview) at 8p
May 27: So You Think You Can Dance (season premiere) at 8p
May 28: Past Life (summer premiere) at 8p
June 7: Lie To Me (summer premiere) at 8p; The Good Guys (series premiere) at 9p
June 8: Glee (season finale) at 9p
June 10: Hell’s Kitchen (season premiere) at 8p

ABC opted to move its drama Castle back on Monday nights after a one-week experimental move to Sundays in the Brothers & Sisters time period. ABC decided the show is better off following Dancing with the Stars on Mondays. Castle will air a two-part episode then on March 22 and March 29.

Andy Whitfield, star of the freshman drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand on Starz was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, halting series production. Whitfield’s condition is described as “very treatable” since the cancer was caught in the early stages and he is expected to begin treatment immediately. Season two production for Spartacus was scheduled to start filming in New Zealand.

A&E Network opens the new original real-life series Runaway Squad on April 5 at 10p with a special one-hour episode. The seven-episode series follows former NYPD detective Joe Mazzilli and his team of private investigators as they locate, rescue and reunite runaway teens with their families. Following the premiere episode, A&E will air back-to back 30m episodes each week. ITV Studios produces for A&E.

Syfy set the date for the second season US television premiere of Merlin for April 2 at 10p directly after the spring season premiere of Stargate Universe at 9p. Prior to its launch, Syfy will air all 13 episodes from the first season of Merlin in a day-long marathon on March 28 at 10a-11p.

RTV premiered the new original series Tail Fins and Chrome last Sunday, a show targeting car enthusiasts and collectors. Tail Fins and Chrome is a 30m weekly series showcasing classic cars and stories about their appreciative owners. The series is produced by Tail Fins and Chrome Entertainment, LLC and distributed by Tampa-based Riverbank Studios.

Telemundo’s Monday premiere of novela Donde Esta Elisa attracted 826,000 A18-49 viewers and 1.3 million total viewers.

Also on Monday, ABC Family’s spring season finale of Make It or Break It at 9p pulled in 1.5 million and a 1.6 rating with P12-34 as well as 2.5 million total viewers.

MTV’s frosh season finale of My Life as Liz posted a 1.4 rating with P12-34 and a 2.6 rating with F18-24 in addition to 1.3 million total viewers.

NCC Media reupped its partnership with online advertising and promotion company Premium Network, Inc. NCC Media will now represent PremiumChannels.com, serving up 45 unique category channels from entertainment to business and women to tweens and more.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

New daily entertainment news talk show Access Hollywood Live, making its debut this September, was picked up by the Fox Television Stations group in six markets. The one-hour show will air on KDFW/Dallas-Fort Worth, KRIV/Houston, WJBK/Detroit, WTVT/Tampa, KMSP/Minneapolis-St. Paul and WHBQ/Memphis. In an earlier announcement, Access Hollywood Live was sold to several of the NBC Local Media stations.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Recent Academy Award-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe will next appear on the Showtime series The Big C starring Laura Linney as a mother, wife and teach diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sidibe will have a recurring role, playing an obnoxious student in Linney’s class. Production begins in May for The Big C with a planned summer roll-out. The series is produced by Original Film and Sony Pictures Television.

Sendhil Ramamurthy (NBC’s Heroes) is jumping to USA Network’s new drama series Covert Affairs in a regular role playing a CIA agent. Covert Affairs is a spy drama starring Piper Perabo.

HBO cast Kevin Dunn, Kerry Condon and Tom Payne for its horse racing and gambling drama pilot Luck headlined by Dustin Hoffman. The premium network is also in talks with Nick Nolte to join the pilot. This move for Nolte would mark his first TV project since the 1976 miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.

In more casting news, per THR, Dania Ramirez (NBC’s Heroes) was tapped for a recurring role on HBO’s seventh season of Entourage, playing Alex a new love interest for Turtle (Jerry Ferrara); Lennie James landed a recurring role on HBO’s Hung as a potential love interest to Tanya (Jane Adams); and Kenny Johnson (Saving Grace) joins FX’s Sons of Anarchy, reprising the character Kozik in a recurring role.

BET announced broadcast journalist Ed Gordon will return to BET Networks’ news division, appearing on several news programs and specials.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX resumed its usual top berth place Saturday night at 1.9/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX won at 8p with a double dose of Cops averaging a 2.0/7 followed by CBS’ Crimetime Saturday repeat at 1.0/4. FOX had a second round of good luck during 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at #1 with 1.8/6 while CBS’ second Crimetime Saturday was #2 with 1.1/4. Then at 10p, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU encore tied for first place at 1.4/5 each with UNIV’s Sabado Gigante was next at 0.9/3.

The final Barbara Walters Special on ABC at 7p won with a 3.6/10 followed by NBC’s Dateline rerun at 1.2/4. ABC was #1 during 8p with a combo of the Oscar’s Red Carpet special and the opening of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards at 9.3/24 followed by CBS’ The Amazing Race at 2.6/6. ABC’s telecast of the Oscars ruled at 9p with 13.8/32 while the duo of Family Guy repeats on FOX came next at 2.7/6. ABC was rock solid through 10p with the Oscars coverage at 13.7/34 with UNIV’s En Nombre del Amor and Imagenes de Impacto averaging a second place at 1.8/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Kim Norris advanced to EVP/Advanced Advertising Strategy and Operations with Rainbow Advertising Sales Corp. In this new position, Kim will be involved with developing and implementing business and operational strategies for advanced advertising products created through Cablevision’s advanced technology and platforms. Kim will work closely with the company’s product development teams and other third party technology partners.

MTV tapped Randy Sosin as SVP/Talent Development and Programming where he will develop new and existing relationships with talent across multi-genres including music, comedy, celebrity, film and television to benefit the MTV brand. Based at MTV’s Santa Monica office, Randy will report to Tony DiSanto, President/Programming, MTV.

Everwell TV, airing in doctors’ waiting rooms nationwide, hired Sean Kelley as Online Content Manager for the network’s consumer website Everwell.com. Previously, Sean was with Time Inc. where he served as Senior Editor and helped re-launch Health.com.

Meg Lavigne was named VP/Sales and Strategy with Litton News Source. Meg will supervise and sell current news product in addition to developing new business for the News Source unit. Litton News Source’s current produce list includes Consumer Reports and Good Housekeeping Reports among other titles. Most recently, Meg was VP/GM at WUPA/Atlanta, the CBS O&O television station.

Michelle Stuart was upped to VP/Marketing with Bright House Networks for the Tampa Bay Division. In her new role, Michelle will oversee all marketing efforts for the company’s operations in the Tampa Bay area. Michelle will report directly to Michael Robertson, Division President.
