CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

06/15/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, June 15, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

No startling news here – the Board of Directors for Viacom has unanimously voted to split the company into two parts: CBS Corp and Viacom Inc. CBS Corp. will include the CBS broadcast network and owned & operated station group, Paramount, King World, Infinity, Outdoor, Showtime and Simon & Schuster.  Viacom Inc. will include all of the cable networks and Paramount Pictures.  Redstone will remain at the top of both as Chairman, but will relinquish his CEO title.  That title goes to Leslie Moonves as CEO of CBS Corp.; and Tom Freston as CEO of Viacom Inc.  The deal will take some time to be finalized and undergo regulatory approval; all expected to be wrapped up by early next year.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Animal Planet: Buggin’ with Ruud at 8p
FX:  30 Days at 10p

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Fox News has re-signed Geraldo Rivera to a new 4 year deal as Correspondent-at-Large.  He will continue with his Saturday evening series, At Large.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Lifetime‘s sixth season debut of Strong Medicine last Sunday night at 9p pulled in 2.9 million total viewers, up from June 2004’s premiere by 25%, and averaged a 2.6 HH rtg, also up from last year by 18%. Both key female demos improved year to year as well:  W18-34 +63%, and W18-49 +25%.  Immediately following, Lifetime aired the season debut of Missing, which delivered 2.2 million total viewers, up from last year’s 1.9 million.

NBC Universal‘s syndicated series The Martha Stewart Show will debut this fall on September 12.  In Los Angeles, Martha will go head to head against Oprah at 3pm, airing on KNBC (Oprah airs on KABC).  Martha displaces Ellen which will move to 4p where Dr. Phil is currently scheduled.  Come fall though, Dr. Phil moves his office to KCBS.  But what about Naomi?

Exec Prod RJ Cutler’s newest undertaking debuts tonight on FX30 Days is an unscripted series where the person at the focus for each episode undergoes a 30 day test to see what it’s like to live in someone else’s shoes, be it to live on minimum-wage income (tonight’s premiere ep), to see what it would be like to live as a Muslim in America, or agree to undergo a strict anti-aging regimen/diet/lifestyle.  30 Days kicks off at 10p tonight.

Program Partners has cleared Da Vinci’s Inquest for fall 2005 in more than 90% of the country with several new stations signing up, including: WGN/Chicago; KXAS/Dallas; WJLA/Washington DC; KHOU/Houston; KMOV/St. Louis; WPXI/Pittsburgh; WBAL/Baltimore; KSWB/San Diego; WFSB/Hartford; WMC/Memphis; KSL/Salt Lake City and KOTV/Tulsa.

Court TV‘s coverage of the Michael Jackson verdict (Monday 5-5:15p) had 3.4 million viewers tune in – the largest ever for Court TV.  In the demos, Court delivered a 1.4 A18-49, 1.6 A25-54.  During the full 5-6p hour, the net averaged a 1.2 A18-49 and 1.4 A25-54, which it said ranked it at the top of all ad supported basic cable nets.

A total of 11 English-language networks and 2 Spanish-language networks carried the verdict on Monday.  The collective preliminary number of viewers for ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, Court TV, Headline News, E!, MTV, MTV2 was 28.1 million viewers for the time frame of 4:43p-6p.  The two Spanish language networks, Univision and Telemundo, collectively averaged 2.47 million viewers from 4:48p-530p.  Both sets of numbers are according to Nielsen Media Research National People Meter Sample and National Hispanic People Meter Sample.

TNT’s The Closer debuted Monday night at 9p and delivered 7.0 million total viewers 2+, making it the most watched (non sports) cable broadcast of the year thus far, surpassing last Friday night’s Into the West on the same network.  Amogn A18-49, The Closer had 2.57 million viewers tune in; and 3.0 million A25-54.

SciFi Channel has acquired the offnet limited series Firefly, a Joss Whedon series.  SciFi has picked up 14 eps, which includes 3 that never aired.  The series kicks off next month, coincidentally around the same time as Universal Pictures will release its new film Serenity, which is reported based on the Firefly series.

CMT will launch a new reality series on Friday, July 1 at 8p titled COWBOY U: TEXAS. This series showcases eight urbanites conforming to life as ranch cowboys with Rocco Wachman and bullrider Judd Leffew as their cowboy professors. Four men and women are given tasks ranging from barrel racing to mastering a live steer. Each is competing to prove they have what it takes to “outdo Mother Nature.”

According to figures provided by the NBA, 115 million viewers globally tuned into Game 2 of the NBA finals on ABC with more than 105 million viewers for Game 1 between the Spurs and the Detroit Pistons. The popularity of this particular match-up is attributed to the Spurs’ Manu Ginobili of Argentina, as well as seven other international players who are competing. 205 countries are televising the finals.

Emeril Lagasse will be featured regularly on the Shop at Home Network, showcasing products either bearing his name or that he has handpicked for use in the kitchen.  Three live specials exhibiting everything from food to cooking pans are scheduled to air in July, September and November, originating from Emeril’s kitchen. Emeril’s Sous chefs from his test kitchen will also be featured in selling the products.
