~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Announced at a press conference yesterday in Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee granted NBCUniversal the US television rights to the next four Olympic Games through 2020.  The agreement has NBCU paying $4.4 billion for the rights to continue being the US media home of the major global sporting event.  FOX and ABC/ESPN also submitted bids for the Olympics.

Upfront Update:  As of last Friday, The CW completed its upfront advertising sales by reportedly taking in $400 million to $420 million.   These figures are up from last year’s estimate of around $375 million.  The CW sold about 75% to 80% of its ad inventory for the fall season, apparently coming in at +11% with price increases. 

A new one-on-one combat show, One Man Army premieres on Discovery Channel July 13 at 10p.  The competition series pits four tough humans coming from elite military divisions to experts in extreme sports and law enforcement in three separate challenges of speed, strength and intelligence and after eliminations, one will stand alone as the winner of a $10,000 prize and the title of One Man Army.  Mykel Hawke, US Army Special Forces veteran and former Green Beret hosts the series produced by Renegade 83.

Later this month, Discovery Channel airs a sneak preview of a limited series it commissioned, Life on a Wire June 22 at 10p.  The series profiles Nik Wallenda and his acrobatic family known as The Flying Wallendas.  RealativityREAL produces the series.  More episodes of the series will air later this year. 

Last Sunday, Bravo aired the season six finale of The Real Housewives of Orange County tallying 2.88 million total viewers marking the highest-rated episode of the series.  In addition the conclusion drew in 1.86 million A18-49 which is the highest-rated episode of the season in this demo.  On the heels of these ratings results, Bravo also approved a fourth season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey and starting June 12 will move the edition to Sundays at 10p. 

Original series debut of Switched at Birth on ABC Family Monday at 9p has become the network’s #1 series premiere ever among total viewers with 3.3 million; A18-34 with 1.0 million/1.5 rating; and A18-49 with 1.7 million/1.3 rating.  Factoring in an encore airing at 10p Monday, Switched at Birth brought in a total of 4.9 million unique total viewers that night. 

Animal Planet’s season premiere of Whale Wars last Friday at 9p attracted 1.27 million total viewers as well as 724,000 A25-54 viewers and 676,000 with A18-49. 

Part two of the two-part season conclusion of American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior Monday at 9p on Discovery Channel drew in 3.43 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Bounce TV picked up its third major distribution partner as Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. agreed to carry the network in ten markets when Bounce TV launches this fall.  The multi-year deal with Nexstar makes Bounce TV, the first over-the-air broadcast TV network for African-American audiences available in Little Rock, Rochester, NY, Jacksonville, Peoria/Bloomington, Beaumont and Monroe among other markets. 

Soon to depart FOX News, Glenn Beck and his Mercury Radio Arts multi-media production company launched GBTV, a live streaming video network.  On September 12, GBTV begins airing Beck’s new daily two-hour show at 5p and the network will house other original and licensed programming.  Also starting Tuesday and through the launch of Beck’s upcoming program, GBTV will feature a behind-the-scenes reality show about the start-up of GBTV.  The programs on GBTV will be shot in hi-def and available live or on-demand.  GBTV counts 80,000 paying subscribers currently.  Consumers are charged $4.95/month for access to Beck’s weekday 5p show or $9.95 for GBTV Plus which offers them the full lineup available on GBTV.  For a limited time, new customers can join GBTV at the $4.95/month rate. 

After coming in at #1 on last weekend’s box office results, X-Men: First Class was picked up by FX.  The network acquired the premiere rights to the latest installment in the X-Men franchise which will air in late 2013 or early 2014.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:   NBC slid into first place Saturday night winning the A18-49 viewers at 1.3/5, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Double repeat Cops episodes on FOX beat the competition at 8p with an average of 1.0/4 and NBC’s NHL Stanley Cup Final game #2 was #2 at 0.9/4.  At 9p, NBC’s NHL Stanley Cup game between Boston at Vancouver won by a narrow margin at 1.2/5 with FOX’s AMW: America Fights Back a close second at 1.2/4.  NBC skidded into a higher bracket during 10p with more of the NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 2 at 1.6/6 with CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery encore next at 1.0/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC had a slam-dunk on Sunday with a 5.0/15 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS won the 7p hour with a 60 Minutes encore at 1.3/5 followed by FOX with the average of repeat comedies American Dad and Bob’s Burgers at 1.1/4.  ABC was the leader the remainder of the night in primetime with its NBA Finals Game 3: at 8p ABC posted a 5.0/17 while Univision’s Copa Oro 2011 was #2 at 1.8/6.  Same scenario at 9p as ABC’s NBA Finals topped with a 6.3/17 and Univision’s Copa Oro 2011 was next at 2.4/7.  ABC’s ratings for the NBA Finals Game 3 rose to a 7.6/20 through 10p while NBC’s America’s Got Talent rebroadcast trailed in second place at 1.5/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 Roma Khanna becomes President/Television Group and Digital with MGM joining from NBCUniversal where she had been President/Universal Networks International and Digital Initiatives.  At MGM, Roma will oversee television sales, production acquisitions, licensing, content production and digital efforts for MGM globally.  Additionally, she will manage all current franchises and partnerships as well as identify the development of new franchise and content opportunities via the MGM library and IP.  Roma will report jointly to Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairmen/CEOs. 

Gail Ockerbloom Freeman named VP/Marketing and Communications with The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, starting next Monday.  Gail will work in tandem with IHI’s senior management and other teams in charge of marketing, public relations, publications, knowledge management and its website to develop and spur strategic goals.

MediaComm, the production/post production unit of The Inspiration Networks, tapped Kris Binder as Director/Air Operations where he will head the Air Operations departments encompassing Traffic, Scheduling, Master Control and the Media Center.

ION Media Networks appointed three senior sales executives with all reporting to Lisa Fischer, SVP/Network Sales in New York:

  • Kendra Cleary hired as VP/National Sales for ION’s new office opening in Detroit;
  • Corry Hart as VP/National Sales to manage ION’s Chicago national ad sales office and supervise the Midwest region;
  • Laura Diefenbach promoted to VP/Network Sales East Coast for ION’s New York office.

Lee Davis hired by Univision Communications Inc. as EVP/Sales for Univision Radio.  In his new role, Lee will supervise all ad sales for Univision Local Media’s 70 radios stations across the US and Puerto Rico.  Based in New York, Lee reports to David Lawenda, President, Univision Ad Sales and Marketing and to Jose Valle, President, Univision Radio. 

Michael Vamosy, formerly of FOX Broadcasting, joined Stun Creative to head the company’s “Buster INK” team in the role of Executive Creative Director.  Michael reports to Jonas Morganstein, Buster’s CCO. 

The 4A’s revealed its 2011-2012 Board of Directors and Board Officers at its Board of Directors’ meeting yesterday at organization headquarters in New York City:

  • Chuck Porter, Chairman, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, LLC will continue as Chairman of the 4A’s Board of Directors.
  • Chris Weil, Chairman/CEO, Momentum Worldwide elected as Vice-Chairman.
  • Sharon Napier, CEO, Partners + Napier re-elected as Secretary-Treasurer for a two-year term from 2011-2013.
