Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With ratings tallied, the 2013 Stanley Cup Conference Finals can now claim to be the most-watched Conference Finals in 17 years, according to Nielsen, and are up a beefy 111% from last year for the NBC and NBC Sports Network combo, averaging 2.646 million viewers between the two channels. For the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs this year, the post-season now ranks as the second-most watched in 16 years.
Univision Deportes revealed plans for its exclusive live Spanish-language coverage the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Each match of the event will feature an hour of pre-game coverage on Futbol Central while UniMas will launch Republica de la Copa a special 90-minute newsmagazine airing each night of the tournament at 10p. Univision will carry a total of nine matches, including three group stage contests featuring Mexico/Italy on Sunday, June 16 at 2p, Brazil/Mexico on June 19 at 2p and Japan/Mexico on June 22 at 2p as well as the final rounds of the tournament. UniMas will broadcast five games including Italy/Brazil on June 22 at 2p. Univision Deportes Network offers up two matches and will also air live post-game programs after every match of the tournament. In addition, all 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup matches will be rebroadcasted on Univision Deportes Network.
A blow out in game two of the NBA Finals’ saw viewership take a dip, slipping 13% from a tight game two in 2012, according to Nielsen. Overall, the game was seen on Sunday by 14.6 million people, off-pace from last year’s 16.7 million.
The NFL may be getting exotic with the draft, with the league reportedly mulling a move from New York City and splitting the three days of the event into three different cities per year, according to SI.com. While the shift is still in the planning stages, the league would be looking to create a “fan-focused” road show.
Some of college football’s smaller conference are also getting exotic, exploring some new locales for bowl games after this season, according to ESPN.com. The report states that as many as nine locations are under consideration to begin bowl games in 2014, including: Miami, Orlando, Little Rock, Ark.; Boca Raton, Fla.; Montgomery, Ala.; and Los Angeles; as well as Ireland; Dubai and either Toronto or Nassau, Bahamas. Bowl games would serve the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt.
After losing Madison Square Garden, the new American Athletic Conference will hold its first men’s basketball tournament at the FedEx Forum in Memphis next March. The AP writes that the tournament will be held March 12-15 with all games televised by ESPN’s networks and the championship on ESPN.
Heading into the Stanley Cup Finals, local channels are adding programming to keep up the momentum. In Chicago, Comcast SportsNet will deliver Blackhawks Pre and Post Game Live coverage hosted by Pat Boyle & Steve Konroyd before & after every Stanley Cup Final Game. Blackhawks Morning Skate Live will run at 10:30a this morning and on Saturday.
In Boston, NESN is offering expanded pre and post-game coverage on NESN and NESNplus during the Stanley Cup Final. With the addition of NESN Sports Today Bruins Specials, NESN will air a 90-minute pre-game and 90-minute post-game before and after every Stanley Cup Final game.
ONE World Sports detailed programming plans for its carriage of seven home games of the New York Cosmos that marks the team’s return to the North American Soccer League. Programming begins Aug. 3 wit the Strikers/Cosmos. In addition, the channel will debut Cosmos Classics starting July 6 revisiting the days of the original Cosmos.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards will be a guest judge on Discovery Channel’s The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius on tonight at 7p. The episode will feature Edwards determining which one of four semifinalists can most successfully bring a speeding car to a safe stop.
