Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/29/09
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, July 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
To date, the Chinese government has prevented most foreign cable programming from reaching Chinese households. That said, the web is probably the best way to introduce professionally produced programming to the territory as China now boasts the world’s largest web audience with some 338 million users (some 60 million souls fewer than China’s TV audience.) Baidu, operator of China’s leading search engine, and Discovery Channel have launched a new website in China featuring branded science, technology, space, natural history, engineering, paleontology, archaeology, history and culture content – the first of its kind with a U.S. programmer. Baidu, which enjoys about a 60% market share of search in China, will have responsibility for the overall management of the site and Discovery will be the exclusive content provider with both companies sharing in ad revenue.
Sharks and Mythbusters are O.K. in China but not gangbangers or Mafioso types. China’s Ministry of Culture has issued a ban on online games featuring these themes, warning of “severe punishment” for violators. Linking to online games that glorify organized crime has also been prohibited, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Viacom announced during its earnings call that it has signed its first carriage deal for the new premium channel Epix, a joint venture with Lions Gate and MGM. Verizon’s FiOS TV platform will begin to carry Epix across multiple platforms including linear TV, VOD, broadband and mobile.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ bi-monthly Emmy® Magazine is launching an interactive digital edition, powered by interactive media vendor Zinio. The edition, which will be made available to paying print subscribers, will be a digital replica of the print version enhanced with interactive goodies including searchability, clickable links, zoom functionality, and the ability to email content to friends or post it on blogs or social networking sites.
UK-based ITN On has signed a global video production deal with digital fashion magazine Imagine Fashion to create a new fashion portal due out in Dec., to be edited by fashion editor Amber Gordon. Content partners include MSN, Bebo, Emirates, FHM, 4Music and Telegraph Media Group.
Live streaming site Justin.tv launched a free, open API over the weekend allowing developers to create applications that harness the site’s content streams within third party applications. The API has two main components: The REST API will provide info about existing Justin.tv data and broadcasts. The Flash API will include Justin.tv’s live player and broadcaster, along with social chat capabilities.
Google has struck a deal with New York-based software company Visible World to develop an addressable TV advertising system featuring automated contextual and targeting options, per the WSJ. Google will combine Visible World’s software with its Google TV Ads solution to allow advertisers narrow their buys and swap out creative on the fly.
YouTube announced a trial with video ad inventory solutions provider FreeWheel to allow select partners to sell their own ads within videos they post to the service, a privilege previously only enjoyed by larger content players. (YouTube put a stop to third party brand placement ads in May so this may help replace that revenue stream for independent producers.)
Sprint Nextel, the #3 mobile carrier in the U.S., announced it will buy Virgin Mobile USA in a deal placing Virgin’s value at $483 million, including the 13% share of the company that Sprint already owns. The acquisition will strengthen Sprint’s presence in the growing prepaid mobile market.
Time Warner bought back the 5% stake Google purchased in AOL back in 2005 for $283 million on July 8, according to regulatory filing issued on Monday. But the search giant took a bath on the investment as it paid $1 billion for the stake. The sale pegs AOL’s current market evaluation at $5.7 billion.
The recession continues to hit almost every segment of the media business as Viacom reported that Q2 net earnings fell 32% to $277 million while revenue fell by 14% to $3.3 billion. Revenues declined at divisions across the company including Viacom’s media networks (-8%), worldwide ad revenues (-8%) and filmed entertainment (-22%).
Following the acquisition of mobile device monetization specialist Kiptronic in May, content delivery network Limelight launched a pair of services designed to publish videos and serve ads to video-capable smartphones such as the iPhone and Palm Pre, per Mediapost. Rival CDN Akamai announced video support for the iPhone earlier this month.
Twitter is the best video viewing recommendation engine among a sample of leading social networking portals which also included Digg and Facebook, according to a new analysis from TubeMogul. Viewers watched almost 2 minutes of video linked within tweets, compared to watching 1:14 of video found on Facebook and 58 seconds of video discovered from Digg. One theory about Twitter’s success is that users tend to more highly customize their feeds, cutting down on noise and thus improving engagement.
Most job search sites have picked up an onslaught of new traffic during the past year as the category has increased its reach by 10% overall, according to a new ComScore report. CareerBuilder is still the leader in the space but it actually attracted slightly less traffic during the past year. Traffic to Yahoo’s HotJobs increased by 23% while many smaller sites saw their traffic nearly double.

In what is becoming an ongoing battle between Palm and Apple, Palm released the 1.1 version of the Pre smartphone operating system that restores access to the current version of iTunes. The release also includes a new app from Sprint that allows you to listen to NFL games live from the phone.
Mile high Wi-Fi internet provider Gogo introduced tiered pricing based on the length of the flight you’re on. Flights less than 1.5 hours now cost $5.95 while flights 1.5 – 3 hours cost $9.95. Gogo, which has contracted with AirTran, American, Delta, Virgin America and Air Canada, also introduced a monthly pass for frequent travelers, priced at $50/month for unlimited access.
Research In Motion unveiled a new set of tools for developers looking to build apps for the BlackBerry platform, including new plug-ins for Microsoft Visual Studio and Eclipse.
Discovery Channel has named Kevin Mohs as VP/Production and Wayne Sampson as Director of Development and Production, the former to be based in the network’s home base headquarters and the latter in Discovery’s Los Angeles production studios. Kevin, who reports to Gena McCarthy, SVP of Production and Development, is charged with managing content and production of all cross-platform programs for the network. Wayne reports to Elli Hakami, VP of Development West Coast.
Online video portal blip.tv called a press conference yesterday to announce a slew of new multiplatform infrastructure and distribution partnerships, extending its reach and functionality to include most of the known online video space. New deals with YouTube (which still delivers some 60% of all videos streamed in the U.S.), Vimeo, NBC Local Media New York and Tivo set-top maker Roku, when combined with existing agreements with iTunes, MSN, AOL, Tivo, etc., give indie web producers and advertisers who want to reach their audiences a platform that reaches some 80% of the online video universe. Blip also addressed a huge metrics need, striking a new partnership with web video analytics firm TubeMogul to provide producers with free detailed tracking and second-by-second viewing data across most online outlets. This is data that can be perpetually mined to figure out how to get viewers to stick with your show. Blip.tv co-founder and CEO Mike Hudack, who compares the platform’s approach to Japan’s Kaizen method of continual improvement, says the company has been cobbling together the distribution partners for months, but it held off going public with the news until blip’s development team finished rebuilding the system’s “dashboard” interface to make uploading to YouTube or Tivo as simple as checking a box. (Simplicity is good.) Blip has also upgraded its targeted ad system, deploying technology from new YouTube partner FreeWheel. The platform now serves ads blip sells for producers across its entire network including YouTube, the latter as part of a negotiated revenue split that works out to a 50% share for producers after certain upfront commitments are met. (Cash flow is better.) “Any advertising served by YouTube that was there before our deal will work same for producers,” said Mr. Hudack. “Any ads inserted and served by blip are under a different structure but they should make more money for our partners than existing deals.”
