Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Where are your kids?  If they are 2-11 years old, more than likely they are online. US K2-11 are spending +63% more time online over the last five years, according to a new Nielsen report, from about 7 hours in May 2004 to 11+ hours online in may 2009.  In May 2009, K2-11 comprised 16 million, or 9.5% of the online universe (a fairly split evenly between boys and girls).  This is an increase over 2004, with the number of K2-11 online growing +18%.  K2-11 are also outpacing the increase for the overall population, which was up by +36% over the last five years.  Boys are spending 7% more time online than girls, but girls are taking in more content, viewing 9% more web pages than boys in May 2009.  Meanwhile, in May 2009, boys led in viewing and time spent, consuming 61% of video streams among kids and comprising 57% of the time spent viewing videos.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cookie Jar Entertainment is named as the exclusive North American licensing agent and program distributor for Mexican wrestling’s Lucha Libre USA and the Lucha Libre AAA league.  Cookie Jar plans to introduce a consumer products line (e.g. action figures, apparel, books, back-to-school and novelty/collectibles) initially targeting the Hispanic population and growing to include wrestling fans of all ages beginning in 2010.  Cookie Jar will also launch the first English-language Lucha Libre AAA TV series in the US as part of its new primetime label, The Jar, in January 2010.

Jimmy Two-Shoes (26×30) heads to Japan under a new deal inked by Breakthrough Entertainment with Disney Television International Japan.  Breakthrough Animation produces Jimmy Two-Shoes in association with Teletoon (Canada) and Jetix Europe.

4Kids Entertainment signs new broadcast rights deals for the animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D‘s in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.  The first season of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s is the ninth season of the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series franchise.  Season one of Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s will be air on CITV (UK), Network Ten (Australia), AB Group (France), Mediaset (Italy), RTL2 (Germany), VAS (Spanish Speaking Satellite /Latin America), TV2 (Denmark), Digiturk (Turkey), Children’s Channel (Israel) and MBC (Middle East).  In series airs in the US as part of TheCW4Kids Saturday morning block on The CW, and daily on Cartoon Network.  The series is also available via VOD on the Comcast, Cox and Bresnan cable systems.

The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) presents the US premiere of the new celebrated animated movie The Secret of Kells at the IFC Center on July 18 and 19.  From the producers of the movies Kirikou and the Sorceress and Triplets of Belleville, The Secret of Kells is an Irish, Belgian, French co-production and is Cartoon Saloon’s first feature film.  Empire Film Group is distributing the movie in the US.  More info is available at via the NYICFF’s website www.gkids.com .

Disney on Broadway has released a YouTube world premiere music video featuring Drew Seeley.  The video is a special pop version of Her Voice from Disney’s The Little Mermaid on Broadway, in which Seeley is currently starring as Prince Eric.

Ubisoft unveils plans to open a full development studio in Toronto, Ontario.  The government of Ontario is investing US$226.3 million over ten years in the company and Ubisoft’s net investment will be about half a billion US in the new studio, which will begin operations in late 2009.  Yannis Mallat, CEO, Ubisoft Montreal will lead the new Ubisoft Toronto, the fourth Ubisoft studio in Canada.  The Toronto studio will collaborate with local film industry veterans to enhance video game production and extend Ubisoft’s convergence strategy as part of Ubisoft’s worldwide plan of extending its brands to other platforms and mediums, including books, comics, short films and other products.

E1 Entertainment is appointed to represent licensing for the preschool series Hi-5 in the UK on behalf of Hi-5 Operations Pty.  E1 Entertainment is planning a full licensing campaign across multiple categories and is actively seeking licensing partners.  Originally launched in Australia, the new UK Hi-5 series debuted in November 2008 and airs in on Cartoonito and GMTV’s CiTV and CMTV2.  Additionally, the Hi-5 Surprise Party! UK live tour, presented by Andrew Kay and Associates in association with Stage Partners, begins kicks off in October 2009.

The kid’s science animated series, The Zula Patrol, and Ohio’s Center of Science and Industry (COSI) enter into a multi-year partnership to develop programs and resources for museums, schools, and other kid-and-family-centric destinations across the US.  The partnership will focus on several initiatives including: The creation of curricula for Zula-themed workshops, birthday parties and overnight events for museums, camps, school etc; Development and distribution of Zula Science Stations  portable interactive exhibits; and a marketing campaign to build awareness and subscriptions for ZulaWorld.com, the campaign will include a fundraising component for kid’s museums and science/technology centers in the US.

Ruth Katcher joins publisher Egmont USA as Editor-at-Large.  Katcher was most recently an Executive Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books.  A publisher of books for kids including picture books and young adult novels, Egmont USA is a subsidiary of Egmont UK and part of the Egmont Group.
