CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

06/14/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), the consumer products unit of Cartoon Network, has entered into an exclusive, long-term global master toy licensing deal with Mattel, Inc.  The deal covers multiple Cartoon Network properties and provides Mattel with the licensing rights to numerous toy and games categories (e.g. vehicles, action figures, playsets, role-play, board games, puzzles, and youth electronics) for the Cartoon Network brand and its K6-11 targeted shows.  The pact also provides Mattel with a first-look option of all newly created original series and programming.  The first toy lines under the deal are set to be released in 2007 and will be based on the network’s series Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.  Products based on the shows Ed, Edd n Eddy, Camp Lazlo and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy are also slated to available at retail next year.  The new deal does not affect existing deals for original series, which remain in tact.

Paula A. Kerger, President/CEO, Public Broadcasting Service, yesterday announced the creation of the new position of Chief Content Officer, and named John Boland to fill that position.  The Chief Content Officer’s position will include oversight of TV programming, new media, education and promotion.  The move is another strategic step in the rethinking of PBS and towards bringing the organization into the multi-platform/digital age.  In May Kerger moved to make PBS programs available via video-on-demand, a big move for the system and its 350 or so member stations.  Kerger became head of PBS in March amidst upheaval at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the ever-present discussions of cuts in funding from the federal government, funds that contribute not just to its programming but to the support of its member stations and ultimately to assist those stations in the switch over from analog to digital technology, as well as waning funding from major underwriters.  An internal PBS restructuring is planned for fall 2006.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

YTV and Studio B Productions have inked a deal to produce 10 new special episodes of the animated series Being Ian, with the first of these episodes slated to air September 2007.  Under the terms of the deal Corus Entertainment has rights to the Being Ian online assets and can also create interactive online games and activities, as well as stream clips and episodes. Additionally Corus’ plans for the series, targeted to K9-12, include offering content on mobile TV and VOD beginning fall 2006. A YTV original production, Being Ian is produced by Vancouver-based Studio B Productions and is distributed by Nelvana.  A one-hour movie special, Hurry for Hollywood, will air June 29 at 6 p.m. as part of YTV’s School’s Out event, which will include including extra online features.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Showcase Entertainment has inked several international program licensing deals for its kid series Flight 29 Down (26 x 30 min).  A week out from DISCOP, which will be held in Budapest June 22-24, Flight 29 Down has been picked up by DR-TV (Demark), NRK (Norway) and Viasat (The Baltics).  Co-produced by Showcase Entertainment and Discovery Kids, Flight 29 Down airs during the Discovery Kids on NBC Saturday morning programming block in the US.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Singing Machine Company and MGA Entertainment have inked a two-year licensing pact with for MGA’s Bratz franchise.  Under the deal The Singing Machine will produce and distribute a range of Bratz-based karaoke products, in North America, Europe and Australia.  Products will include a TFT DVD karaoke system, sing-a-long cassette players, deluxe microphones, electronic keyboards and an electronic drum.

Atari, Inc. is in development on the video game Totally Spies 2!: Undercover for Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance.  Based on the new episodes from the French animation studio Marathon, the Totally Spies 2!: Undercover game features 25 levels of game-play and features stories from give of the new episodes of the TV series.  The DS version of the game takes advantage of the system’s touch screen, microphone and multiplayer capabilities, including Totally Spies chat and five mini games that are played over wireless.  Totally Spies! airs in 100+ markets worldwide, including in the US on Cartoon Network.

Hollywood Records has signed Vanessa Anne Hudgens, aka Gabrielle in Disney Channel’s High School Musical, to an exclusive recording deal.  Hudgens’ debut CD, which is currently untitled, is scheduled for a September 26 release.

If you love playing Jenga, its owner, Pokonobe Associates and its licensing firm, Dimensional Branding Group has hired FOG Studios in a multi-year, multi-title deal to take the Jenga brand to various interactive gaming platforms such as mobile phones, handheld and console games.

Emdigo Inc., a provider of 3D content and production technology for wireless, has acquired the exclusive rights to develop and 3D graphics based animation that is based on Supergirl, China’s version of American Idol.  The US based Emdigo will design downloadable animated character versions of the Supergirl contestants, which will be updated on a regular based on what the participants do and wear during the course of the week-to-week competition.  The 2006 Supergirl contest began last week on China’s public TV, with a winner slated to be picked this September 2006.

Correction: The two-part semifinals for Nicktoons Network’s Thumber Slam will be air on July 24 and 31 and not as listed in yesterday’s edition.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jeffrey Edell has been appointed as President/COO, DIC Entertainment, reporting directly to Andy Heyward, Chairman/CEO.  He will manage DIC worldwide TV, home entertainment and consumer products units.  The creative division will continue to report to Heyward.  Edell takes over the reins from Brad Brooks who announced he will return to the world of investment banking and has accepted a position with Imperial Capital.  Brooks will serve as a consultant to DIC’s senior management in areas of finance and strategy assessment.  Most recently, Edell was President/CEO, MFC Development Corporation, a direct response marketing and branding company. Previously, he served as Chairman, Intermix Media, Inc., (MySpace), and President/CEO, Soundelux Entertainment Group.

John Boland has been named to the newly-created position of Chief Content Officer, Public Broadcasting Service.  Boland, who officially joins PBS this September, will oversee four departments programming, education, online services and promotion and brand management.  He will report to Kerger.  Boland is currently EVP/Chief Content Officer, KQED Public Broadcasting in San Francisco, where he oversees both its PBS and National Public Radio member stations.  It is worth noting here that PBS and NPR are separate entities, with Kerger heading up only the PBS TV segment.

Capcom has named Charles Bellfield as its VP/Marketing, US headquarters.  Bellfield will drive Capcom’s consumer marketing campaigns and oversee the strategic and operational marketing efforts including brand and product management, PR, customer service, e-commerce and its websites.  Most recently Bellfield served as Autodesk, Inc.’s global head of communications.  Previously he served as SVP, Edelman Public Relations, and as VP/Strategy and Corporate Affairs, Sega of America, Inc.
