SCIENCE: Wonders of the Universe at 9p
Next Tuesday, Univision premieres La Fuerza del Destino a new drama about Ivan Villagomez, an honest man who is framed for murder and escapes to make a new life in the US. After eleven years, Ivan returns to his hometown to discover the truth of his past. La Fuerza del Destino opens at 9p and features such stars as David Zepeda as Ivan, Sandra Echevarria, Laisha Wilkins and Gabriel Soto.
In further news from Univision Communications, the company reports it finalized its upfront advertising sales totaling $1.7 billion to $1.8 billion. The company’s networks include Univision and TeleFutura broadcast networks and cable channel Galavision.
Starting in August, Discovery Channel launches a new series event inspired by the network’s founder John Hendricks. Curiosity debuts August 7 at 8p and delves into a myriad of questions from famous personalities such as horror master Eli Roth, Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mythbusters’ Adam Savage as well as leading scientist Professor Stephen Hawking among others. Curiosity spans five years with 60 total episodes with additional companion content on Science Channel, HD Theater, Planet Green and Discovery’s International networks. During the premiere episode, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking explores the question: Did God create the universe? Following the premiere of Curiosity, Discovery Channel will air a special roundtable discussion at 9p featuring expert theologians debating Hawkings findings and theories. The opening episode of Curiosity is produced for Discovery Channel by Darlow Smithson with John Smithson and Ben Bowie as executive producers; Susan Winslow is executive producer for Discovery Channel. For the series Curiosity, Simon Andreae is the senior executive producer and Alan Eyres is executive producer.
Soon after its June 1 series premiere, TNT granted Franklin & Bash a second season renewal. The legal drama starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer will have 10 episodes for its second season. Franklin & Bash is produced by Four Sycamore Productions, Left Coast Productions and FanFare Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
A trio of new original series debuts yet this year on truTV:
- Bear Swamp Recovery follows PJ Vinch, owner of a successful New Jersey repo company along with his father and teen son. Series is from Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment and premieres August 22 with back-to-back episodes at 10p and 1030p.
- Hulk Hogan’s MCW features former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan as he offers his expertise to the new Micro Championship Wrestling. Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment is behind this new series premiering September 14 at 10p.
- Impractical Jokers centers on long-time friends Sal, Murr, Q and Joe as they dare each other to perform crazy and humiliating public pranks. Series is from NorthSouth Productions and will launch in December.
- truTV also acquired the exclusive, off-network cable rights to reality series Wipeout debuting on the network September 2 and airing on Fridays at 8p.
- Several other returning series have set their premiere dates: Lizard Lick Towing is back with more of season one beginning August 22 at 930p with season two opening in November; Las Vegas Jailhouse premieres season four September 4 at 10p; Operation Repo launches season nine September 14 at 930p; and in November four other series return including Police POV with a sophomore season; a fifth season of Hardcore Pawn; Black Gold rejoins the lineup with a fourth season; and Full Throttle Saloon rolls out a third season.
TLC’s long-running series What Not to Wear is back for a ninth season beginning August 16 at 9p. The new season has 26 one-hour episodes and it kicks off featuring a fashion makeover of Dancing with the Stars’ Cheryl Burke’s and Jenny McCarthy’s personal assistant, Becky. What Not to Wear is produced by BBC Productions for TLC.
As previously announced, the second season of The Walking Dead debuts in the US on AMC October 16 with 13 all-new episodes. Directly after starting October 17, Fox International Channels (FIC) will begin the season two worldwide launch, reaching FOX audiences in 122 countries and more than 200 million viewers. All FIC markets will premiere the first episode of The Walking Dead during the week of October 17th and before the second episode airs in the US.
Independent producer and distributor of first-run syndicated content, Entertainment Studios, Inc. said its new court series We the People with Gloria Allred has now cleared in 85% of the US. The court series shot exclusively in hi-def was picked up by stations owned by NBC, Sinclair, Gannett, Media General, Newport, Nexstar, Journal, Lin, Capitol, Meredith, Belo, Pappas, Four Points, Max, Smith, Gormally, Block, Local TV, Schurz, Northwest, Roberts, New Age, Fireweed, Transamerica, Bonton, and Communication Corporation of America. The series is produced and distributed by Entertainment Studios.
FX continues its film buying spree by picking up the commercial premiere rights to Captain America: The First Avenger along with the comedies Friends With Benefits and Horrible Bosses.
Travel Channel embarks on a new original travel series, The Layover hosted by Anthony Bourdain, current host of the network’s series Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations now in its seventh season. Production is moving forward on The Layover from Zero Point Zero with ten one-hour episodes. The Layover, set to premiere in fourth quarter 2011, follows Bourdain as he arrives in a new city each week with only 24-48 hours to show viewers the insider places, people and foods. For the new series, Bourdain will journey across the US, Asia and Europe. Chris Collins, Lydia Tenaglia and Anthony Bourdain will serve as executive producers for Zero Point Zero; Stone Roberts is executive producer for the network.
