The annual GRAMMY Awards broadcast remains on CBS for another decade through 2021.  CBS signed a new deal with The Recording Academy extending their relationship involving the GRAMMY Awards’ broadcast that began in 1973.  The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards will air live on CBS February 12, 2012 at 8p from the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.  In addition, CBS will air The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!!  Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night, a one-hour live special on November 30.  CBS’ new Grammys agreement further includes a new two-hour series of Grammy specials which will be explained more in the future.

Two series premieres on tap for Discovery Channel:

  • Surviving The Cut 2 opens a second season next month following students as they go through grueling military Special Ops training in hopes they “survive the cut.”  The series produced for Discovery Channel by 2 Roosters debuts July 11 at 10p.
  • Two days later, the network brings back a sophomore season of Sons of Guns following gunsmith Will Hayden and his team of experts as they restore and create guns from a rare Civil War cannon to a twin M16 gun mount for a Navy special team’s boat gunner.  Produced by Jupiter Entertainment for Discovery Channel, Sons of Guns launches July 13 at 10p.

Tonight at 11p, national music TV network, Fuse part of The Madison Square Garden Company debuts Grammy Award winner CeeLo Green’s new series, CeeLo Green Talking to Strangers.  The show features Green interviewing artists and performances from specials guests such as Lupe Fasco, Keri Hilson, Train, Estelle, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals among others.

On Saturday at 10p, OWN premieres new one-hour series Carson Nation following Carson Kressley as travels the country making over individuals using his sense of fashion and style along with his over-the-top personality.

The anticipated comeback of Keith Olbermann on Current TV in his new show, Countdown With Keith Olbermann bowed on Monday at 8p averaging 179,000 viewers among A25-54.   Countdown did better than CNN’s In the Arena at 8p which netted 89,000 viewers though did not best his former network MSNBC’s 8p program, Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell which averaged 237,000 total viewers.  Olbermann’s new show was a boost for Current TV which averaged only 30,000 viewers in primetime during the first quarter.

HBO averaged 3.9 million total viewers for double airings of its Game of Thrones first season finale episodes on Sunday at 9p and the 1115p encore.  Specifically, the 9p finale tallied 3.0 million total viewers and an additional 876,000 viewers watched the 1115p rebroadcast.

Father-daughter duo Ryan and Tatum O’Neal’s new OWN series Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals premiered on Sunday at 10p with 470,000 total viewers and a 0.30 rating among W25-54.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Just days after opening nationwide in theaters, FX acquired the premiere rights to Green Lantern and Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  Green Lantern, from Warner Bros. Pictures finished first at the domestic box office last weekend at $53.2 million while Fox’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins came in third with $18.4 million.  FX is on a movie pick-up roll after completing recent deals for X-Men: First Class, Super 8 and The Hangover Park II as well as Disney’s Tron: Legacy, Sony’s The Green Hornet and Paramount’s Rango

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Lost alum Terry O’Quinn landed a recurring role on CBS’ Hawaii Five-O playing a Navy Seal Lt. Commander who trained Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin).

Long-running CBS drama Criminal Minds keeps its lead actor Thomas Gibson as negotiations were finalized for Gibson to remain on the show for two more years.  The deal was completed in the nick of time as production on the show’s seventh season begins in two weeks.

HBO’s True Blood added Scott Foley to its cast roster, cites TVLine.  Foley was cast in a major recurring role though his character will not appear until the season four finale and, if True Blood gets a renewal notice, Foley’s character will continue into the fifth season.  Foley will play Patrick, a tough former army buddy of Terry’s (Todd Lowe) who comes for a visit.  Foley is also expected to continue playing Teddy on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy since the production schedules of the two shows do not conflict.  True Blood debuts season four this Sunday at 9p on HBO.

Josh Cooke joins Showtime’s Dexter for its sixth season playing the recurring role of Louis Greene, a new lab intern at Miami Metro and a friend to Masuka (C.S. Lee).

In more Showtime news, Griffin Dunne will play a world-renowned management consultant on the premium network’s new comedy House of Lies, per THR.  Dunne’s character will appear in multiple episodes working with Don Cheadle at his firm.
