News arrived late this evening Steve McPherson, President of ABC Entertainment Group has tendered his resignation and it has been accepted. IN a statement released by Disney/ABC Television Group, Mr. McPherson said: ‘I want to thank the wonderful team of individuals who have worked with me throughout my time here and wish them nothing but the best.” No replacement has been named as yet, but an announcement is expected shortly.
Film expert Leonard Maltin stars in a new weekly program on REELZCHANNEL titled Maltin on Movies opening August 6 at 6p. The show highlights Maltin’s movie reviews opening in theaters and at home via On Demand, Pay-Per-View, premium channels, DVD and Blu-ray. The premiere episode has Maltin reviewing new releases such as Disney’s Step Up 3D and the DVD release of Clash of the Titans.
Bravo is premiering a new docu-series, Thintervention with Jackie Warner beginning September 6 at 10p. Warner, who previously starred on the Bravo series Work Out, will inspire drastic lifestyle changes for her overweight clients, doing whatever it takes to keep them on target with their weight loss goals. Shed Media US is producing the series.
ESPN 3D is set to telecast the X Games 16 to Australia, marking the first time the network will telecast outside the US. ESPN 3D, teaming with FOXTEL and AUSTAR in Australia will offer eight hours of coverage of X Games 16 from Los Angeles beginning this Friday at 10a to 1p and following on Sunday from 9a to 2p via FOXTEL and AUSTAR. American fans of X Games can view the coverage this Thursday from 8p to 11p and also on Saturday from 7p to midnight.
This Friday at 10p, HISTORY debuts a fifth season of The Universe by giving viewers a chance to see this premiere episode, “7 Wonders of the Solar System” in 3D when the network offers its first 3D broadcast via DIRECTV’s new channel, n3D powered by Panasonic. Also on Friday, DIRECTV will provide a 2D version of The Universe’s opening episode on The 101 Network, also at 10p.

Trifecta Entertainment & Media is distributing a weekly two-hour movie block this fall in national syndication tentatively titled Elvira’s Movie Macabre. The movie block is hosted once again by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark who became famous in the 1980s. Elvira returns as host and commentator for 26 horror movies beginning the weekend of September 25. To date, Elvira’s Movie Macabre will air on local television stations representing more than 80% of US households. Check local listings for station/day/time. The movie block is produced by 34D Production and is written and produced by Cassandra Peterson (who plays Elvira) and Ted Biaselli.
Producer Nigel Lythgoe is close to making a deal to become executive producer for FOX’s American Idol. Lythgoe supervised production on the competition series during the first seven seasons and is being asked back to rejuvenate the series following the exit of judge Simon Cowell. A replacement for Cowell has not been announced, though it is being reported Justin Timberlake is now on the list to be considered as well as Elton John joining previously announced Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr.
Rap artist, Common landed a lead role in AMC’s new pilot, Hell on Wheels. The contemporary western is about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and the musician-turned-actor Common will play the character Elam, a freed slave who travels West looking for work on the railroad as well as his place in the world. This is Common’s first leading role on television. He recently starred in the movie Just Wright opposite Queen Latifah, made an appearance in the comedy film Date Night and has won two Grammys. Hell on Wheels was developed by Endemol USA with production by E1 Television. Production will begin next month in Alberta, Canada.
FOX’s Glee is replacing its football coach Ken Tanaka played by Patrick Gallagher, cites TV Guide. For the new season debuting in September, there will be a new football coach, Shannon Beiste, played by actress Dot Jones.
In more Glee news, FOX tapped Cheyenne Jackson (30 Rock) in a recurring role playing the coach of Vocal Adrenaline, per EW. Jackson appeared in Broadway’s Xanadu and as a guest star on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
A staple talent on CBS, actress Leah Remini (King of Queens) signed a talent holding and development deal with the network and CBS Television Studios to star in a new scripted comedy series. It was also announced last week that Remini was selected to be one of the panelists for CBS’ new untitled daytime talk show. Recently, Remini starred in the ABC pilot It Takes a Village which did not make it to series.
NBC officially announced on Monday Steve Carell, star of The Office is indeed departing the series after this upcoming season. After seven years of playing the boss at Dunder Mifflin, Carell’s run will come to an end when the actor’s contract expires in 2011. NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said The Office will continue and also will remain in its 9p Thursday time slot. Increasingly, Carell is appearing in movies as he is the lead character voice in the animated comedy Despicable Me currently out in theaters and stars opposite Paul Rudd in Dinner for Schmucks released this week. Bromstad said the “door is open if he (Carell) wants to make return visits to the show.” Furthermore, Carell’s company, Carousel Productions has a television production agreement with Universal Media Studios.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX held onto first place Saturday night at 1.0/4 among A18-49 viewers, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s back-to-back Cops episodes averaged a winning 0.8/3 at 8p followed by a tie between ABC’s Movie of the Week and UNVI’s Sabado Gigante with both posting a 0.7/3. FOX claimed a second win of the night during 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.4/5 and trailing in second place was a three-way tie between ABC’s movie, CBS’ Crimetime Saturday repeat and UNIV’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3 each. At 10p, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery encore won with a 1.2/4 with a third tie occurring this time between NBC’s Law & Order: CI and UNIV’s Sabado Gigante at 1.0/4 apiece.

Former NBC Universal producer, Brian Thomas was hired by REELZCHANNEL as Producer/Original Programming. Brian will be involved with such original shows as Movies & Music and Naked Trailers.
Discovery Communications named Bruce Campbell as Chief Development Officer/General Counsel and has also added Lee Bartlett as EVP/Global Production Management, Business and Legal Affairs. In his new role, Bruce takes on the position of General Counsel from Joe LaSala who is departing from the company at the end of this year. Bruce will continue to manage worldwide business development for Discovery, while reporting to David Zaslav, President/CEO. Bruce will be dually based at Discovery’s offices in Silver Spring, MD and New York City. Lee, who previously worked for ITV and FOX, begins his new position September 1, reporting to Peter Liguori, COO. Lee will be based in Los Angeles though will have offices in both Silver Spring and London.
Patalia Tate joins Travel Channel as SVP/Marketing, Creative and Brand Strategy, coming from Food Network where she served as VP/Brand Creative. Patalia will provide oversight for Travel Channel’s on-air and off-air creative involving series and brand campaigns, print design, packaging for brand extension as well as the network’s overall creative brand strategy. She will additionally supervise a team of strategy, design, creative, production and planning managers as well as writers/producers, on-air graphic designers, print designers, production coordinators and assistants.
WNET.ORG elevated Roberta Lee to Director/Publicity, effective immediately. Roberta will supervise all programming and talent publicity and will further be involved across all company-wide production units to promote various projects on-air and via online platforms. Roberta reports to Kellie Specter, Senior Director/Corporate Communications, WNET.ORG.
Nancy Tellet was upped to SVP/Research and Consumer Insights for MTV Networks Latin America, Canada and the US Hispanic, announced MTV Networks International. In her new role, Nancy oversees all research and planning initiatives for the company’s brands including MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon and Tr3s. Nancy will also manage all functions relating to research such as market analysis, ratings data and brand and viewer insight for the consumer as well as the trade markets. Based in New York, Nancy will report jointly to Jose Tillan, GM/EVP, Tr3s and to Scott McBride, COO/EVP, MTV Networks Latin America, Canada and US Hispanic.