Former star of Roseanne, John Goodman will next appear in six episodes of NBC’s sitcom Community. Goodman will play Vice Dean Laybourne, the confident administrator who heads the school of Air Conditioning Repair at Greendale Community College. Goodman’s role begins with the third season premiere episode premiering September 22.
FOX’s House added Odette Annable (Breaking In) as a series regular for the show’s eighth season. Annable will play a prison doctor who meets House while he’s serving time in prison. House invites her character to join his team at Princeton-Plainsboro.
A recasting occurred on The CW’s upcoming new series Ringer as Zoey Deutch joins the cast replacing Caitlin Custer as the rebellious stepdaughter of twin sister, Siobhan (Sarah Michelle Gellar), cites TV Guide.
New fall Style Network series Clean House New York welcomes two New York designers and former contestants from season five of HGTV’s Design Star as hosts, Nina Ferrer and Michael Moeller. The show’s team also includes appraiser Elyse Luray and auctioneer Duncan Schieb. Clean House New York is presently in production on ten one-hour episodes and is slated to debut in October on Style. True Entertainment is producing.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: With a little magic deployed, ABC won Saturday night with a 1.0/4 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s double repeat Cops episodes averaged a winning 1.0/5 and the encore presentation of ABC’s Harry Potter movie next at 0.8/3. ABC’s movie topped during 9p with a 1.2/4 while CBS’ Crimetime Saturday and the average of FOX’s rerun comedies Family Guy and The Cleveland Show shared the #2 spot at 0.8/3 each. The third hour of ABC’s Harry Potter movie remained steady in first place through 10p at 1.2/4 followed by NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat at 1.0/4.

Starting out at 7p, ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos repeat and CBS’ 60 Minutes repeat tied for #1 at 1.1/4 apiece and NBC’s Dateline encore was #2 at 1.0/3. CBS’ Big Brother surpassed the pack during 8p with a 2.5/8 and the average of FOX’s The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show reruns was next at 1.7/6. At 9p, Univision’s Pequenos Gigante did best at 2.3/6 and the average of FOX’s Family Guy and American Dad was second at 1.7/6 followed by the premiere of CBS’ new reality show Same Name in third at 1.5/4. Jesus Perezagua elevated to President of Fox International Channels (FIC) Europe and Africa. In his new role, Jesus will oversee an additional 15 TV channels and online properties in the UK and Africa and he will also be charged with expanding FIC’s businesses in the region. Based in Amsterdam, Jesus reports to Hernan Lopez, CEO of Fox International Channels and National Geographic Channels International.
Intersport hired executive producer Dan Bowen as VP/Production and Development and Executive Producer, effective immediately. Dan will manage the development and production of ongoing and original programming projects.
Galen Jones appointed by Oxygen Media to the newly-minted and expanded position as SVP/Oxygen Research. Galen will work in tandem with Oxygen President Jason Klarman by overseeing all facets of research and strategic insights for the network encompassing programming, scheduling, marketing, digital and new media, business development and sales. Based in New York, Galen reports to Tony Cardinale, EVP/Brand Planning and Strategic Insights for NBCU Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media.
Effective immediately, Jeffrey Funk joins Tribune’s WGNO/NOLA 38 in New Orleans as Creative Services Director.
RHI Entertainment’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Gabriel de Alba revealed immediate appointments for a new interim management team. The Office of the CEO will be helmed by Mike Corrigan, David Salzman and Stewart Till who all have been former members of the Board of Directors. The trio of executives will develop a long-range set of business goals and creative strategies involving development and implementation. Mike is the former CFO of MGM; David is the co-founder of Lorimar Telepictures and past CEO of four other entertainment and media companies; and Stewart is currently the non-executive Chair at Icon UK and Chair of Skillset.
Relocating to Atlanta from Knoxville, former HGTV executive Michael Dingley becomes SVP/Content and Development with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC). In his new role, Michael heads all original content development, production, scheduling and acquisitions. He reports to Bob Walker, EVP/GM of Networks and Content.
NBCUniversal named Tahira Bhatti-McClure to the role of VP/Diversity and Cable Operations, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios. Tahira will have oversight on developing diversity initiatives related to the unit’s programming and sourcing as well as working with Human Resources on workplace diversity issues. Tahira will also retain her previous operational responsibilities involving USA Network and Syfy including but not limited to matters related to real estate and facilities. In her new role, she reports to Bonnie Hammer, Chairman.
