Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, June 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

And let the games begin!  Or at least let the Upfront begin

Broadcasters started writing the first of their upfront deals yesterday, and while it’s still probably too early to judge any CPM increases over last year’s sales, you can imagine all the networks will be looking for at least small year to year increases.  The CW was also involved writing deals yesterday, and is expected to be looking for rates at close to the WB rates from last year, when WB took in an estimated $650 million in upfront revenue. Overall expected Upfront sales for the 2006-07 season is approx $9 billion, basically flat with last year.

While the broadcasters are just getting things moving along, OMD and MTV Networks have just finished putting to bed a multi-network, multi-platform deal, as part of the 2006/2007 upfront season, estimated to be worth $300+ million.  Under the pact more than 30 OMD clients have combined their linear and digital ad budgets and will have the first go at advertising opportunities across MTVN’s range of screens, including TV, broadband, VOD, podcasting and wireless as well as its digital properties such as Neopets, Xfire, IFilm, and GameTrailers.com.  The deal is unique in that it is MTVN’s first upfront deal to incorporate many of its screen offerings in addition to its digital assets.

The debut of E!’s Simple Life: ‘Til Death Do Us Part on Sunday at 10p almost tripled the network’s primetime average with a 1.2 HH rating and 1.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen. The strongest demo was W18-34 which delivered a 1.6 rating. The program dropped E!’s median age by six years to 28, and it was the highest rated Sunday premiere in its time period and for a reality series premiere since August 2002.
 
Charles Gibson as the new face and anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight ranked #2 for his inaugural week – May 29-June 2 – averaging 7.2 million viewers over the four night week (Memorial Day is taken out of the avg). NBC Nightly News delivered an average of 8.0 million viewers, and CBS Evening News averaged 6.78 million. In the key A25-54 news demo, NBC led with 2.6 million viewers; followed by ABC with 2.4 million and CBS with 2.16 million.

RJ Cutler is back in primetime, this time with Donald Trump in tow.  The pair are busily developing the classic boardgame Monopoly for broadcast television, but not as a game show per se, but rather as a reality show, per Variety.  Consider Trump’s history in the real estate market and this begins to make real sense.  No broadcast network has signed on yet – tho the pair are reportedly visiting with all the mucky-mucks next week.

A full-page print ad for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart appearing in the June 5 edition of Hollywood Reporter reads:  “We had fake news years before CBS hired Katie Couric.”

So, were you among the handful of fans who have been wondering if ABC’s The Evidence will make it back into primetime before September? Then here’s good news for you – The Evidence rejoins the schedule for a limited engagement on Saturday nights starting this weekend, at 10p.  There are currently three unseen episodes which will air first.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Susan Levinson has been named SVP/Comedy Development at Fox, stepping in where Jeremy Gold left off after announcing his departure last May.  Reporting to Craig Erwich, EVP/Programming, Susan makes the move from the drama development side at Fox where she was VP.

Gary Goodman joins Lionsgate as EVP/Television Production, effective immediately. In this new position, Gary will oversee the production of all television projects, including dramas, comedies, movies, miniseries, limited series and reality programs, for both broadcast and cable.
 
The Yes Network has promoted Lisa Wagner to Director/Ad Sales, reporting to Steve Berman, SVP/Ad Sales. Her responsibilities will include sales and inventory management, creating sponsorship opportunities for the network’s clients in coordination with the sales team, developing promotional packages, research implementation and new business acquisitions.
 
Jerry Longarzo has been appointed EVP/Business and Legal Affairs at Fox Television Studios, where he will also supervise production. Most recently, Jerry was the SVP/Business and Legal Affairs at UPN.
 
Interep has named Mike Walsh as President/Cumulus Major Market Sales, the company’s newly renamed rep firm. Mike will manage the national sales and marketing for 24 Cumulus-owned radio stations in eight markets.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: NBC smashed the competition and swept Monday night with 4.9/14 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS came in second with 2.6/8, then FOX 1.8/5, ABC 1.6/5, WB 1.5/4, UNIV 1.4/4, UPN 0.8/2 and TELE 0.3/1. The finale of NBC’s Deal or No Deal started the network’s winning streak at 8p delivering a 4.9/16. At 9p, the last half-hour of Deal or No Deal and the first part of The Apprentice finale brought in a 5.5/15 avg for the network. The last hour of The Apprentice brought in a bonus at 10p with a 4.4/12.
