2010 Upfront Update: With the long holiday weekend over and the economy performing better, FOX is out of the gate first, writing deals with advertisers for the 2010-2011 season. Early reports say FOX is achieving low single-digit price increases for its primetime inventory. CBS reported they are in “active negotiations” and according to previous announcements from network executives, CBS is expecting price bumps of 10% plus for this year’s upfront. To date, ABC and NBC have not reported their upfront activity. Industry analysts are thinking this year’s upfront will be much stronger than last year’s where the networks dropped prices by single digits and overall sales declined by 10-15%. NBC is adding a new alternative series to its summer line-up as Breakthrough with Tony Robbins premieres July 27 at 8p. The series had been on NBC’s development slate for a while and did not appear on the network’s original summer schedule. The hour-long show from Reveille is described as an inspirational series where Robbins and his team of experts help the show’s participants and their families deal with challenges and personal obstacles with the goal to change their lives. National Geographic Channel has a packed summer schedule containing premieres of several new and returning series:
Nat Geo returning series include: Locked Up Abroad starting June 30 at 10p; Dangerous Encounters on July 30 at 9p; Explorer, cable television’s longest-running docu-series at 25 years opens August 10 at 10p; and Alaska State Troopers returns in September. Also of note, Nat Geo will debut the miniseries event, How the Earth Changed History over three nights with five hours starting June 20 at 8p. A&E Network will now launch its new original scripted drama series The Glades beginning July 11 at 10p. The police procedural, starring Australian actor Matt Passmore, Kiele Sanchez, Carlos Gomez and Michelle Hurd uses the fictional town of Palm Glade, FL as a backdrop. Fox Television Studios produces the series for A&E. Centric combines drama with music in its new reality series Keith Sweat’s Platinum House premiering June 28 at 8p. The series follows veteran producer and recording artist Keith Sweat as he works with the quartet comprising the R&B group Dru Hill along with their business manager Kevin Peck. Sweat will challenge the members of Dru Hill to complete the Platinum House boot camp and record their new album, InDRUpendence Day while in the process attempt to resurrect the brotherly closeness the foursome had before each pursued solo careers. WGBH/Boston is readying a new instructional woodworking television series for public television set to premiere this October. Rough Cut – Woodworking with Tommy Mac goes inside the workshop of fine furniture maker Tommy MacDonald and over thirteen episodes viewers will go along with MacDonald as he visits historical landmarks in New England to gain inspiration for new projects. He then returns to his workshop to demonstrate how to finish various woodworking projects. The series is produced by WGBH Boston and distributed by American Public Television. Woodcraft is the show’s exclusive corporate sponsor. Monday’s Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final posted record-breaking overnight ratings for NBC Sports’ coverage at 4.1/7, marking a 21% increase over the previous year’s Game 2 ratings results. NBC’s Stanley Cup Final Game 2 also won the night among A18-49 at 2.4/7 E!’s second season finale of Kendra Monday night at 10p attracted more than 1.6 million total viewers.
