Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 30, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing. We’re breaking in a new server today, so hopefully the delays we’ve experienced the last couple of days are behind us.
Today at 12n Central Time, members of Don’t Count Us Out will gather to protest the Nielsen Media Research pending use of Local People Meters in the Chicago DMA. The gathering will take place outside the Wyndham Chicago Hotel where Susan Whiting, Nielsen CEO, is reportedly scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a summit of African American advertising specialists.
Unless you live on another planet, you’re probably aware Spider-Man 2 (Columbia Pictures) opened at 12am this morning. And yesterday Fox and cable sister net FX have picked up the television rights for the film which could end up going for approx $50 million in licensing fees. Generally films licensing fees are sold on a percentage of domestic box office, usually around 15%. Because of the huge box office of the first Spider-Man movie, in the $400 million neighborhood, the fees for this movie are reportedly capped at $50 million. Initially, the film will go to pay TV, airing on HBO, as a result of an output deal that will expire in January 2005. Then Fox and FX will share the film over a 10 year period, beginning in late 2006. During the first three years, the movie will air on Fox a maximum of 3 times, and multiple times on FX. Sony has also retained the right to license the film to a third outlet during a Fox/FX 10-year window, beginning in 2010. The first Spider-Man movie went to TBS/TNT and Fox for a reported $60 million.
You’ll remember this actor from Friends when he played Rachel’s assistant/boyfriend, Tag. Next fall, Eddie Cahill will join the cast of CSI-NY as an investigator/detective Don Flack. Also joining the cast will be Grant Albrecht as the DNA dept head.
CBS and NBC tied the night on Monday each posting a 3.3/10 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox followed with a 3.1/6, trailed by ABC 1.8/5, UPN 1.2/4 and WB 0.9/3. At 8pm NBC’s Fear Factor led with a 3.3/11. The CBS sitcoms delivered a 2.1/7, and North Shore on Fox earned a 2.0/6. At 9pm NBC again led with For Love or Money posting a 3.5/10, quickly followed by Raymond/Two & a Half Men 3.2/9. The Casino on Fox earned a 2.3/6. At 10pm CSI Miami was well out in front on CBS with a 4.5/13; NBC’s Who Wants to Marry My Dad ranked #2 for the hour with 3.1/9; and ABC’s Weddings found a 1.9/5.
From politics to TV host. A natural jump; happens all the time. This time it happened to the Rev. Al Sharpton. Spike TV‘s new career makeover series I Hate My Job has signed Sharpton as a “life counselor” along with California psychologist Stephanie Raye, to counsel 8 young men in pursuing careers that have some meaning for them. The show is formatted something like a game in that each week the men will have various tasks and challenges to complete, and a panel of judges will decide which of the group will continue to the next show. I Hate My Job is looking at a fall premiere.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of June 7-20, 2004. The list is ranked by viewer’s ability to recall the new ads and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. For example, with a Recall Index of 218, the top-ranked KFC’s spot was recalled more than two times the average new ad during the period.
