Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 28, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
20th Television has officially cancelled On Air with Ryan Seacrest, which follows yesterday’s news that the show had been pulled from more than 20 Sinclair station lineups. The show will continue through and until 9/17. Meanwhile, Seacrest himself remains busy with the next edition of American Idol, his daily morning radio show on KIIS.FM and his weekly American Top 40 radio countdown show.
Two new shows have been ordered up, well nearly. One is a format acquisition by ABC of Ricochet Prods program Supernanny; the other, currently still in negotiations, is from Granada called Nanny 911, and Fox is kicking those tires. In the former, which ABC has ordered 8 eps, Supernanny Jo Frost (a professional nanny who also appears in the UK version) moves in with a family and then tells the parents how to deal with their ill-behaved children. Supernanny aired on Channel 4 in the UK and just finished its opening season, and the final ep drew 6.5 million viewers according to Variety. Nanny 911 uses the committee version of fixing parental problems with a group of nannies, one taking the lead in helping a family correct discipline issues with the kids.
Tonight’s Premiere: Amish in the City, 8pm on UPN
Monday night’s opening of the 2004 Democratic Convention was not exactly a blockbuster in the ratings department for broadcast television. Among A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, CBS drew a 1.9/5, NBC a 1.5/4 and ABC a 1.3/4. Among the older set, the numbers understandably improve: A25-54 — CBS 2.2/6, NBC 1.8/5 and ABC 1.5/4; and among the 50+ crowd CBS 4.2/9, NBC 2.8/6, and ABC 2.5/5. For the cable networks, CNN led the pack in largest number of viewers with 2.54 million from 10-11pm, Fox News 1.44 million and MSNBC 1.04 million.
The Twilight Zone, distributed by New Line Television, has cleared more than 96% of the country for the upcoming season. The show kicks off the week of 9/6, and for many that will mean a Labor Day Marathon (the best thing about Labor Day!), which will include two remakes of classic eps Monsters on Maple Street and It’s Still a Good Life as well as two new eps. Clearances include all of the top 50 markets including WPIX/NY; KCAL & KCBS/LA; WGN and XWGN/Chicago; WPHL/Phila; WLVI/Boston; WBNX/Cleveland; WKRN/Nashville and WNDY/Indianapolis.
Fox has ordered up three additional episodes of its summer sitcom Method & Red. Also, the show is about to go on a planned hiatus – so it won’t be airing opposite the Summer Olympics (NBC), and the plan is for it to return in November paired up with Bernie Mac Show.
TNT has ordered pilots on two new drama series: The Closer (by The Shephard/Robin Company, Warner Bros. Television) and The Line (by DreamWorks TV, Sony Pictures Television). The Closer is set in a special unit at the LAPD which handles high profile murder cases, and is centered around one women who is known as the world’s best interrogator, though she also tends to raise the ire in those around her. The Line is set in Miami and the central character, a federal prosecutor, does things his way, regardless of the rules. Both shows are looking at a potential 2005 launch.
Casting Notes:
Tim Reid will join the cast of That 70’s Show (Fox) as a record producer and father of Steven Hyde.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier has been cast in UPN‘s new drama series Veronica Mars as a journalism teacher and Veronica’s mentor.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of July 5-18, 2004. The list is ranked by viewer’s ability to recall the new ads and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average.
