CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

06/08/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, June 8, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing.

As you know, the Viacom Board of Directors are scheduled to meet at the end of this month to vote on splitting the company into two units – one led by led by Leslie Moonves and will include the broadcast networks and outdoor, the other by Tom Freston overseeing components include the cable networks and Paramount.  Also at that meeting, it is expected Shari Redstone, Sumner’s daughter, will be named Vice Chairman of Viacom, per Variety.  That sets up Shari to become the new Chairman once Sumner steps down.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Fox:  The Inside at 9p
NBC: Psychic Detectives at 8p

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

NBC Universal Television Studio has signed Gail Lerner to the standard 2-year, 7-figure, development deal.  As part of that deal, she will continue as co-exec prod of Will & Grace, while also development new projects.

20th has signed Reba’s exec producer Matt Berry to a 2-year development deal which will keep him at the helm of that show, in addition to creating new projects.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The debut of the second season of The 4400 on USA set a new all-time record for the network and for all basic cable original series thus far this calendar year among A18-49 (2.4 rtg) and A25-54 (2.9 rtg). On Sunday night 5.3 million viewers tuned in.

ABC Sports will continue carrying Pac-10 Conference football games through 2011.  The five year extension to its current agreement also provides for Pac-10 football games to be carried  for the first time since 1994 on ESPN, as well as other ESPN platforms including ESPNU (game re-airs), ESPN Classic (game re-airs), ESPN Mobile, ESPN Interactive, ESPN 360 (formerly ESPN Broadband), ESPN.com, ESPN Pay-Per-View, ESPN Video-on-Demand, ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes and more.

Also at ABC – insert Rodney back into your primetime schedule as of July 5, at 930p where it will resume its position after According to Jim.  Also, come August 9, Boston Legal is back Tuesdays at 10p, the same time period it is slated to run in the fall.

Discovery Channel has pared all the nominations down to a Top 25 Greatest Americans list and now we can vote.  Think American Idol without the singing.  Our voting will whittle the list down to the Top 5.  Want to know who’s on the list? Here you go: Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Billy Graham, Bob Hope, Eleanor Roosevelt, Elvis Presley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George W. Bush, George Washington, Henry Ford, John F. Kennedy, Lance Armstrong, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, Neil Alden Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, Ronald Reagan, Rosa Parks, Thomas Alva Edison, Thomas Jefferson, Walt Disney, Wright Brothers.  None of my top choices, but let’s not be nitpicky here. It’s the debate that matters. Vote at: aol.com/greatestamerican

Spike TV will debut its newest non-scripted series on July 22 at 10p called Super Agent.  This series will take a closer look into the process of a college athlete as he/she decides which sports agent should represent him/her.  It’s Arli$$ from the athlete’s POV. The athlete in mind is USC defensive end Shaun Cody, an early draft pick to the Detroit Lions who must choose between 9 agent wannabes.

She was Mrs. Robinson (1967).  She was Anne Sullivan (1962).  She was the Queen in Antz (1998).  She was even an extra in the church scene in Blazing Saddles (1974).  She was also Mrs. Mel Brooks.  Anne Bancroft passed away Monday at the age of 73 after losing her battle with cancer.   The lights on Broadway will be dimmed in her honor today.  Ms. Bancroft was lauded with numerous awards and nominations, most notably an Oscar and a Tony for The Miracle Worker, and Golden Globe awards for both The Graduate and The Pumpkin Eater (1964). Most recently, she had appeared on Broadway in 2002 in Edward Albee’s Occupant.

Note to self: if you ever find yourself wearing a wedding dress in the middle of Times Square, standing before a giant wedding cake just itching to jump into the cake in a mad-dash search for a $50,000 wedding coupon … let this thought first pass through your mind:  Mother-in-law.  Do you really want your future mother-in-law to see you covered with great globs of butter cream icing?  Think she’ll ever let you forget that visual, particularly if you don’t find the coupon?  Save yourself.  Elope.
